Christmas potato update. Welcome to
0:04
Gardening with Ben. In this video, I'm
0:05
going to give you an update on how well
0:07
our Christmas potatoes are doing. You
0:10
may remember I planted mine beginning of
0:13
August. They'll take about 16 weeks to
0:15
grow, so they should be ready around
0:17
December time when the plants start
0:19
dying off. That's when you know that
0:21
they're ready to harvest. But yeah,
0:23
we've started growing all our Christmas
0:25
potatoes. So, we're going to show you
0:27
what they look like now as they are
0:29
doing absolutely fantastic. I'm growing
0:32
mine in my poly tunnel. You can grow
0:33
them outside and then move them indoors
0:36
when it gets to around October time when
0:38
the cold weather comes because potatoes
0:40
don't like frost. It will kill the
0:42
plants and burn the plants off. So,
0:44
don't leave them outside during the
0:46
colder months. It is starting to get a
0:47
bit cooler at night now. I've noticed
0:49
that the temperatures are dropping at
0:51
night. So, do be careful and do have
0:55
them somewhere safe. That's why I start
0:57
mine off in my poly tunnel because
0:58
they're too heavy to shift once they get
1:01
growing and with all the composting.
1:03
Obviously, growing them indoors, it does
1:05
cost a lot of money buying the compost,
1:08
but it hopefully, fingers crossed, it's
1:10
worth it and you get a great harvest
1:11
from it. So, let's have the talking and
1:13
let's have a look at our Christmas
1:15
potatoes, everyone.
1:17
So, as you can see, they are doing
1:19
absolutely fantastic. Look at these.
1:23
Now, these are planted in big boxes.
1:25
We've got a drip irrigation system set
1:27
up to it. So, it waters them for around
1:30
while drip waters them for about 15
1:33
minutes twice a day we've got it set on.
1:35
So, they're keeping nice and moist and
1:38
keeping damp. So, that will help the
1:40
potatoes grow in the ground in the soil.
1:43
We've got some plant food in there as
1:45
well. We've also got some plant food on
1:47
top. But a lot of it is starting to
1:49
dissolve now. So, I might top up the
1:51
plant food this weekend and get it all
1:54
fed and hopefully growing stronger
1:56
because we want some really nice
1:58
potatoes in these. Like I said, it costs
2:00
a lot of money for the compost. So, I
2:01
want it to be worth it. So, we have got
2:04
three varieties of Christmas potato.
2:07
We've got the Maris Piper, we've got the
2:09
Pental Javelin, and we've got the Aaron
2:12
potato. So, look at the Aaron one. doing
2:14
fantastic. These ones, pentulant
2:16
javelin, these are doing fant. They're
2:18
all doing absolutely great. We've got
2:20
absolutely loads of growth on them.
2:22
Absolutely amazing. So, we're keeping
2:24
these well watered and keeping these
2:27
growing and hopefully we're going to get
2:29
some massive harvests from these. You've
2:32
not planted any Christmas potatoes yet.
2:34
You obviously can still plant potatoes
2:36
anytime through the winter period as
2:38
long as it's indoors, like I say, but
2:40
they usually take about 16 to 20 weeks
2:43
to grow. So obviously the faster you get
2:45
them growing, the more you'll earlier
2:48
you'll get them harvested. And while
2:50
it's still nice and warm weather, it
2:52
will encourage them to grow pretty well.
2:54
So have a go at growing Christmas
2:56
potatoes. It's something to grow
2:58
throughout the winter period if you
2:59
don't grow much like myself through the
3:01
winter. And as you know, fresh potatoes
3:04
taste completely different to the
3:05
supermarket potatoes. They're absolutely
3:08
gorgeous. They just melt in your mouth.
3:10
And I love having mine as new potatoes,
3:13
as chips. Absolutely gorgeous. So, give
3:17
it a try. Drop a comment below if you're
3:19
growing Christmas potatoes yourself.
3:21
Until next time, everyone. Remember,
3:24
keep smiling, keep shining, and keep
3:26
gardening. Rebell one.
