This video explains how to plant onions correctly and the simple steps that help them establish and grow well. I cover soil preparation, spacing, planting depth, and early care that supports healthy root development. It is helpful for gardeners wanting reliable crops and a clearer understanding of successful onion growing methods.

Let's plant our autumn onions. Welcome
0:02
to Gardening with Ben. We are now in
0:05
October, so we're now time to start
0:08
planting our autumn onions. This can be
0:11
done now. And obviously, you can usually
0:13
start some off in March, April time if
0:17
you're wanting to start some off then as
0:19
well to get even more crops. But these
0:21
ones we start off in autumn. These ones
0:23
are especially for growing in autumn.
0:26
So, we have three varieties that we're
0:29
going to be growing down here at the a
0:30
lotment. We've got some yellow ones,
0:34
we got some white ones,
0:36
and we've got some red ones as well.
0:39
I've never had much luck with growing
0:40
red onions, but we're going to give it a
0:43
try. As always, if things fail, I just
0:46
try and try again. It's the best way to
0:48
do about gardening. So, we're going to
0:50
be planting three these three varieties.
0:53
And there's probably about 50 in each
0:55
one by the looks of it. So hopefully
0:58
we'll get plenty of onions growing for
1:00
next year. So the ideal tool for
1:04
planting onions is a dber. So we've got
1:07
our dber ready. We've got beds dug over
1:10
and we can get these planted. Obviously
1:13
use a cane as well to get them in a
1:15
straight line. Even though I'm never
1:17
that straight when planting, but it's
1:19
ideal. And also remember to leave plenty
1:22
of spacing in between onions. Onions
1:25
like to get all the nutrients for
1:28
themselves. They don't like to compete
1:30
with weeds. So having plenty of space in
1:32
between makes them easier to weed around
1:35
and keep those weeds down in the beds as
1:39
they don't want to be competing with
1:40
them. And obviously they've got shallow
1:42
roots as well. So it's good uh if it
1:45
looks dry on top, keep them watered to
1:48
keep them growing. They don't obviously
1:50
go far down the roots on onions. So
1:53
yeah, let's get these outside. Let's get
1:56
these planted and let's get these grow.
1:58
So this is the bed that we're going to
2:00
plant them in. As you can see, it's all
2:02
been dug over
2:04
and it's all weed free now. So yeah,
2:07
we've got his deta, we've got his cane,
2:09
we've got his onions. So yeah, let's
2:12
start getting them in.
2:14
So we've got all the white onions
2:16
planted. plenty of space in between
2:18
them. So, what we need to do next is we
2:21
need to leave a gap so that we can get
2:23
down the middle. And then we're going to
2:24
plant as yellow ones as well and get
2:27
those in next.
2:30
So, we need to leave like a path down
2:31
there so that we can get in between and
2:33
get them weeded easily cuz they're quite
2:35
big beds. So, I don't want to be
2:37
stretching over the top to weed it. We
2:39
need to be able to get down the middle
2:40
to be able to weed in between the bulbs.
2:45
So, we've now got the yellow onions
2:47
planted and we've got a bit of a space
2:49
there to plant our red onions. So,
2:52
hopefully we can get all those in in
2:54
that area cuz I'd like all my onions in
2:56
the same patch if possible. Obviously,
2:59
like I said, I've left the space down
3:01
the middle so that I can get in between
3:04
and hopefully keep them weed free, but
3:07
knowing my look, they will get full of
3:09
weeds. But, we'll see. We will try and
3:10
get it all sorted this year and keep on
3:13
top of everything down at the plot.
3:16
So, we've now got all these planted.
3:18
We've got his white onions. We've got
3:20
his yellow onions. We've got us red
3:21
onions. All perfectly sorted. Now, we're
3:24
going to start feeding these in 3 weeks.
3:28
We have bought some special onion and
3:31
garlic feed which is nitrogen which is
3:34
good for creating the leaves on the
3:37
onions as obviously they create the
3:39
leaves first and then they start to
3:41
swell up towards springtime. So we're
3:44
going to be feeding them nitrogen all
3:46
the way up to spring every couple of
3:48
weeks and then we will feed them tomato
3:51
feed from then on to help with the
3:54
swelling. But apparently you don't feed
3:57
them nitrogen until about three weeks
4:00
after they've been planted as that can
4:02
cause burning of the roots. Now I've
4:05
never had massive onions when I've grown
4:07
them. So I've been reading up on it to
4:09
try and get them big. So this is what he
4:11
suggests using nitrogen. So let me show
4:13
you what I've got.
4:16
So this is the feed that I've got for my
4:19
onions. I'll pop a link for it in the
4:22
description or in the comments for you
4:24
to be able to purchase if you want it.
4:26
But yeah, this is for onions, garlic,
4:28
leaks, and other vegetables as well. So,
4:31
we're going to be feeding them after
4:33
about 3 weeks. So, today we're going to
4:36
net them over first because you need to
4:38
net the onions over or the birds will
4:41
pull them out and the shoot start
4:43
popping through. So, let's get us netted
4:45
on and get that secured.
4:52
So, we've got them covered over with
4:54
netting, a nice fine mesh netting.
4:58
We'll leave this on until the shoots
5:00
have started growing, probably for a
5:02
couple of months, and then we'll take it
5:04
off because then they'll be fine. Once
5:06
they get growing, they're usually okay.
5:07
It's just at the beginning when the
5:09
shoots start popping through. The birds
5:11
are very inquisitive and they like to
5:12
pull pull the bulbs out and then you end
5:14
up shoving them back in all the time. So
5:16
yeah, we're going to keep them covered
5:18
for the time being until they get
5:20
established. And obviously, like I said,
5:22
in about 3 weeks time, we'll be feeding
5:25
them with the nitrogen as well. So
5:28
hopefully we'll take it all back off the
5:30
netting, give them a good feed, and then
5:32
we'll be feeding them every two to three
5:34
weeks as well, all the way up to
5:37
springtime. So hopefully we're going to
5:39
get some big
5:41
onions this year.
5:44
So, thanks for watching today's video on
5:46
how to plant your autumn onion bulbs.
5:49
Make sure you drop us a follow to stay
5:50
up to date with how well they're getting
5:52
on throughout the year and through to
5:54
the harvest time. Until next time
5:56
everyone, remember keep smiling, keep
5:58
shining, and keep
