This video explains how to grow cucumbers from seed to harvest, including sowing seeds, transplanting seedlings and caring for plants as they grow. Learn the conditions cucumbers need to develop healthy vines and fruit.
The guide covers watering, feeding, supporting plants and preventing common problems such as poor pollination or misshapen fruit. It also explains when cucumbers are ready to pick and how to harvest correctly.

1:36
any ideas of videos that you want on
1:38
there just drop me a message on
1:39
Instagram I'm always up for new ideas
1:42
and yeah I love sharing tips and advice
1:44
from down there we'll also be doing
1:47
another tour video coming up this week
1:50
down at the allotment I'm going to be
1:51
doing them on a weekly basis as
1:53
obviously things are growing now on
1:55
theot well trying to with this weather
1:58
but hopefully we'll get lot more growing
2:01
down there and we've got quite a lot
2:03
more to be getting planted and that
2:05
leads on to one of our subjects of today
2:09
we're going to be talking about growing
2:11
cucumbers yes
2:13
cucumbers now cucumbers are expensive
2:17
obviously to buy in the shops and I've
2:20
always done well with growing cucumbers
2:22
down at my allotment and the variety
2:25
that I usually grow is the market more
2:28
variety of cucumber and as it seems one
2:30
of the easier ones to grow uh regarding
2:34
pollination getting them started and
2:37
training them and growing lots and lots
2:40
of fruit on them so I've been growing
2:44
Market more variety for about 16 years
2:46
now and I've never had any issues
2:50
growing them sometimes they obviously
2:52
get nibbled when they get started on but
2:54
after that usually they get growing
2:56
pretty well and I tend to grow these in
2:59
my polyon
3:01
and yeah it's can get kind of hot in
3:04
there and humid but I do have a good
3:07
success rate with them all and all I do
3:10
with my cucumbers is I just grow them in
3:12
a bucket with some holes in the bottom
3:15
and I just purchased some regular
3:17
compost from the supermarket or from the
3:19
garden center DIY shop and I fill it
3:23
about 3 F full of compost and I plant
3:27
one in each bucket now these buckets I
3:30
usually get from somewhere like
3:31
Morrison's the flower buckets and they
3:34
usually do the job pretty well and we've
3:37
had these flower buckets for years now
3:39
all we do is wash them out each year and
3:41
reuse them and make the use of them down
3:44
in the allotment so we've got about five
3:48
cucumber plants growing down at the
3:49
allotment at the moment and these ones
3:52
are all potted up in the buckets already
3:55
for growing this year and we've also
3:57
planted about two to three weeks ago 50
4:00
more seeds from a packet and they've all
4:03
germinated so we need to start getting
4:05
those planted up into the buckets as
4:06
well soon that might be a job for this
4:09
week but we'll see we'll see how well
4:10
they're looking when I'm next down at
4:12
the allotment but yeah I want to get as
4:15
many cucumber plants growing as possible
4:17
this year as they always go down well
4:19
with myself they always keep well and I
4:22
love sharing them out with friends and
4:24
family as well
4:26
and I usually have a good reception from
4:29
people when they've tasted them tasted
4:31
how delicious and how sweet they are so
4:33
cucumbers are pretty easy to look after
4:37
um obviously like I say I grow mine in a
4:39
poly tunnel so I'll Water Mine every
4:42
couple of days as the big drinkers
4:44
obviously cucumbers are made up of a lot
4:47
of water mainly water so they do require
4:51
quite a bit of drinking
4:53
water and keeping them hydrated and
4:57
obviously I like water them in the
4:59
morning sometimes spray them just to
5:01
keep them nice and moist uh with
5:04
water and I usually do pretty well with
5:07
them so once you start growing and get
5:10
to a certain height what you need to do
5:12
is you need to make sure that you get
5:15
them growing up something you don't want
5:19
cucumbers growing along the floor as
5:21
things can eat them they can get rotten
5:24
they
5:25
can get eaten by rats mice slugs
5:30
anything will have a nibble on it so you
5:32
need to make sure you're growing them up
5:33
off the ground now what I usually do is
5:36
I usually grow them up some netting and
5:38
cucumbers are very strong plants what
5:42
they do is they send out
5:44
little I forgot what the word is now
5:48
like little shoots where they will grab
5:51
onto something tendrils bit like I think
5:54
they're called uh they latch onto things
5:57
and wrap the cells around them so if you
5:59
got netting up they'll throw out these
6:01
tendrils and they'll wrap the themselves
6:03
Around The netting and they'll hold the
6:04
themselves tight they won't need
6:08
fastening up you'll need to get them
6:10
started by tying them onto the netting
6:12
but once they're growing up the
6:14
netting they'll grow pretty easy and
6:18
they'll do pretty well and it's funny
6:22
with growing cucumbers what I always
6:23
have the issue of doing is that I'm
6:25
growing them all and then like you
6:27
suddenly think you a't got any cucumber
6:29
and you look and there's one hiding to
6:32
say how big they grew you can literally
6:34
be looking somewhere and you just
6:36
suddenly find a cucumber hiding
6:37
somewhere and you're like wow where did
6:40
that come from and it can be massive um
6:44
but I always do well with my cucumbers
6:47
and what I also do is I put some chicken
6:49
pellets in the soil as well so that it
6:52
breaks down over two to three months and
6:54
gives it continuous food right through
6:57
up until it fru in
7:00
and also I give them a feed weekly until
7:03
the flowers and the fruit start
7:04
appearing and then once the flowers in
7:07
the fruit start appearing then I'll feed
7:09
them probably twice a week because the
7:11
more they grow the plants the more food
7:14
they'll need the more energy they'll
7:16
need in growing those cucumber plants
7:19
now depending on how many cucumbers you
7:21
want growing on it sometimes if it's got
7:23
quite a few growing on it already you
7:25
can take the flowers off what haven't
7:27
developed so that it concentrates on the
7:30
Cucumbers that are growing or if you
7:32
want a continuous crop I sometimes just
7:34
leave them on and once one cucumber's
7:37
ready then another one will start
7:38
growing on the flowers and obviously if
7:41
you're going them in a greenhouse or
7:43
poly tunnel you'll need to make sure you
7:45
leave your doors open so that the bees
7:47
can get in there and pollinate the
7:49
flowers so that they do pollinate and
7:51
you do get some cucumbers on them if not
7:54
you can just go around with a paintbrush
7:55
and tickle each flow and that will help
7:58
pollinate the flowers
8:00
and hopefully produce some more
8:02
delicious cucumbers so yeah they are
8:05
pretty easy to grow cucumbers if You'
8:07
never tried growing them before I do
8:09
advise to go out and get some you will
8:11
have a good success with them Market
8:14
more variety are a brilliant variety to
8:16
grow now you possibly have chance to
8:20
plant some if you've not planted some uh
8:22
because they'll grow up until October
8:25
but you're best off probably having a
8:27
look in a garden center or something
8:29
like that seeing if you can find some
8:30
cheap ones to stick in but I do advise
8:33
giving cucumbers a try let me know if
8:36
you're going to try some cucumbers send
8:38
me a message on Instagram I always like
8:40
to hear people's feedback from the
8:42
episode and yeah I'm going to be sharing
8:45
lots of tips and advice on my cucumbers
8:47
and photos of them as well once they
8:49
start growing so that's going to be our
8:51
next job potting up 50 cucumber plants
8:54
which is going to be fun and yeah I'll
8:56
do a video as well of it all fastened up
8:59
with them on The netting and everything
9:00
like that in the polyon so make sure you
9:02
