tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben well we said we'd be
0:51
back with more episodes and we certainly
0:53
are our plan is to start recording all
0:55
of the week's episodes at the weekend so
0:57
that you got them all to listen to all
0:59
throughout the week they'll be uploaded
1:01
around 7:00 in the morning so that you
1:03
can listen to them on the way to work or
1:06
whether you're walking the dog or down
1:08
at the allotment but they'll be all
1:09
there for you to enjoy now if you're new
1:12
to this podcast make sure you give us a
1:14
follow to stay up to date with this we
1:17
like to share our allotment journey and
1:20
we also like sharing tips and advice on
1:23
what we're
1:24
doing and in today's episode as I
1:26
mentioned yesterday in yesterday's
1:28
podcast if you've not listened to that
1:30
go and give it a listen to we're talking
1:32
about everything that you can plant in
1:35
November yes you can plant stuff in
1:38
November and we've certainly planted a
1:40
few stuff down at our alotment in the
1:43
end of October so you can still plant
1:46
them now in November we don't grow much
1:48
through the winter periods but I like to
1:50
have a few things in so that I can see
1:53
stuff growing so what sort of stuff can
1:56
we plant in November and as I always say
1:59
is that have a notebook or anything like
2:02
that so that you can make notes of all
2:04
the things that you can do and feel free
2:06
to try and plant some of them we've
2:09
planted quite a few of these vegetables
2:11
so hopefully you can grow along with me
2:13
and let me know how you get on down at
2:16
your alotment or the garden so usually
2:18
we talk about what vegetables you can
2:20
plant what flowers you can plant and
2:23
what fruit you can plant so first off
2:25
we're going to talk about what
2:26
vegetables you can plant during November
2:30
and the first off is Autumn onions now
2:33
we have got our Autumn onions in we've
2:35
got some yellow ones we've got some red
2:36
ones and we've netted them all over to
2:39
stop the pigeons and the birds pinching
2:40
them and yeah they like to eat the green
2:43
tops of them once the shoot start
2:45
popping through but once they get big
2:46
enough we take the neted off and usually
2:48
they come with stand
2:50
themselves so get your Autumn onions in
2:53
the ones that are in the garden centers
2:55
now are the autum onions not the summer
2:58
ones so go and get get some autum onions
3:00
and give them a try and just fill one of
3:02
your beds in and they'll be ready around
3:05
June or July time and yeah obviously you
3:09
can be planting more stuff out once
3:11
you've harvested them so fill a bed in
3:14
and you might as well sew some and get
3:15
some planted and see how well you get
3:19
on
3:20
garlic now is the time to plant garlic
3:23
you don't want to plant it in March time
3:25
you want to plant it now the reason why
3:27
we plant garlic now is because it needs
3:29
the cold weather to crack the cloves to
3:33
form the garlic without the cold weather
3:35
the garlic won't form into the bulb that
3:38
it makes so if you're wanting to grow
3:40
some garlic grow some now we have got
3:43
absolutely loads in at my allotment I
3:44
must have planted about 50 plants I've
3:47
got absolutely loads here we've got
3:48
loads of different varieties we've
3:50
labeled them all up so that we can
3:51
feedback on which ones do well and yeah
3:54
we got some sent to us and we got some
3:56
off Amazon now if you're wanting to grow
3:58
some garlic you can some from the
4:01
supermarket but make sure it's either
4:04
from the UK or from Europe because it's
4:06
used to the climates that we have don't
4:08
grow the garlic what's from China
4:10
because it'll be used to hotter climates
4:13
so try and stick to European ones the
4:15
best way to get some is from the garden
4:18
center because it'll be the right garlic
4:20
to grow peas I've never grown peas
4:24
before in the winter but you can grow a
4:26
variety of peas called meteor which can
4:29
tolerate the cold these peas perfect for
4:31
winter growing and will be ready to
4:33
harvest in the early Springtime planting
4:36
them now ensures they'll survive Winters
4:39
chill and give you an early crop in
4:41
springtime so again obviously if you're
4:44
sting peas you can either start them off
4:45
in the ground or you can start them off
4:48
in the greenhouse in pots and stuff like
4:50
that just be careful because my mats
4:52
will enjoy them because there's not much
4:54
around for them to eat at the moment so
4:57
just be careful and make sure they keep
4:59
them protected the same goes for broad
5:01
beans not much around for them to eat at
5:03
the moment but if you want them to grow
5:05
some broad beans it's a good time to
5:07
grow them now because rather than
5:09
through the summer varieties because
5:11
when they're ready to harvest it'll be
5:12
before the blackfly emerge and obviously
5:16
when you've grow them in March and they
5:18
ready around June July time they covered
5:20
in Black Fly which is not usually very
5:21
nice is it they never harm the crop but
5:24
obviously they never look nice we all
5:26
the black fly on them so sew some now
5:29
and they'll be ready for before the
5:30
black fly appear asparagus asparagus is
5:34
so expensive in the supermarket to
5:36
purchase but why not try planting some
5:39
crowns now and in a few years time
5:41
you'll be harvesting lots of asparagus
5:44
and saving absolutely loads of money
5:47
spring onions obviously where they get
5:49
the names from so if you plant them now
5:52
they'll be ready for spring time now I
5:54
usually plant them in clumps so that
5:56
they rather than Rose because they form
5:59
better when they're in a clump rather
6:01
than planting them all individually CU
6:03
they're very tiny so you can just uh
6:06
start a few off in a plant pot and then
6:08
once they've started growing just
6:09
transfer the full plant pot into the
6:12
ground rather than separate them all
6:14
just plant them all straight in and let
6:15
them grow in a little Clump and this
6:17
should do absolutely amazing so that is
6:20
all the vegetables what you can plant
6:22
this month for
6:26
November so next up we're going to talk
6:28
about all the fruit that you can plant
6:30
during November now November is the best
6:32
PL time to plant fruit not in the summer
6:35
time you want to be planting fruit in
6:37
the winter time the reason for this is
6:39
that the plants are dormant and they
6:41
focus on growing The Roots they get all
6:43
the water they need to help them root
6:45
and they'll grow fantastic rather than
6:47
planting them in summer when they're
6:48
concentrated on growing the fruit rather
6:50
than growing The Roots it's harder to
6:53
keep them going so plant any fruit that
6:55
you want to grow on your alotment or
6:57
garden during the winter months black
7:00
bries are the first things on our list
7:02
and if you've never grown if you've got
7:05
normal black Brees that are foret get
7:08
rid of them and replace them with
7:10
formless black Brees trust me it's a
7:12
game changer the size of my whips swap
7:15
have come out from my black BR are
7:17
absolutely massive and the size of the
7:21
black Bri are been amazing and they're a
7:26
life changer obviously I grew mine I I
7:29
bought two plants and the amount of
7:32
black Brees I've had off them that go
7:34
all the way down the side of my plot
7:36
they're absolutely huge and me and my
7:39
neighbor absolutely love them and I just
7:41
keep tying them up and fastening them up
7:44
and yeah absolutely amazing so if you've
7:46
never grown forless blackb I definitely
7:49
do recommend purchasing
7:53
some so next up is raspberries obviously
7:57
there's two varieties of raspberries you
7:59
can get your summer varieties you can
8:00
get your Autumn varieties why not try
8:02
grow growing both to extend your season
8:05
so that you get some in summer and Su in
8:08
Autumn but make sure you plant them away
8:10
from each other so that you know which
8:11
varieties are which and just watch out
8:14
with raspberries cuz they do grow worse
8:15
than weeds they send loads of roots out
8:18
and then all the canes start popping up
8:20
everywhere obviously if you've got an
8:22
allotment it don't really really matter
8:23
where they're popping up but just watch
8:26
out with rasb cuz the canes will be
8:28
intrusive
8:31
next up is strawberries as you heard on
8:33
my podcast yesterday I planted 200
8:36
strawberry plants this year ready for
8:38
next year from my Runners now even if
8:41
you just plant like 10 they'll send out
8:43
some Runners at end of year and they'll
8:46
probably send about three or four out
8:47
from each plant so then you'll double
8:50
them every single year and you'll get
8:51
absolutely loads and I grow M through
8:54
black membrane to keep them moist and to
8:56
keep the weeds down and to protect the
8:58
strawberries CU they'll sit on top of
9:00
the black matin as well so if you're
9:03
wanting to grow some strawberries now is
9:05
the time to plant them rhubarb now if
9:09
you're wanting to grow rhubarb so
9:11
expensive to buy in the supermarket so
9:13
expensive but if you grow rhubarb you
9:16
plant the crown now but you don't
9:18
Harvest it for a year you need to leave
9:20
the crown in the ground to take root get
9:24
going and form its spot where it's going
9:28
to grow I know it might be tempting to
9:30
harvest some if you're seeing plenty of
9:32
rubar on it in its first year but don't
9:34
Harvest it you need it to take rout and
9:37
get
9:38
going blueberries now blueberries you
9:42
need to grow them in aous compost if you
9:45
want them to grow blueberries nice and
9:47
easy just plant them in a pot with
9:49
Eric's composting then rather than in
9:52
the ground and then they're easier to
9:54
feed with acious feed or to fill up with
9:56
fresh compost each year and look after
9:59
them so if you're want in some
10:01
blueberries grow them in some pots this
10:04
year currents whether you prefer black
10:07
white red all different varieties of
10:10
currents it's also a good time to plant
10:13
them now obviously they send out you can
10:15
get some massive impressive yields on
10:19
currents but the thing is with them is
10:21
that they're usually hard to pull out
10:23
all the ends on them once you harvested
10:25
them I know that's annoying but it's up
10:28
to you wherever you want to grow
10:29
currents or not but they will produce a
10:31
lot of currents usually a fantastic
10:34
Cropper and you can get some brilliant
10:37
harvests from
10:40
them next up we're going to talk about
10:43
what flowers you can plant during
10:46
November yes there is plenty of flowers
10:48
that you can be planting in November as
10:51
now is the time to be planting all the
10:53
spring bulbs yes I talk about the spring
10:56
bulbs all the time the reason why I love
10:58
the spring bulbs s is because it helps
11:00
the bees when the bees wake up from
11:02
hibernation in the springtime there's
11:04
not many flowers around so the spring
11:06
bulbs help Feed the Bees it helps give
11:09
them the energy for the year ahead and
11:12
it gives them the kickart that they need
11:14
so planting spring bulbs in the
11:15
allotment and in the garden will
11:17
encourage the bees to come and it will
11:19
help with pollination because your fruit
11:22
trees will be starting to Blossom as
11:24
well so encouraging in the bees to come
11:27
down to the flowers will help with
11:30
pollination on the fruit trees as well
11:32
so it's a win-win situation so I
11:34
encourage everybody to plant some spring
11:36
bulbs in their allotments if you've got
11:38
an allotment let me know send me a
11:42
message saying I'm going to plant some
11:44
spring bulbs just for you Ben I would
11:47
love to hear from you all saying that
11:49
because the more people I can encourage
11:51
to plant spring bulbs the better yes
11:54
they look absolutely gorgeous but they
11:55
look after our be's so what's bring
11:58
bulbs can we plant this month obviously
12:00
we can plant as tulips now is the time
12:02
to plant them because now it's getting
12:04
colder it's better for the Tulips to
12:06
grow because they do say if you plant
12:08
them earlier you can get tulip fire so
12:10
you've got to be careful daffodils you
12:13
can still plant them high Sims blue
12:16
bells aliums snow drops
12:20
crocuses all the spring bulbs can be
12:23
planted now now I've planted absolutely
12:25
loads of spring bulbs at my alotment
12:27
again every year I PL more and more my
12:30
allotment is just going to be full of
12:31
spring bulbs eventually but I planted so
12:34
many and I want to plant a load more so
12:37
I'm probably going to wait until they go
12:38
on sale at the end of November hopefully
12:41
they will do again this year because I
12:42
did they did last year and I purchased
12:44
absolutely loads fingers crossed we get
12:47
another good load of spring bulbs again
12:49
this year so obviously High SS are one
12:53
of the best spring bulbs because they
12:54
smell fantastic but they're expensive to
12:57
buy so if you can get them on for why
13:00
not
13:01
hey roses now is the time to plant roses
13:04
as well I want to get some more roses
13:06
down at my allotment so hopefully we
13:08
might get some more different colored
13:10
ones cuz we've got some gold ones we've
13:12
got some red ones so I need to have a
13:14
look at some other colors so if anyone's
13:15
got any suggestions off some cheap roses
13:18
that I can add to my alotment obviously
13:19
they don't need to Big Posh varieties we
13:22
just want some nice color and to attract
13:24
the bees as well so if you're planning
13:26
on adding roses to your garden November
13:28
is a great time time to plant them
13:30
ensure you enrich the soil with plant
13:32
food before planting and your roses will
13:34
Bloom year after year roses add elegance
13:37
and a Timeless charm to any garden and
13:39
they'll flower year after year you can
13:42
get success from your roses pansies now
13:45
I've grown absolutely loads of pansies
13:47
I've grew them all from seed I planted
13:48
them around end of July beginning of
13:50
August and they've done fantastic it's
13:52
so easy to grow from seed I didn't
13:54
realize how easy it is to grow them but
13:56
obviously now is the time to plant the
13:58
plant
13:59
FL plants I like from the garden center
14:02
stuff like that rather than growing them
14:05
from seed you won't be able to grow them
14:06
from seed at this time here you'll need
14:08
to plant the plant atual plant so if
14:11
you're wanted to add some color all the
14:12
way through winter pansies are an ideal
14:15
thing to add to your
14:17
garden so I hope you've enjoyed this
14:20
podcast for today a little funny fact is
14:23
this is the second time I've recorded
14:25
this episode because I recorded it and
14:27
then I listen to the sound quality it
14:29
was absolutely atrocious so I ended up
14:31
re-recording it all again so the time
14:34
I've spent recording this one I could
14:35
have been recording another one but oh
14:38
well I know all about what's planed in
14:40
November now because I've done it
14:43
twice but yeah I hope you've enjoyed
14:46
this podcast and I hope that you're
14:47
happy that they're all back like I said
14:49
fingers crossed we're going to get a new
14:51
podcast on every single morning for 7:00
14:54
for you to listen to so make sure you
14:57
have your bell and make sure you give me
14:58
a follow and leave a comment and I think
15:01
you can leave a rating on the podcast as
15:04
well now so the more things you do to
15:06
help me push it out the more people will
15:08
listen to it and the more people will
15:11
listen around the world so until next
15:13
