This video explains how to harvest and store vegetables so they last longer during colder months. Learn how to recognise when crops are ready to pick and how to handle them carefully to prevent damage.
The guide covers cleaning, drying and storing produce in suitable conditions to improve shelf life. It also explains simple storage methods that help keep vegetables fresh and reduce spoilage.
If you grow your own food and want to keep your harvest usable for longer, this video provides practical harvesting and storage advice suitable for common garden crops.

0:23
tricks and techniques to make your
0:25
garden and alotment thve from planting
0:28
sewing and growing we will share all the
0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brew and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben well it's been about
0:51
a couple of weeks since our last episode
0:54
and I do apologize I know I said I going
0:56
to do them every single day but we have
0:59
had a special reason why we've not been
1:01
doing podcasts every day the reason is
1:04
I've moved house well moved flat and
1:07
I've got a new place where I'm living
1:09
now so I got to see it on a like Tuesday
1:15
and I started to move straight away the
1:17
next day so it's been all systems go in
1:21
getting moved out of my old place into a
1:23
nice new brand new place which is
1:26
absolutely beautiful so peaceful so
1:29
quiet and yeah no sirens in the
1:32
background when you're listening to your
1:33
podcasts
1:35
now I can't believe how quiet actually
1:38
is it's absolutely Bliss where I'm
1:40
living now so hopefully the podcast will
1:43
sound a lot better for you from wherever
1:46
you're listening so yeah we've all
1:49
settled in and it's strange being in a
1:52
nice brand new property cuz obviously I
1:55
didn't want to bring all my old stuff
1:56
with me I've been out and bought all
1:58
brand new stuff and it looks absolutely
2:01
fantastic and thank you to those that
2:04
have commented on my posts or sent me
2:07
messages wishing me well in moving into
2:09
my new property I absolutely love it so
2:13
hopefully here's the podcast back again
2:16
and hopefully no more breaks unless we
2:19
move house again but I don't think I
2:20
will be for a few years now but yeah
2:24
thank you for all the support that you
2:25
have given me so what are we going to be
2:28
talking about today well it's actually
2:31
the 1 of no December not November 1 of
2:34
December today so we're going to talk
2:36
about everything that we got up to in
2:38
November and then tomorrow's episode
2:40
we'll start talking about all the things
2:43
you can grow and obviously all the jobs
2:46
which need doing in December so if
2:48
you're not following mate do give me a
2:50
follow and make sure you stay up to date
2:52
for them episodes dropping
2:55
shortly so what did we get up to in
2:59
November
3:00
well we absolutely blitzed my allotment
3:03
I did so much work down at the allotment
3:06
during November to say I'm only getting
3:09
like two days a week down at the plot
3:11
now that I'm back working fulltime I'm
3:16
I've absolutely done loads and I'm so
3:17
impressed with myself because of how
3:20
much I've actually got done I've managed
3:23
to clear all my allotment the all my
3:25
beds are completely empty I've cleared
3:27
out all the bind weed what growing and
3:30
dug over all my beds we have planted all
3:34
our spring bulbs they're all nicely
3:36
planted and summer starting to grow and
3:38
pop through which is absolutely
3:40
fantastic we harvested all my Christmas
3:44
potatoes yes it's not Christmas yet but
3:47
they were ready the plants have died off
3:49
so there were no more growing in them so
3:51
we harvested all of them
3:54
we dug up our geraniums and we mov them
3:58
into the shed which was a good sign
4:00
because we had snow we did have snow so
4:04
it's good job I got them in and
4:06
obviously we've had the frost which
4:07
would have killed them and looking at
4:09
them today they're still alive they're
4:11
still standing which is a good sign
4:13
fingers crossed we can keep them alive
4:16
all winter we also potted up all our
4:19
Salvia cuttings which I took earlier in
4:22
the year they're all growing well so
4:24
it's case of keeping them all watered
4:27
and keep it on top of that side of
4:28
things and and obviously on my allotment
4:31
side they'll be turning the water off
4:32
over winter so we've got to keep things
4:37
watered in the shed we've got a big
4:39
massive bucket full uh well a wheelie
4:41
bin full of water so hopefully that'll
4:43
last me all winter I'm also feeding the
4:47
cat on a regular basis the cat's still
4:49
visiting my shed and coming for its food
4:52
and my dad goes down on a daily basis to
4:54
go and feed it he absolutely loves going
4:56
down to see the cat so that's a good
4:58
thing what else have we been up to we
5:02
have been sorting out my fruit trees and
5:06
sorting out all my Blackberry canes and
5:09
Ras uh Loganberry canes I've been busy
5:13
with them today actually been sorting
5:15
them out tying them back to the fence in
5:18
chopping off any old branches and shoots
5:21
what were're growing on them and the old
5:23
signs of the old black pris I've snipped
5:25
off all them and tided them all
5:28
up what
5:30
we've cleared round all my rhubarb we've
5:33
got rid of all the brambles on the plot
5:35
which was absolutely
5:37
awful dealing with brambles is horrible
5:41
job but we've done it all we've got all
5:43
that done and yeah it's pretty much
5:47
looking very neat and tidy now uh
5:50
there's still a lot of work left to do
5:52
oh and I've been uh tidying up inside my
5:55
shed we did a bit uh a few weeks ago
5:58
when it was absolutely ch it down and I
6:01
did some today because again it were
6:03
Ching it down when I got to the
6:04
allotment but when I got left the
6:06
allotment today it was absolutely
6:08
gorgeous you wouldn't have thought it
6:09
were December it were warm it was sunny
6:12
I felt like I was getting Sun tanned
6:15
which I couldn't believe but yeah it
6:17
were gorgeous down there so we've done
6:21
all that so we've got a lot of jobs left
6:24
to do during this month of December
6:27
we're going to be obviously digging over
6:29
the bed again I'm going to do that on a
6:30
monthly basis because Roots will start
6:34
still grow in the ground even if you
6:36
don't see Weeds on top you might still
6:38
get Roots growing in the ground so if we
6:40
keep digging them over and pulling the
6:42
roots out then we'll keep on top of it
6:44
and hopefully less weeds will be growing
6:47
in them beds next year and obviously I
6:50
don't want the bind weed growing back so
6:52
getting as much as that out as possible
6:55
while it's winter is the perfect
6:58
opportunity
7:00
we're also going to be looking at sewing
7:02
some seeds this month as well but stay
7:05
tuned for what we're going to be sewing
7:07
I'll share them with you on a later date
7:10
so we've got all that done and this
7:12
month I'm thinking about it might be
7:14
time to start prepping my shed start
7:18
doing all the renovation work inside it
7:20
what I'm wanting to get done this winter
7:22
so I'm going to look forward to that
7:24
project side of it but next week we're
7:27
going to be busy sorting out around my
7:29
stre strawberry beds we're going to get
7:31
that area sorted and once that's sorted
7:33
then I'll be happy enough to leave the
7:36
rest of the plot until next year and we
7:39
can concentrate on doing everything in
7:41
the shed that we want to get done for
7:44
the winter period And once the shed's
7:45
done then we can concentrate on going
7:48
back outside which might be around
7:51
February time obviously depending on the
7:54
weather but hopefully we'll be getting
7:57
lots done down there we've also invested
8:00
in some bird feeders down at the
8:02
alotment with feeding the birds on a
8:03
regular basis we've got plenty of
8:05
different seeds and feeds down there for
8:07
the birds and I did see a rat screwing
8:09
around today so at least we've got the
8:12
cat to catch the
8:14
rats I nearly struggle saying that but
8:17
yeah at least we've got the cat to catch
8:19
the rats so hopefully he will get them
8:21
and stop
8:24
them but yeah I'm happy with everything
8:27
that's been going on and I like like I
8:30
say I do apologize for not coming on and
8:33
doing the podcasts but obviously I've
8:37
had more exciting things to be doing at
8:39
the moment with moving into the property
8:41
and setting up all my setup and getting
8:43
that
8:44
done we going to be doing quite a bit of
8:46
new content this month as well and I
8:50
hope that you enjoy it I've dropped one
8:52
already today a Christmas gardening joke
8:56
and if you think it's a bit corny
8:59
they'll get get a lot worse trust me
9:01
I've recorded some for every day this
9:03
week so make sure you stay tuned for the
9:06
daily Christmas joke uh that'll be on
9:08
Instagram Facebook and YouTube for you
9:11
to watch and Tik Tok so stay tuned for
9:15
the daily joke of the day they're all
9:17
Christmas related and they're all
9:19
gardening and allotment related so I
9:21
hope that you do enjoy them if you do
9:23
see them do give him a like give him a
9:25
comment as it does help push him out and
9:28
we're going to be doing a lot more
9:29
content hopefully this month we filmed a
9:33
allotment tour video today obviously
9:35
there's not much to show you but you can
9:37
have a look and see how things are
9:39
getting on down at the allotment at the
9:41
moment and hopefully we're going to be
9:43
doing some other types of content down
9:45
at the plot over the winter months just
9:47
showing you what we're getting up to and
9:49
different topics that we're talking
9:51
about so I hope you're enjoying all this
9:53
new content as it is taking up a lot of
9:56
my time now but I absolutely love doing
9:58
it and and the more people that see it
10:01
the more people that follow the more
10:03
I'll definitely enjoy doing it and so
10:05
many people listen to my podcast last
10:08
month uh it was probably one of the best
10:10
months for downloads out of all the
10:13
times that I've been doing these
10:14
podcasts so it encourages me to do them
10:17
more and more and yeah I hope that
10:19
you're enjoying them so I hope you come
10:22
back to the next podcast we're going to
10:24
be talking about everything that you can
10:26
grow in December and I'll talk about
10:30
what I'm going to be sewing in December
10:31
as well so stay tuned for that and the
10:35
episode after that we'll talk about all
10:36
the jobs which you can do in your garden
10:39
and allotment in December to keep them
