Simple steps to overwinter your herbs.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. In
0:06
today's video, we're going to talk about
0:07
how to overwinter your herbs in your
0:09
garden. I haven't got many herbs growing
0:12
in my garden. I've got some uh mint and
0:15
I've got some lemon balm. The lemon balm
0:18
is absolutely fantastic. If you're not
0:19
growing lemon balm, make sure you grow
0:21
it because it's great in cups of tea and
0:24
yeah, it just calms you down. It's
0:26
absolutely gorgeous. I have it in hot
0:28
water, not I have it in the hot water.
0:30
So, it's absolutely great and it's
0:32
calming and it's relaxing and it's great
0:34
herb. It comes back year after year and
0:37
it's fantastic smelling as well. You can
0:39
rub past it, rub your fingers on it. It
0:41
smells absolutely gorgeous. So, the main
0:44
things to overwinter your herbs are
0:47
bring tender herbs like basil indoors.
0:50
Now, if you're growing it in the ground,
0:51
obviously you need to dig it up, put it
0:53
in a pot, move it into a poly tunnel or
0:56
greenhouse and look after it over
0:59
winter. If not, just plant a new plant
1:03
next year. You can easily get them from
1:04
the supermarket or the garden center,
1:06
replant them or even grow them from seed
1:08
if you want to. So, move your basil or
1:12
any tender herbs indoors.
1:14
Cut back any perennial herbs and tidy
1:18
them up. That is one thing that you need
1:21
to do at this time of year. They're
1:22
dying back. So, snip them all back, take
1:25
them home, try them out, use them in
1:27
your herb cupboards and yeah, enjoy the
1:30
herbs that you have got and then next
1:32
year they'll spring back to life and
1:36
give you some fantastic herbs in the
1:38
garden again the year after. It's a
1:40
great thing to have herbs in the garden.
1:42
I'm definitely going to have a herb
1:44
garden in my plot. I haven't got much
1:46
herb garden at the moment, but we're
1:49
going to do one at the top of my plot in
1:50
my new area. So, I'm looking forward to
1:52
trying all the different herbs myself. I
1:54
probably won't use them in foods, but
1:56
I'll just use them to attract the bees,
1:57
to have the nice smells, and yeah, have
2:00
it as a calming, relaxing area.
2:03
Mulch your hardy herbs for extra
2:05
protection. If you've got hardy herbs,
2:07
put some mulch around them. It'll keep
2:08
the ground warmer and it will protect
2:11
them a lot more stronger over the winter
2:13
periods, especially in cold times. Keep
2:16
pots off cold wet ground. If you've got
2:20
wet cold ground, make sure you put them
2:23
on bricks or on plant pot lifters so
2:26
that they're not touching the cold
2:27
ground. It keeps them that extra bit
2:29
warm. And if you've got terra cotta
2:31
pots, maybe put some bubble wrap around
2:34
them as well. It'll stop them cracking
2:35
or freezing if there's water in them.
2:37
and it will again keep plant warmer over
2:40
the winter period. Water sparingly.
2:43
Avoid soggy roots. You don't want soggy
2:46
roots over the winter. Obviously, you
2:48
can't help it if it rains, but don't
2:50
tend to water them as much over the
2:52
autumn and winter period.
2:55
Take cutings to grow fresh plants. If
2:57
you're growing your herbs, why not take
2:59
some cutings from them? You can't beat
3:02
free plants. So, they're so easy to do,
3:04
right? just take cutings off them, put
3:06
them in some water, wait for them to
3:08
start rooting, and then put them in some
3:10
soil, and you can possibly have more and
3:12
more plants next year in your garden, or
3:15
give them away to friends and family so
3:17
that they can benefit and enjoy them as
3:19
well. So, I hope you've enjoyed this
