Welcome to our August roundup. Yes,
0:03
welcome to Gardening with Ben. And in
0:05
this video, we're going to talk about
0:07
our August roundup. How well we've
0:09
succeeded, how well we've failed, and
0:11
yeah, what our plans are for September,
0:14
as I do love September time, and you'll
0:17
find out why I love September in a
0:19
minute. So, what has been successful in
0:22
August? Now, this has probably been one
0:24
of my most successful years for cooking
0:27
apples. have had absolutely hundreds of
0:30
it and I'm going to be picking all the
0:32
rest of it this weekend ready for the
0:35
apple crumbles and yeah, I'm going to be
0:37
storing them all up throughout the
0:39
winter period. It's going to have so
0:41
many. I feel sorry for my mom. She's the
0:42
one who's peeling them and cutting them
0:44
all and making the crumbles, but she
0:46
offers. So yeah, I'm looking forward to
0:48
that. We've also had millions of pair
0:51
plums off as well. They've done
0:52
absolutely phenomenal, really good this
0:55
year. Uh I've given it a prune back
0:58
because you're meant to prune it in the
0:59
summertime. You're not meant to prune
1:00
plum trees in the winter period as that
1:02
can enhance uh silver leaf. So I've
1:06
pruned it all back ready for next year.
1:08
So I'll probably won't get as many next
1:10
year or if any. Uh it seems to always
1:13
through every couple of years my plum
1:14
tree, but hopefully we will get some in
1:18
a couple of years. But we've got another
1:20
couple of new plum trees which have
1:22
started to get established on. We had a
1:24
couple on them this year. So hopefully
1:26
next year we'll get a good crop on our
1:28
new plum trees next year. Blackberries,
1:32
we've had loads of blackberries off on
1:33
our forless blackberry plant. It's still
1:35
producing them now. Fornless
1:37
blackberries seem to go on for ages.
1:38
They seem to last longer than the for
1:41
varieties. So hopefully we'll continue
1:43
to get lots of blackberries and we'll
1:44
add them try crumble as well to give
1:46
them some extra flavor. We've also got
1:49
loads of eating apples and pears coming,
1:51
but they're not usually ready until
1:53
September time. So hopefully in
1:55
September we'll be harvesting all them
1:57
off.
1:59
We've also had the best year ever for
2:01
our sweet corn. It's been absolutely
2:03
phenomenal. It's been early. Yes, it's
2:06
very early. Uh you're not usually
2:08
harvesting sweet corn until September
2:10
time, but we've had a fantastic crop
2:12
this year. We've had an early autumn
2:15
blast. Everything's thinking it's autumn
2:18
already, so everything is producing
2:20
early. Pumpkins are early. I'm going to
2:22
be harvesting my pumpkins this weekend.
2:25
They're ready. And the way that you know
2:27
that pumpkins are ready is when the
2:29
stalk dies off. It goes brown and that's
2:32
when the pumpkins are ready for
2:34
harvesting. So, we've done all that.
2:36
We've also started re doing up our
2:39
aotment uh entrance to the plot and
2:42
making that all nicer, ready for next
2:44
year. We've put up a new archway. Uh,
2:48
we've created some new beds which I'm
2:50
going to put all spring bulbs in and do
2:52
up all that area as I don't usually have
2:54
the spring bulbs in that area. I usually
2:56
have them in a couple of other areas.
2:57
So, I'm extending my spring bulb areas
2:59
ready for next year. So, hopefully lots
3:02
more color and lots more photos. You do
3:05
know I love a good selfie. But, we do
3:08
we're going to be having loads of spring
3:09
bulbs in there. And that is why I'm
3:13
excited for September because in the
3:16
supermarkets, in the shops, all the
3:18
spring bulbs are out now. Um, yes, it's
3:21
exciting as I do love spring bulbs down
3:24
at the a lotment. It attracts the bees.
3:25
It feeds them when they wake up from
3:27
hibernation and it, yeah, it brings them
3:30
to your a lotment. It brings all the
3:32
bees to the a lotment. So, I love it.
3:35
And don't be encouraged to plant them
3:37
yet. Plant them in October, November
3:39
time. It's spring bulb. So yeah, if you
3:41
buy them, keep them somewhere dry, ready
3:43
for planting out in October. So we're
3:46
going to be stockpiling before they all
3:48
get sold out and hopefully get some
3:51
beautiful displays down here at the a
3:53
lotment next year. But we've got a good
3:56
we've had a good year. It's not been the
3:58
best year down at the plot. Um I've not
4:00
grown as much this year. I've not grown
4:02
peas. I've not grown runner beans. Uh my
4:05
coettes haven't done very well, but I've
4:07
seen a lot of posts with people not
4:08
doing well with corettes. Um
4:12
yeah, my potatoes, I didn't get no
4:14
potatoes because the squirrels ate them
4:16
all. Uh but we've planted some Christmas
4:19
potatoes which are popping through now
4:21
and hopefully they'll be ready to
4:23
harvest in December. So if you're
4:25
wanting to grow some Christmas potatoes,
4:27
plant them in tubs in the poly tunnel
4:29
and they'll be ready for December time.
4:31
So I'm looking forward to them. But I've
4:34
had a good August. I had a few days off
4:36
work and I spent quite a bit of time
4:38
down here enjoying being doing what I
4:40
love most. If only this was a full-time
4:43
job at blogging for you all. But yeah,
4:47
I do appreciate everybody that does
4:49
comment on my posts, that likes them,
4:51
that shares them, that interacts with
4:54
them, and keeps me motivated. Doing all
4:58
these videos makes me want to come down
5:01
and make my a lotment keep looking good,
5:04
not all the plots looking good, but I do
5:06
always show the worst bits and the good
5:08
bits as well. So yeah, I hope that
5:11
you've all enjoyed the videos that I've
5:13
been putting out recently. So until next
5:15
time everyone, make sure that you do
5:17
give us a follow. Make sure you feel
5:19
free to share and comment. And
5:21
tomorrow's video will be what to plant
5:25
in September. what vegetables plant in
5:28
September. So stay tuned for that one.
