What vegetables to sew in April? Welcome
0:02
to Gardening with Ben and we're here
0:04
with our monthly video on what to sew
0:07
this month in April when it comes to
0:08
vegetables. Now, I hope you've got a
0:10
long list of paper ready because it's a
0:12
long list of vegetables that you can sew
0:14
this month. Literally, you can sew
0:16
everything this month if you want to
0:18
bypass the video. But yes, you can get
0:20
sewing most things now. So, save this
0:23
video or make a list of all these
0:26
vegetables to sew this month in April.
0:29
So, first up is beetroot. A great
0:31
vegetable, a great crop, and you'll
0:33
always get some great rewards from it.
0:35
Next up are carrots and parsnips. They
0:38
need somewhere deep to grow so that they
0:40
get a long big root on them and get
0:42
growing really well. Next up is radish.
0:46
A great crop and you'll always get great
0:48
rewards from it. Next up are your salad
0:51
leaves like lettuce, spinach, rocket,
0:54
all great ones. Iceberg lettucees, cut
0:57
and come again lettucees. Any lettuce or
1:00
salad leaves you can get sewing. Now,
1:03
next up is Swiss chard. Grows a bit like
1:05
rhubarb, but it's tastes totally
1:07
different. But yeah, Swiss chard you can
1:10
grow now. Spring onion. I don't grow
1:12
them in thinned out. I grow them in
1:15
clumps and they grow really well
1:16
together. So, you don't need necessarily
1:18
need to thin them out. They will grow
1:20
really well together.
1:22
Next up is turnips. Another great
1:24
vegetable to grow. Next up are your
1:27
peas, your beans, your runna beans, your
1:29
French beans. All your peas, all your
1:32
beans can be sewn this month as we've
1:35
been holding off till April to get all
1:37
the beans sewn because that is the month
1:39
to sew them. You can either sew them
1:41
directly into the ground or in pots
1:43
first. I grow all mine in pots as mice
1:46
and rats like to take them and birds
1:48
like to pinch the tops off them. So, I
1:49
get them to a decent size before I plant
1:52
them out and the chance of frost has
1:53
passed.
1:55
Next up are leaks. Get sewing these now
1:57
and they'll be ready around November,
2:00
December time. Corab, another great
2:03
addition to the garden. An unusual
2:05
vegetable, but a great creamy taste to
2:08
it. Next up is pack choy and mustard
2:11
greens. Another great addition, easy to
2:14
grow and can have some great rewards
2:16
from it. Now, next up are all your
2:18
squash plants like your corettes, your
2:21
pumpkins, your winter squash. All those
2:24
can be sewn this month. Again, I get
2:28
them to a decent size before planting
2:30
them out and before the chance of frost
2:33
comes. Um, I don't plant them out until
2:36
the frost has gone because the frost can
2:39
damage them. So, get them to a decent
2:41
size, get them growing indoors, use all
2:43
your window sills, all your greenhouse
2:45
shelves, everything. can get them
2:46
growing and hopefully get some great
2:49
crops from them. Obviously remember you
2:51
don't need many corette plants because
2:52
they'll produce absolutely loads. Next
2:55
up is my favorite sweet corn. Now I've
2:57
sewn about 80 sweet corn seeds because I
3:00
love them and I got some great crops
3:02
last year. If you saw my videos last
3:04
year, we got some great crops from them.
3:08
Now you need a big area to grow your
3:09
sweet corn in as you don't grow them in
3:11
those. You grow them in blocks. So
3:14
you'll grow them in about eight rows so
3:17
that they can pollinate with each other
3:19
in the wind to get your sweet corn to
3:21
produce. If you've not sewn your
3:23
tomatoes, get sewing them now, early
3:25
April, because we are running out of
3:27
time. They will catch up and I didn't
3:30
sew mine until March time because that's
3:32
when I've always done them and they
3:34
always do catch up. Next up are your
3:37
brassacas like your cabbage, your
3:39
cauliflower, your broccoli, your
3:41
sprouts. All those can be sewn this
3:43
month uh for great crops throughout the
3:46
summer period. So have a look at them
3:48
and get some sewn, but make sure you net
3:51
them because butterflies like to lay
3:53
their eggs on them and the caterpillars
3:55
will devour them. So you need really
3:57
thin netting over them when you're
3:58
planting them out. The ones that you can
4:01
sew and plant straight in the ground now
4:04
are your potatoes. Get your potatoes in
4:07
the ground all seasons like your first
4:09
ear, second earies, main crop. So plant
4:12
them all now and they will be ready at
4:14
different periods. That's the reason for
4:16
the first earies they'll take so long.
4:18
Second earies take a bit longer and the
4:20
main crop take even longer. So get those
4:22
planted now. Next up are your onion
4:24
sets. But make sure you net them because
4:27
birds will pull them out as soon as the
4:28
green shoots appear and nibble the tops
4:31
off them. So make sure they're well
4:33
netted. And finally are your shelots.
4:36
Get your shellots planted a bit like
4:37
onions. Make sure that you net them. And
4:40
yeah, lots to be sewn this month. Let me
4:42
know what you're going to be sewing.
4:44
I've nearly done all my sewing now
4:46
finally, but yeah, we're getting ready
4:48
to get everything growing, and then
4:50
we'll be potting them all on. So, make
4:52
sure you share this video, save it, and
4:54
make a list of all the vegetables to be
4:57
grown. Drop us a follow to stay up to
4:58
date with all our growing down here at
5:00
the aotment. Until next time, everyone.
5:02
Remember, keep smiling, keep shining,
5:04
and keep gardening. My bad girl.
