This video shows how to grow sweet peas from seed using simple step-by-step methods. I explain how to prepare the seeds, sow them correctly, and give them the best conditions for strong germination.
I also share tips on supporting plants, watering, and regular picking to encourage plenty of colourful, fragrant flowers throughout the season. A practical guide for gardeners who want beautiful climbing flowers and reliable results.

Let's sew our sweet peas. Welcome to
0:02
Gardening with Ben. And today we're
0:04
going to be sewing our sweet peas. You
0:06
may have seen a previous video of us
0:07
sewing some and they've all germinated.
0:10
They're doing absolutely fantastic in
0:12
our Oakland root trainer. So, we're
0:14
going to sew some more because sweet
0:17
peas are so scented, gorgeous, smell
0:20
beautiful, look gorgeous, and they're
0:22
perfect for vasees and the bees as well.
0:24
So, we're going to get absolutely loads
0:26
of these growing. So, we're going to
0:27
show you the best way to get them
0:29
germinated and get growing down at the
0:32
plot because it's not as case as just
0:34
sewing the seeds. You can do a little
0:36
magic trick to give them that bit of
0:39
push and hopefully germinate a lot
0:41
faster. So, let's have a look what we're
0:43
doing. So, we've got three pots and
0:45
we've got some water, some clean water
0:47
as well. So, what we're going to do is
0:49
we're going to put the seeds in some
0:52
water to soak for 24 hours. That will
0:54
help soften the shells up, which will
0:57
help them speed up with germination. So,
1:00
yep, we've got three bowls because we
1:02
got three varieties so that we know
1:03
which varieties are which. And yeah,
1:05
let's get them soaking overnight. So,
1:07
there we are. We've put a bit of water
1:08
in the bottom of each one. So, leave
1:11
them for 24 hours and then we're going
1:13
to sew them up and get them potted.
1:16
So, we've had the sweet peas now soaking
1:18
for 24 hours. So that will have loosened
1:21
the shells up and it will help speed and
1:24
speed up germination. Now we're going to
1:26
be sewing these in our Oakland garden
1:29
root trainers. Now if you've not seen
1:30
the video, go and check them out as they
1:33
are absolutely brilliant. These are the
1:35
root trainers which I'm going to be
1:36
growing them in. And the best thing
1:38
about these is that they split apart so
1:41
that you can just take them out and then
1:43
plant them straight in the ground when
1:45
they're ready to be planted out once the
1:47
chance of frost is gone. So that is
1:49
perfect for growing them in. So we're
1:51
going to sew these in here and hopefully
1:54
get some good sweet peas. We've now got
1:57
already a batch growing. They're all
1:59
germinating already. So we'll be
2:01
planting those out around May time when
2:03
it warms up. So yeah, let's get another
2:05
batch started and let's get all these
2:07
sewn. We've got some great colored
2:09
varieties. I can't wait to see these in
2:11
flower and smell them down at the plot.
2:14
So we've got them filled up with
2:16
compost. So now we need to get the seeds
2:19
and place them in. We might put four
2:21
seeds in each one, I think, because we
2:23
need to try and get all them seeds in
2:25
this root trainer. So we'll give it a
2:27
try and see how well we get on and
2:29
succeed. So we've sewn all them now and
2:32
we've put labels in each row so that we
2:34
know which colors they are when they
2:35
germinate because then we can arrange
2:37
them and hopefully get some nice
2:39
arrangements growing on the a lotment
2:41
and some nice flowers. So, next up is to
2:43
just give them a water and then we'll
2:45
put the propagator lid over the top
2:47
which comes with it and we'll put them
2:49
in our mini greenhouse to start
2:51
germinating. Put them in our mini
2:53
greenhouse and what they'll look like in
2:55
a few weeks is something like this. Look
2:58
at them. Absolutely amazing. They're
3:01
growing so well in the poly tunnel in
3:03
the mini greenhouse. Absolutely amazing.
3:06
So, hopefully we'll get a good harvest
3:09
of sweet peas this year down at the
3:10
plot. I'm absolutely outstandard with
3:13
how well they're getting on. So, make
3:15
sure you hit that follow button to stay
3:16
up to date with how well our sweet peas
3:18
get on. We post a regular weekly video
3:21
of what's happening in the poly tunnel.
3:22
So, stay tuned for that and we'll keep
3:24
you updated on how well they're growing.
3:26
Until next time everyone, remember keep
3:28
smiling, keep shining and keep gardening
3:30
with Ben everyone.
