This video explains how to prepare your garden during autumn so plants and soil are ready for colder weather.
It covers clearing beds, improving soil, removing plant debris, protecting crops and organising growing space. You’ll also learn simple preparation steps that help prevent problems and make spring planting easier.
Good autumn preparation improves soil health and supports stronger plant growth in the next season.
These tips apply to vegetable gardens, flower beds, raised beds, containers and small gardens

0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34

0:36
have been up to on the Alum so sit back
0:40
grab a brew and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben well I've been saying
0:51
it for days we've not had no more rain
0:53
and guess what while I was at the
0:55
alotment I posted a photo this morning
0:57
saying that it's a beautiful day get out
0:59
in the garden get your jobs done and it
1:01
started
1:03
raining of all the days for it to rain
1:06
while I'm actually at the alotment when
1:08
I need to be getting my work done down
1:10
there however it didn't stop me as
1:14
obviously I want to start doing all my
1:16
shed up over winter on the inside so I
1:18
went inside for half an hour and did
1:21
some tidying up in there while the rain
1:24
passed it didn't stay for long the rain
1:26
but at least we've had bit of rain so it
1:29
does help with the garlic and the onions
1:31
what are in the ground at the moment to
1:33
keep them watered and get them growing
1:35
well so yeah we just need a bit more
1:38
rain but hold off on that because people
1:41
have been telling me that snow is
1:44
forecast this week will we get some snow
1:47
who knows but I've been looking at the
1:49
temperatures and it's going to get down
1:51
to about minus one at night 0 de so it
1:55
is going to start getting colder and
1:58
yeah the temperatures are going to be
1:59
around around five or six degrees in the
2:01
daytime so it's going to start feeling a
2:03
bit more nippy it's not going to feel
2:05
like what it's feeling like now it was
2:08
absolutely gorgeous down at the alotment
2:10
this morning it weren even that cold I
2:13
couldn't believe what temperatures we're
2:15
having in November it's bizarre but it
2:19
was the perfect day for getting lots
2:21
done down at the alotment even though we
2:22
had a bit of rain it didn't stop me for
2:25
long so what have we been up to down at
2:28
the plot today
2:30
well I went to my parents house first
2:33
for my uh coffee and to catch up with
2:36
them cuz I I only see them at weekends
2:39
so I went round to theirs and my dad
2:42
said to me oh I've been um I put one of
2:45
your bird feeders back up uh the square
2:48
SE block one and he says but on the
2:50
floor there was a SE Block in plastic as
2:55
if like i' not taken it out of the
2:57
plastic and I went well I'm sure I took
2:59
it out of the plastic when I put it in
3:00
the SE block I won't put it in in the
3:02
plastic so I went down to the alotment
3:04
after i' been to prep parents and all
3:07
the Su blocks had gone from out of my
3:11
poly tunnel there must have been
3:14
about 12 so they' all gone and I just
3:19
looked around the poly tunnel and
3:21
outside and there were rappers all over
3:23
the place so some's had them some's
3:26
enjoyed all my Su blocks
3:30
so yeah I couldn't put no sweet blocks
3:32
up today um but I managed to put all my
3:35
bird seed all my nuts all my SE balls
3:41
and my SE uh pellets as well so I got
3:46
quite a lot of bird seed and uh food put
3:48
up but I couldn't put my suet blocks up
3:51
but like I said we've won a prize on a
3:54
competition so I think I'm going to be
3:57
getting some s blocks uh sent to me so
4:00
I'm looking forward to them coming and
4:03
put up on my allotment on my in my trees
4:06
and on my bird feeders so what else have
4:10
we been up to today well yesterday I
4:13
said to you that I like to spread my
4:16
jobs out over the weekend so that I get
4:18
them all done and stuff like that I
4:19
don't give myself too big of jobs to do
4:23
but I try and get them all completed by
4:25
the end of the weekend now the job that
4:27
I wanted to do today was to cut back all
4:30
the brambles around my fruit trees
4:32
around my rhubarb because my rhubarb is
4:34
my Prime spot because my mom makes me
4:36
crumbles all the way through the year
4:38
which is absolutely
4:40
fantastic and I usually chop these back
4:43
once a year and they'll usually stay
4:45
back for about a year and then I do them
4:47
again at the end of each year so I
4:50
thought I'll get started on that today
4:51
and get it all cleared and finish it off
4:53
tomorrow well I got it all done I
4:56
couldn't believe it I worked by socks
4:57
off today and I've my myself some points
5:00
I cleared it all in one
5:02
day I must have had the uh momentum to
5:06
get going today and get get gardening
5:09
but um yeah I was saying that I'd
5:11
probably end up with loads of phones in
5:13
me and scratch to death but I actually
5:15
did all right I just made sure I kept
5:18
chopping the brambles into small pieces
5:20
popping them in my tub to uh throw
5:23
away and I got scratched all the gloves
5:26
were really thick so the phones didn't
5:29
go through which were absolutely
5:30
fantastic so I'm not in any pain
5:33
whatsoever from cutting all the brambles
5:36
back so they're all chopped back I've
5:37
cleared back uh any old fruit what had
5:40
fallen on the floor cleared some of the
5:42
leaves up tided it all up those there's
5:45
still a lot of leaves left to drop off
5:47
uh my fruit trees so we'll still be
5:49
clearing that up in a few more weeks
5:51
time but the bulk of it is all done all
5:54
the Bram balls cleared which was going
5:55
to be a massive job so I've ticked that
5:58
off so I need to find another job to do
6:00
tomorrow down at the alotment so
6:02
tomorrow I think I'm just going to be
6:04
concentrating on Tiding my paths up and
6:07
clearing a bit more of the top of my
6:09
allotment so hopefully we find some jobs
6:12
to do down there I'm sure we'll find
6:13
plenty I don't want to exactly start
6:15
doing stuff in my shed yet because I
6:18
don't usually do stuff in my shed or my
6:20
poly tunnel unless it's raining because
6:23
it's a waste of
6:24
time being in the shed when it's
6:26
actually nice outside I feel like I need
6:29
to do all the outside jobs while it's
6:31
decent and then doing the shed when it's
6:34
not very nice when it's chucking it down
6:36
or when it's awful but yeah we're moving
6:40
fast our plot is going to look
6:42
absolutely fantastic next year fingers
6:45
cross that is the plan anyway but I'm
6:48
going to have to try and make it a bit
6:49
more
6:52
um less maintenance next year because
6:55
like I say I'm only down there twice a
6:57
week now but uh I need to make sure that
7:01
it can look after itself when I'm not at
7:03
the allotment and fingers crossed we can
7:06
work out a plan for that and hopefully
7:09
get things still growing while I'm at
7:12
work and staying alive but we'll look
7:15
into all that but hopefully we'll be
7:18
getting lots of stuff done so yeah I'm
7:21
going to be back down at the allotment
7:22
tomorrow and getting all them paths
7:25
cleared and down the side of my plot and
7:28
hopefully fingers crossed I'll be
7:30
filming a lot more content tomorrow so
7:32
it's done me a favor getting it all done
7:35
today in one go because Sundays I
7:37
usually like to film all my YouTube
7:39
content down there I film my daily real
7:43
questions down there so hopefully I'll
7:46
get all that filmed for you tomorrow so
7:48
I hope you're enjoying all the videos
7:50
because we've been posting videos quite
7:52
regularly now and these podcasts have
7:55
been obviously posting them every day
7:57
and I'm trying to promote this podcast
7:59
as much as possible to get more and more
8:01
people listening to it so if you are a
8:03
new listener please do give me a follow
8:06
and make sure you check out all the
8:07
other episodes and obviously these are
8:10
now going out on YouTube as well so I
8:12
hope that you enjoy listening them to
8:14
them on YouTube if you're listening on
8:16
YouTube
8:17
and we've got a lot of episodes to come
8:21
and I'm going to be film recording quite
8:23
a few episodes this weekend Sav me doing
8:25
them at night when I finished work so
8:28
yeah but tomorrow's episode will
8:30
obviously be talking about everything
8:32
that we've done on Sunday down at the
8:34
allotment and what jobs we manag to do
8:37
and what we have found to do and who
8:39
knows what the weather might be like
8:40
tomorrow it might be snowing it might be
8:42
raining or it might
8:44
be hot and
8:47
sunny I don't think it'll be hot and
8:49
sunny somehow but
8:51
yeah but I'm always on the look out for
8:54
new ideas for my podcast and videos so
8:57
if anybody has any things that they'd
8:59
like me to cover please do send me a
9:01
message and I'll try and cover it in a
9:03
podcast or a
9:06
video but I think that's everything that
9:09
we're going to be talking about today uh
9:11
I'm just trying I've been looking up as
9:13
well when to start my Peppers off
9:16
because I want to try and grow quite a
9:17
few peppers next year and I think last
9:20
year I planted them around April May
9:22
time and they weren't quite ready in
9:24
time so I'm going to be starting off uh
9:27
I've been looking at when's best to
9:28
start them off flight whether I'd start
9:30
them off in January or February time
9:33
that'll be when I get them started but
9:35
I'm going to look into my methods of
9:37
growing them because uh I follow another
9:39
person online and they start all their
9:42
seeds off in tissue paper rather than in
9:46
compost and once they've germinated then
9:49
they'll plant them into compost because
9:52
they'll know if they've germinated or
9:54
not which is a good idea and obviously
9:57
uh you can put into final pot before uh
10:02
you don't have to repot them out of the
10:04
seed trayers and stuff like that once
10:05
they start to grow you can just put them
10:07
straight into the pots that they're
10:08
going to grow into so yeah I might look
10:11
at different methods like that because
10:13
compost is getting expensive now I don't
10:15
know if you've seen prices of compost so
10:18
the more I can save money the better
10:21
will it but let me know in the comments
10:23
if you start your seeds off on tissue
10:25
paper it's a case of just keeping them
10:27
damp and getting them to germinate that
10:29
way uh I'll probably not be able to do
10:32
the really small seeds like that but the
10:34
ones like cett and pumpkins and melons
10:38
and peppers possibly try that way and
10:42
we'll see how well they get on I always
10:44
love to do experiments when I'm
10:46
gardening trying different ways
10:48
different methods seeing what works
10:50
seeing what doesn't work and that's the
10:51
whole fun about gardening trying
10:53
different experiments and seeing what
10:56
works so I hope that you come back to 's
10:59
podcast and listen to it like I said
11:02
tomorrow we're going to be talking about
11:04
everything that we've done on the
11:05
allotment today and what we've got up to
11:09
so make sure you stay tuned for that
11:11
stay tuned for my weekly tour video as
11:14
well on YouTube I always post a weekly
11:16
tour video now uh rather than monthly I
11:19
do it on a weekly basis so people can
11:21
follow along with me seeing what I've
11:23
been getting up to down at the plot and
11:25
staying up to date with it alls I don't
11:27
go live down there anymore I just like
11:28
film in the video so make sure you stay
11:31
tuned for the weekly tour video If
11:33
you're not following us on YouTube do
11:35
give us a follow and then you'll be able
11:37
