a lotment rules and understanding them
0:03
welcome back to Gardening with Ben in
0:05
today's episode we're going to be
0:06
talking about a lotment rules as
0:08
different a lotments have different
0:10
rules that you have to follow and if you
0:13
don't follow the rules you can be kicked
0:14
off the site and they're not really bad
0:18
rules to be honest the rules that are
0:20
set in place just keep everybody on
0:24
track with how well they're getting on
0:26
so we're going to talk about it today
0:29
we've got his own little series where we
0:30
keep posting little videos about
0:32
starting an a lotment and tips and
0:34
advice around getting started so in
0:37
today's episode talking about a lotment
0:40
rules and our a lotment has a few rules
0:44
and sometimes when you take on an
0:46
aotment they'll give you a rule book so
0:48
that you can actually read it and see
0:50
what the rules are around on your a
0:52
lotment site and they're not usually bad
0:55
rules to be honest it's just to keep
0:57
everybody in check with what they're
0:59
doing and some of the rules that's we've
1:01
got on our plot on our a lotment site is
1:03
that you can only have bonfires between
1:06
November and April and that is just
1:09
because obviously it's got neighbors
1:12
nearby and people don't want the washing
1:14
smelling the smoke and stuff like that
1:16
so they say that you can burn between
1:18
November and April which is
1:20
understandable so you tend to save up
1:22
all your rubbish and have a mass bonfire
1:25
during the winter months which is nice
1:27
because I do love a good bonfire down
1:29
here when when it's cold and I I I love
1:32
the smell of smoke to be honest but yeah
1:35
I do love a good bonfire another one of
1:38
the rules is that you can only have six
1:41
chickens on our site uh we didn't used
1:44
to be allowed chickens on our site but
1:46
they've changed it now and you're
1:47
allowed up to six chickens on the site
1:50
and that's just to keep control of it
1:52
and obviously not have too many down
1:54
here because six is ample enough and
1:57
you'll get plenty eggs from them i don't
1:59
have any chickens myself i'd love some
2:01
chickens but it would mean having to
2:03
come down every single day and making
2:06
sure that they're looked after and I
2:07
don't feel I could give that much time
2:09
to doing that another one of the rules
2:13
is like private hedges you can only let
2:15
them grow up to six foot high which
2:17
again is another rule good rule because
2:20
you don't want them getting out of hand
2:22
and they can get massive private hedges
2:25
and obviously you only trim them when
2:28
the birds aren't nesting etc so that's
2:31
another one of the rules and then
2:33
there's certain important rules like you
2:35
can't have carpets on your plot because
2:38
they let out toxins when I first got my
2:40
a lotments out I used to use carpet all
2:42
the time until I read how bad it is
2:44
using carpet to suppress the weeds um
2:48
and then also as well with car tires
2:52
again I used to use them previously but
2:55
again I've read up on it and they leak
2:58
so much toxins into the soil and into
3:00
the plants that they can be harmful so
3:04
don't use car tires on your plot they
3:06
look nice when you're growing certain
3:08
things in them and they look good for
3:10
growing potatoes in but don't use them
3:12
there's other methods of growing stuff
3:14
in raised planters so stick to that rule
3:18
as well but yeah have a look through the
3:20
lotment handbook that you will probably
3:22
get given and it will explain all the
3:24
rules around it and to keep your plot
3:27
healthy and tidy and you don't want much
3:31
rubbish on your site as well so I hope
3:33
you found that useful and if you got any
3:36
questions please do leave a comment in
3:39
the bottom and I'll try and answer it
3:41
and stay tuned for lots more of these
3:43
videos so until next time everyone
3:45
remember keep smiling keep shining and
3:48
keep gardening with bed everyone
