hey everyone and welcome to Gardening
0:04
with Ben well it's now the end of May
0:09
and have we had a successful month or
0:12
have we had a failure well I've got to
0:15
say it's been a tough month this month
0:18
has May because we've had no rain
0:20
literally no rain most of May it's been
0:23
so dry and barren uh having to keep
0:28
things watered having to try and plant
0:31
in this weather and keep things alive so
0:33
that it takes in the ground and gets
0:35
growing thankfully we got some rain this
0:38
week we've had a lot of rain the last
0:40
few days down where I am so everything
0:42
is starting to grow well and take in the
0:45
soil now so hopefully things will get
0:48
growing
0:49
and hopefully get a good produce from
0:53
down here at the aotment but overall
0:56
I've got to say this month has been
0:58
pretty successful i don't get as many
1:00
days down here now on the a lotment i
1:02
only get a couple of days a month a week
1:04
down here so it's a case of trying to
1:06
get everything planted as fast as
1:08
possible and get all the beds weeded to
1:11
get them in the ground but we've got in
1:14
peas we've got in sweet corn we've got
1:16
broccoli in we've got cauliflower in
1:19
we've got potatoes in we've got uh
1:23
pumpkins in we've
1:25
got radish spring onions sweet corn
1:30
lettuce we have got lots of things in
1:33
the ground we've still got loads more
1:35
things to get in uh I I'll tell you that
1:38
for sure and I've got loads more seeds
1:40
to get started but we'll be talking
1:42
about that in our June episode of what
1:43
we're going to be talk planting this
1:46
next month but yeah we've got loads of
1:48
things in the ground and as tomatoes are
1:51
doing well we've got tomatoes in our
1:53
poly tunnel this year usually I plant
1:55
them outdoors but we've planted some
1:57
indoors this year because I've got beef
1:59
steak ones and they need a lot more
2:00
hotter weather to get them to ripen
2:04
better so we've planted all those beef
2:05
steak ones in the poly tunnel we've also
2:08
potted up some melon plants hopefully
2:11
try and get some melons growing this
2:12
year in the poly tunnel we've also got
2:15
some pepper plants now my pepper plants
2:17
I started them off in January because
2:19
last year they were only just fruiting
2:22
when it were getting towards the end of
2:23
the year so they didn't do very well but
2:25
we planted them in January this year and
2:27
they're growing really well they've got
2:29
flowers on them so hopefully we'll get
2:31
some fruit growing on our pepper plants
2:34
this year and get a great collection now
2:37
it's also coming to the time of
2:39
strawberry picking a lot of you may be
2:41
picking them already as I've seen loads
2:43
of people picking them but they're down
2:45
south so they tend to ripen a bit before
2:48
when they do up north my dad's just
2:50
started picking his and a few of mine
2:52
are starting to turn red we have picked
2:54
our first red ones today some of them
2:58
need to ripen a little bit more but I'm
3:00
picking them because we have pesky
3:02
squirrels down here and they tend to
3:05
pinch them so do the birds and the wood
3:08
lice love them as well and they bite
3:10
into them once they're ripened so I'm
3:12
trying to get them before anything
3:14
starts to attack them and we can
3:17
actually enjoy them this year cuz I
3:18
didn't get many at all last year down
3:21
here on the a lotment so I'm hoping to
3:22
get a better produce one now one thing
3:25
that is doing really well is my Logan
3:27
berry i shared that in another video
3:30
previously and that has got so much
3:33
fruit coming on it this year we're going
3:35
to be inundated with Logan berries this
3:37
year they're a bit like raspberry but
3:39
they're bigger and the plant is
3:41
thornless as well so you don't get
3:43
prickled to death off it and you can
3:44
train it along the side of your plot as
3:47
it grows really really long and get so
3:51
much produce on it and every year that
3:54
it's in it'll grow bigger and bigger and
3:56
you'll get more and more produce on it
3:58
and Logan berries are good for jam
4:00
they're good with ice cream good with
4:01
custard absolutely delicious so if
4:04
you're wanting to try a fruit which is
4:06
very productive Loganberry go and look
4:09
it up and get some planted and it's easy
4:11
to take cutings from it as well all you
4:13
do is stick the end in some soil let it
4:15
root and then snip it off and then
4:17
you've got yourself another plant it's
4:20
as easy as that we've also got
4:22
absolutely hundreds of plums growing
4:25
we've got loads of cooking apples this
4:26
year we've got loads of eating apples i
4:28
didn't prune my fruit trees this year i
4:30
left them we gave them a big prune the
4:34
other year and I didn't get much fruit
4:36
on them last year so I've left them this
4:38
year to do what they want because
4:40
sometimes when you prune a fruit tree it
4:42
stresses it and you won't get as much
4:44
fruit on it so I've left it so hopefully
4:46
we'll get a good crop this year and I'll
4:48
prune them this year for next year so
4:50
we'll probably not get as much produce
4:52
next year but I'm looking forward to a
4:55
good productive year this year a good
4:57
produce down here at the aotment uh I
4:59
don't know if I'll get as many
5:00
vegetables but we'll see but fruitwise
5:03
we're going to get an absolute cracking
5:05
amount so has May been successful I
5:08
would say so we've had some gorgeous
5:10
weather to get the plants growing then
5:12
we've had the rain to help them settle
5:14
in and get established and overall May
5:17
has definitely been a very good month to
5:20
have so roll on June and hopefully get
5:23
some great produce so I'll speak to you
5:26
all later remember keep smiling keep
5:28
shining and keep gardening with Ben
5:30
everyone
