0:39
gardening
0:42
Journey hey everyone and welcome back to
0:46
gardening with Ben for another brand new
0:49
episode for you to listen to on this
0:51
Sunday morning when it's meant to be
0:54
actually starting to warm up today
0:55
fingers crossed hopefully all that snow
0:58
and ice will melt away because I've been
1:00
stuck in my flat all week and I need to
1:02
get out so I'm hopefully going to go out
1:05
today and hopefully go down to the
1:07
allotment I'm not going to do any work
1:09
down there but uh I'm just going to make
1:11
sure that my bird feeders are filled up
1:14
because they'll have eaten all the bird
1:16
feed that I put out last weekend so
1:18
hopefully we can fill those bird feeders
1:20
up and get them eating again like I said
1:22
in my previous episode I'm going to
1:24
invest in some squirrel prooof bird
1:25
feeders so they're like10 each but hope
1:29
hopefully we'll be able to get some of
1:31
those and hopefully stop them eating all
1:34
the seed not that I don't mind them
1:35
eating it but when they eat it all it
1:38
costs a lot of money to keep filling
1:39
them up every single day so we need to
1:43
get some of those on order hopefully in
1:46
the next few weeks so yeah hopefully I'm
1:49
down on the allotment today hopefully
1:51
filling those bird feeders up and
1:52
obviously feeding the cat as well my
1:55
dad's been feeding that every day for
1:56
those that wondering as we've got an
1:59
allotment cat down there and it pops
2:01
into my shed and yeah we give it some
2:03
food every single day he's even going
2:05
down even when it's been snowing and bad
2:08
weather so good on him to keep feeding
2:11
that cat obviously there's plenty
2:13
of food around for it with the mice and
2:15
the birds and stuff like that we've seen
2:17
a few pigeon feathers around so
2:20
obviously it's keeping uh plenty of food
2:24
and keeping
2:25
healthy so yeah what have we been up to
2:29
well in yesterday's episode I going to
2:31
tell you I said I going to tell you all
2:33
about what I've got growing at home at
2:36
the moment so the things that I've got
2:38
growing at home are my onions my Peppers
2:43
my
2:45
chilies and some orber jeene that's what
2:49
we've got growing at the moment at home
2:52
and my onions are all starting to pop
2:54
through my peppers and my chilies have
2:56
not started sprouting yet like I said is
2:59
that peppers and chilies need a
3:01
temperature of about 25 degrees to
3:04
germinate which is very hot it's h a
3:07
very hot germination rate and obviously
3:10
you can usually start them off in your
3:12
allotment in like April time but last
3:14
year when I saw them they were only just
3:17
fru in around September time so they
3:21
were very behind so we're starting them
3:23
off really early to try and get ahead of
3:26
the game and hopefully get some decent
3:28
Peppers off the this year because I want
3:30
to try and give them a good grow go in
3:33
growing I'm also going to grow some
3:35
melons this year so I'm looking forward
3:36
to Growing them and sharing with you how
3:39
well we get on with the melon growing
3:41
I'm going to be growing loads of
3:42
different stuff to say that I'm only
3:43
going to be down there two days a week
3:46
this
3:47
year I'm going to try and put a lot of
3:50
effort in it show you how well and how
3:52
accomplished you can actually be we've
3:55
going to the allotment for two days a
3:56
week obviously all my allotments cleared
3:58
and tided and don't need to do any work
4:00
on it so it's case of just growing and
4:02
keeping on top of things so my allotment
4:05
is pretty sorted I've had it for about
4:07
20 years now so we're pretty on top of
4:10
it obviously we've got maintenance work
4:12
and bits and Bobs to do but we are on
4:15
top of getting it all tidied and ready
4:18
so yeah I'm excited about that and we're
4:22
not going to be starting any other seeds
4:23
off at the moment we won't be starting
4:25
out over seeds off till end of March
4:27
Time beginning of April time some
4:29
sometimes you get like a week's Heat
4:31
Wave which you have to watch out for
4:33
because when it comes that's when I
4:34
start thrwing all my
4:36
seat to get them all growing and
4:39
germinated cuz I haven't got a heated
4:40
Greenhouse or anything like that so I
4:42
have to wait for the heat uh heat wave
4:44
to come and get them started but I'm
4:47
also going to try and grow a few Citrus
4:50
plants at home as that's one thing I
4:53
want to give another try I've done it
4:54
before but I forgot to water it before
4:57
and I ended up killing it off so I've
4:59
got some grapefruit seeds the other week
5:03
uh from out of a grapefruit so I've
5:04
saved them so I'm going to try and grow
5:06
some grapefruit I don't think we'll be
5:08
getting any grapefruit on them and I
5:10
also got some satsumas as well so I'm
5:13
going to try and grow some of those and
5:15
see how well we get on you never know if
5:18
we have a massive Heat Wave we might get
5:20
some on them but I I really do doubt it
5:23
and I'm going to try and grow some lemon
5:25
again I've grown lemon uh plants before
5:28
like I said but forgot to water them so
5:30
they
5:32
died but I've got a secret way of
5:34
getting the seeds to germinate and grow
5:38
so I'll be sharing that with you all
5:40
when we get them all started and
5:42
hopefully get them germinated hopefully
5:44
it works and I'm not proven wrong but
5:47
the last time I germinated my lemon
5:49
seeds I managed to get them to germinate
5:52
within a fortnite so hopefully we can
5:54
work do that trick on the grapefruit and
5:57
on the satsumas as well and get them
5:59
growing
6:00
so yeah I'm looking forward to doing
6:01
that and I just want to try a loads of
6:04
different things this year and I put a
6:06
post out on Facebook the other day
6:08
saying about obviously it's cold weather
6:10
it's uh frozen over and everything like
6:13
that but now is a perfect time to be
6:15
planning and writing down all the seeds
6:18
that you want to grow this year and
6:20
making a plan of your allotment and
6:21
garden and showing what you want to grow
6:23
where and how you're going to grow it or
6:24
if you're going to draw any improvements
6:26
on it what you want to do and bits like
6:29
that and I've got so many sweet peas
6:31
growing in my shed in my uh alotment
6:34
hopefully they're still alive hopefully
6:36
the cold weather's not killed them off
6:38
hopefully they're still going to grow
6:40
but we'll see we'll see fingers crossed
6:41
they will uh knowing my look when I go
6:44
down to the alotment tomorrow they'll
6:45
all be
6:46
dead but like I always say I'm an open
6:49
and honest Gardener I tell you how it is
6:52
and how well I'm growing I'm not one of
6:54
these uh gardeners that just show you
6:56
all the good things I show you all the
6:57
bad things as well because then it uh
7:01
makes it more relatable to everybody
7:03
because people think well they always
7:05
seem to manage to get them to grow well
7:06
no I
7:08
don't but yeah I love being open and
7:11
honest with
7:12
everybody so we'll be trying lots of
7:15
different things this year we still got
7:17
to make our seed list uh I've got a load
7:19
of things in my Amazon uh shopping cart
7:22
of what I want to buy uh in my shopping
7:25
cart I've been looking at flower seeds
7:27
at the moment uh cuz I want to try load
7:29
different flowers a lot of my vegetable
7:31
seeds I tend to get them from uh wil
7:34
Wilkers which is obviously now in the
7:36
range so if you've got a range near you
7:39
have a look at their wilker seeds
7:40
because they're usually pretty cheap and
7:42
they usually germinate pretty well I
7:44
usually have good success with them uh
7:47
so I'll be doing all my vegetable seeds
7:50
from there but my flower seeds I like to
7:52
look all different unusual vegetables
7:54
which we probably won't see in a garden
7:56
center uh I tend to get them off Amazon
7:58
or from a seed supplier and at the
8:01
moment in my Amazon shopping cart I've
8:03
got a load more even though I've got
8:06
loads of sweet peas growing I've got a
8:08
load more different varieties of sweet
8:10
peas in my shopping cart I've literally
8:13
gone through every different variety and
8:14
put them in my shopping cart CU I want
8:16
to try as many different varieties of
8:18
sweet peas as possible this year I've
8:21
also done the same for sunflowers I've
8:22
got different varieties of sunflowers
8:24
and different varieties of geraniums as
8:27
well uh did have poppies in my shopping
8:30
cart but I've ordered all them we've got
8:32
all them we've got loads of different
8:34
varieties of poppies so I'm trying lots
8:36
and lots of different varieties of stuff
8:38
this year so it'll be exciting to see so
8:41
fingers crossed it they all grew and we
8:44
hopefully get some good displays for you
8:46
all some good pictures because if not
8:48
it'll be a big waste of
8:50
money but I don't care about losing out
8:52
on money on my allotment and garden it's
8:55
just about being outside enjoying it
8:57
learning new things giving it try and if
9:00
it fails it fails but yeah I absolutely
9:03
love being outside in the garden and
9:05
that's a thing I've
9:06
missed uh this weekend is not being out
9:09
in the garden and being able to do stuff
9:11
but I've been concentrating on other
9:13
stuff I've got these podcasts back I've
9:15
been sharing posts on my Facebook page
9:18
uh about what to plan and what jobs need
9:20
doing and stuff like that so I'm been
9:22
pushing out my social media instead and
9:25
keeping everyone
9:26
updated so if you don't follow me on my
9:28
social media channels give me a follow
9:31
on Instagram and Facebook just search
9:33

9:35
all my posts and updates on there so
9:38
yeah that is hopefully what we're going
9:41
to be getting up to today on Sunday
9:43
obviously I've pre-recorded this episode
9:45
before I've gone down to my allotment
9:47
and hopefully we're going to have be
9:49
able to get onto the plot if not I'll
9:51
park away from the allotment and walk
9:53
down to the plot because I do want to
9:56
get down there and I do want to have a
9:58
little look around and get some nice
10:01
wintry pictures as well that would be
10:03
nice so yeah hopefully I'll get down to
10:06
the allotment and hopefully get some
10:07
stuff
10:08
done so until next time everyone
10:12
remember keep smiling keep shining and
