0:36

0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hello everyone and welcome back
0:48
to gardening with Ben we're your host
0:51
gardening with Ben and yeah it's
0:54
Saturday the weekend is here and to be
0:57
honest it wasn't as hot today
1:00
this morning as it was yesterday it was
1:03
absolutely roasting yesterday but today
1:05
I were pretty cool I didn't have my
1:08
t-shirt off which is some something of a
1:11
good
1:12
sight but yeah it's being quite a cool
1:16
day today but I did have to do a lot of
1:19
watering today as
1:22
obviously it was a hot day yesterday so
1:24
we needed to get all the plants watered
1:26
and get them soaked and
1:30
the main things that added water was my
1:32
cucumbers that I planted yesterday and I
1:35
going around checking them all making
1:37
sure no slugs were going for them or
1:39
eating them or starting to destroy them
1:42
and touch wood they are pretty safe at
1:45
the moment and I'm going to be keeping
1:48
my eyes peeled on them because I don't
1:50
want the Slugs to get them we're going
1:52
to try growing them outside for the
1:53
first time ever and hopefully we'll get
1:57
some good crops so it's a bit of a trial
1:59
an error this year on my cucumbers
2:01
outside I've got some growing in inside
2:04
so we'll definitely get some cucumbers
2:06
but we're going to try some outside this
2:08
year so that we can see how well they do
2:12
whether it's worth off growing them
2:13
outside or growing them indoors let me
2:16
know if you have ever grown cucumbers
2:18
Outdoors before Market more variety is
2:20
the variety that I'm growing so give me
2:23
a message and let me know if you grow
2:25
any
2:26
Outdoors so what else have we been up to
2:29
today well I did actually have pretty
2:32
much a chilled day down at the alotment
2:35
today I didn't do an awful lot as to be
2:39
honest I started the gym the other day
2:43
and it's destroyed me I did some like
2:46
tricep
2:48
exercises and my I couldn't move my arms
2:52
this morning they absolutely killed
2:54
bearing in mind i' not been for two days
2:56
they absolutely killed I ended up having
2:58
some paracetamol just to get rid of some
3:00
of the pain but as I'm recording this it
3:03
seems okay at the moment so hopefully
3:06
I'll be back to normal and I'll be back
3:08
at the gym again hopefully it won't put
3:09
me off but we've now got an Apple Watch
3:12
as well so that we can keep track of all
3:14
my exercise and try and encourage me to
3:17
get fit again and obviously like I said
3:19
gardening does keep you fit keeps you
3:21
going keeps you motivated keeps you
3:23
moving around and hopefully I will see
3:27
the difference and progress and
3:29
hopefully now summer's coming we'll be
3:32
having all the healthy food as well
3:34
picked from his alotment now I was
3:36
looking today and my loganberries are
3:39
getting ready they're starting to turn
3:40
ripe now if you've never tried Logan
3:43
berries before loganberries are a longer
3:47
version of a raspberry and they're a bit
3:49
more hairier than a raspberry but they
3:52
are absolutely delicious I always
3:54
remember as a kid my mom used to make
3:55
Loganberry Jam because we had a big
3:58
Loganberry bush in the garden
4:00
and the best thing about loganberries is
4:02
there's no PHS on the canes they're
4:05
forless and you can they just go mad go
4:09
wild you'll get absolutely loads and
4:12
loads of fruit on it so fingers crossed
4:15
over the next few years we have a lot of
4:17
lot of loganberries growing and some
4:20
delicious fruit because you can never
4:21
have enough fruit the fruit that I grow
4:24
from my allotment pays for the allotment
4:26
in itself like my allotment a year is
4:28
about £120 a year which to some of you
4:32
it'll sound a lot but that does include
4:34
the water and it is quite a big plot and
4:38
I'll I'll easily pay £20 for having a
4:41
piece of land that I can go and relax on
4:43
and enjoy the open space on and grow my
4:46
own vegetables on it's not about me
4:48
saving money and growing my own veggie
4:49
it's about my mental health and getting
4:51
outside and being out in the fresh air
4:54
and enjoying it and being back at nature
4:59
but yeah yeah the Logan bers are getting
5:01
ready we've also been busy planting as
5:04
well today if you remember yesterday we
5:07
talked about how we planted all our peas
5:08
out yesterday we planted all our
5:12
cucumbers out yesterday we planted our
5:14
sweet corn the other day so we planted
5:18
some more beetroot today some of my
5:21
beetroot that I had growing has been
5:23
getting eaten and destroyed so we've got
5:25
a lot more beetroot pled today and I've
5:28
planted these all in the gaps between
5:30
all the plants just to fill the spaces
5:33
up because my allotment is quite limited
5:35
for light there's some trees at the top
5:37
of my plot so it doesn't get much light
5:38
at the top so I'm limited for space so I
5:41
need to use every bit of space that I
5:44
can and obviously putting those beetroot
5:47
in the middle of the plants and stuff
5:49
like that it'll stop the weeds from
5:51
growing because hopefully the leaves
5:52
will fill out and they'll stop anything
5:55
else from growing so hopefully we'll get
5:58
a lot of beetroot growing and yeah we've
6:00
got a lettuce R we've had some lettuce
6:03
off absolutely delicious crispy head on
6:07
it uh it's an iceberg variety that I
6:10
grow I've always had good luck with
6:12
growing Iceberg lettuces I've never had
6:15
any issue
6:17
whatsoever I just make sure they're
6:19
netted over to start off with to stop
6:21
the pigeons eating them and attacking
6:24
them but I've never had any issues
6:26
growing Iceberg lers I always have a
6:29
good success with them so we've got some
6:31
more of them started off growing so
6:33
hopefully we'll be planting some of
6:35
those out later so that we get a second
6:37
crop throughout the year and get more
6:40
growing as we come on so we're back at
6:43
work tomorrow for the next four days so
6:45
we're not going to be down at the
6:46
allotment but hopefully we're going to
6:47
record plenty of episodes for you to
6:49
keep you going and keep it all ticking
6:52
over for you because I'm enjoying doing
6:54
all these podcast episodes at the moment
6:56
we're getting quite a lot out and the
6:58
views
7:00
of the podcast is brilliant there's
7:02
loads of people listening every single
7:03
day to them so I appreciate every one of
7:06
you that does listen so what's next
7:09
week's plan when we're back down at the
7:11
alotment hopefully we're going to be
7:13
picking those loganberries we'll be
7:14
picking some strawberries I did notice
7:17
as well my blueberries are starting to
7:19
ripen so we're going to be having some
7:21
blueberries off soon so they'll be
7:23
delicious to have and enjoy down at the
7:27
allotment and obviously like I said I've
7:30
got a meal plan at the moment what I'm
7:32
having and part of it is to have some
7:34
Greek yogurt at night with some fruit of
7:36
my choic in so obviously I'll be using
7:39
the Logan berries I'll be using the
7:40
blueberries strawberries everything that
7:43
is ready around this time of year I'll
7:45
be popping into that Greek yogurt at
7:49
night so we got lots going off and
7:53
hopefully the peas will start to swell
7:55
up soon we need some more rain to come
7:57
that's what we need yes it is Sunshine
8:00
but we do need some rain and we need it
8:02
to water them and make them swell uh I'm
8:05
always one of these that I don't mind if
8:06
it's boiling hot sunny during the
8:08
daytime but just Chuck it down at night
8:10
please just water my allotment it needs
8:13
it because there's only so much watering
8:16
that you can do down at the
8:18
alotment I don't know if you like me but
8:20
I absolutely hate watering it's not
8:23
something that I enjoy doing
8:25
whatsoever so hopefully we do get some
8:28
main soon but I don't think it's likely
8:30
it's forecast to stay warm pretty much
8:33
all week I think this is going to be
8:34
like a little heat wave in a sense even
8:37
though it's like 21 22 degrees I call it
8:40
a heat wave because it's going to be
8:42
nice and warm we're not used to this
8:44
where are we in England so any Sunshine
8:47
is nice and hopefully it'll get things
8:49
growing on pretty well and I should be
8:51
getting around to picking
8:54
my potatoes soon they should be starting
8:56
to get ready I planted them like on Good
9:00
Friday so they should be ready but I
9:04
usually pick them when they start to die
9:07
back when the plants start to die off
9:08
and go yellow that's when I usually know
9:11
that they're ready to harvest and
9:12
they're still green and healthy they've
9:14
not had no flowers on them yet so I'm
9:17
leaving them as they are and just keep
9:20
watering them and keep them growing
9:22
because hopefully then I'll have lots
9:23
and lots of potatoes in there but it's
9:26
one of those old little magic tricks is
9:27
it like you don't know what's in there
9:29
till you find out it's like a surprise
9:33
whereas all other vegetables what you're
9:34
grow you can actually see what it looks
9:36
like with potatoes you've got no chance
9:38
of knowing what they look like until you
9:40
empty them so you don't want to empty
9:42
them too early and not be ready so it's
9:46
case of waiting it out and seeing what
9:48
we get from our potato crop this year
9:51
and I'm hoping we've got a decent crop
9:54
as I do like homegrown potatoes they're
9:57
absolutely delicious they're gorgeous
9:59
they just melt in your mouth and
10:02
absolutely
10:04
phenomenal so I think that's everything
10:07
that we've been up to down at the
10:09
allotment today I've chopped back my
10:10
aliums as well they've died off now so
10:13
we've Chopped all them back cleared them
10:14
out of the way
10:16
and we've got some nice flowers growing
10:19
down there at the moment I've got some
10:21
fabulous fuches what are coming out at
10:23
the moment they're absolutely gorgeous
10:25
and obviously these your first year
10:27
plants so they're not that big plants at
10:28
the moment
10:30
so hopefully next year they'll look even
10:32
better and even bigger and the displays
10:35
will start to look absolutely
10:38
beautiful so that has been our podcast
