0:00
hey everyone and welcome to Gardening
0:03
with Ben we're going to talk about the
0:05
five biggest lessons that I've learned
0:08
this month and yeah we have got a lot of
0:12
lessons that we always learning you're
0:14
always learning new things down at the a
0:17
lotment and there's always things to
0:19
learn every single day and it's non-stop
0:22
learning gardening you learn from your
0:24
mistakes and you try and improve from
0:26
them so what mistakes have we learned
0:29
from so we have learned
0:32
from not spending enough time down at
0:35
the a lotment sometimes I come down and
0:38
I don't do much which is good in a sense
0:41
because you can just sit back and relax
0:43
but your time is precious down at the a
0:46
lotment there's always lots to be done
0:48
and if you don't do much things can get
0:52
too much and you can't keep on top of it
0:55
and the weeds do grow back really really
1:03
and if if I could change it I'd spend
1:06
more time down at the plot as usually I
1:08
get down here about half 9 and say to
1:11
about 1 but yeah adding an extra hour in
1:14
possibly you can get better rewards from
1:17
it the second biggest mistake is not
1:20
netting things you'd have thought I'd
1:21
have learned by now but sometimes I
1:24
forget to net things and I'll come down
1:26
the next day and the pigeons have ate
1:30
the especially brassacas they will
1:33
devour them brussels sprouts broccoli
1:36
cabbage cauliflower if you don't net
1:39
them the pigeons will eat them and
1:42
they'll absolutely love them to bits so
1:46
make sure you net everything it doesn't
1:48
cost much to buy the netting and it's
1:51
probably cheaper off buying the netting
1:52
than replacing the plants so if I were
1:55
to do anything different I would net
1:57
them straight away as soon as I've done
1:58
them the next thing is to be more
2:04
as you know May is coming you know it's
2:07
time for planting out but sometimes
2:09
you're not prepared to get everything
2:11
planted out in time and sometimes you
2:14
end up struggling to keep on top of it
2:17
to get things planted out and get it all
2:20
sorted and ready and the later you plant
2:23
things out sometimes you won't get a
2:25
great produce from it and if you don't
2:28
plant it out fast enough the plants may
2:34
and die and you'll end up losing the
2:37
plants so be prepared for the month work
2:40
out when you're going to come down
2:41
obviously you've got to have the nice
2:44
weather and be prepared for putting in
2:47
the graft putting in the hard work and
2:51
getting it all planted out in
2:54
time the next up is the heat not being
2:58
prepared for the heat as it's been a hot
3:02
month this month it we've had we
3:04
probably had summer and it's probably
3:06
got been and gone now we'll probably not
3:08
get no more hot weather but being
3:11
prepared and spending that time in
3:13
coming down and watering it all and I
3:16
absolutely hate watering i really do but
3:18
without the plants being watered they
3:20
won't grow and you won't get a great
3:23
produce from them so putting in that
3:25
hour every couple of days to come down
3:27
and water to get the rewards from it and
3:31
get some great produce from
3:33
it next up is weeding now having a pot
3:38
for 20 years I should really know this
3:40
but it only takes 5 minutes to go around
3:43
with a hoe and weed in between your
3:46
vegetables and keep on top of the weeds
3:50
and look after in between the plants the
3:52
weeds take all the nutrition from the
3:54
fruit and from the vegetables if you
3:56
don't keep on top of the weeds your
3:58
plants won't produce as much so keeping
4:01
on top of those produce and getting the
4:05
results that you want is all down to you
4:07
if you if you are not putting in the
4:09
effort you won't get the rewards so the
4:12
main key thing is spend 5 minutes every
4:17
time you're down here just going around
4:18
with your hoe weeding it all it keeps
4:20
the ground broken up so that the rain
4:23
water gets in to water them well and it
4:26
will keep the weeds down it won't get
4:27
rid of the roots it probably chops the
4:29
roots up and creates more weeds but you
4:31
will keep on top of it and you can
4:33
obviously go around another day and get
4:35
the roots out when you've got more time
4:37
down here so spend 5 10 minutes going
4:40
around with a hoe and hoing in between
4:42
your plants so yeah those are the
4:45
probably the key things that I've
4:46
learned from May will I learn from it
4:48
probably not i'll probably do another
4:51
later but yeah those are the key things
4:54
that I've taken away from this month so
4:56
if you've enjoyed this drop us a follow
4:58
to stay up to date with everything down
4:59
here at the a lotment until next time
5:01
everyone remember keep smiling keep
5:03
shining and keep gardening with Ben
