The growing season is really getting underway now, and things are starting to change quickly across the allotment. In this update, you’ll see how everything is developing and what’s been happening since the last visit.
These weekly updates are all about showing the real journey — from planting through to harvest — and giving you inspiration for your own growing space.

Happy Easter everybody and welcome to
0:03
our weekly update form down at the
0:05
aotment. Well, I'm happy to say my a
0:08
lotment has survived Storm Dave. Wow, it
0:12
was a bit mental last night with the
0:14
wind and the poly tunnel is still intact
0:17
thankfully. It's always good to keep on
0:20
top of those jobs. As soon as you notice
0:22
a split coming on them, make sure you
0:24
tape it up and make sure that you keep
0:26
it well maintained or just the slightest
0:29
bit of wind can take it and destroy it.
0:31
So, thankfully it's survived another
0:34
storm and another hopefully another year
0:37
it's going to last. So, what have we
0:39
been up to this week down at the a
0:42
lotment? Well, we've got a lot done as
0:44
we're now in April. So, we started
0:46
sewing all our sunflowers, our runna
0:49
beans, our French beans, the sweet corn.
0:53
So, yeah, we started getting all them in
0:55
because it's now time to start sewing
0:57
them and getting them growing and
0:59
hopefully some delicious sweet corn
1:01
crops down here at the autumn because it
1:03
is my favorite thing to grow. So, we've
1:04
made sure that we planted plenty of
1:06
sweet corn kernels ready for great
1:09
harvest, fingers crossed, this year down
1:11
at the plot.
1:13
We've also been busy with potting up
1:17
some lavender plug plants which I got
1:19
from uh U Garden and these are
1:22
absolutely great. Look at that. So
1:24
hopefully we've got 18 of those. So
1:27
hopefully we're going to have a great
1:29
display of lavender in the years to come
1:31
and it'll be a nice little border for
1:33
down the entrance of my plot and
1:35
hopefully add a lot of fragrance and get
1:38
the bees in here down at the plot. We've
1:41
also planted out a hydrangeanger
1:43
incredible which is a big white ball
1:45
flower and yeah hopefully that'll look
1:48
gorgeous. I planted that near the
1:49
entrance to my plot so that when you
1:51
walk on you can see it and it's amazing
1:53
glory and it's got plenty of sunlight in
1:56
that area as well. So hopefully we get
1:59
some great displays from that. We've
2:02
obviously been keeping an eye on the
2:04
strawberries as strawberries are doing
2:06
really well. We're letting them flower
2:07
now. We're letting them go to flower. Uh
2:09
I taking the flowers off for the first
2:11
few weeks to keep the plants growing
2:14
bigger, but the fl flowers are starting
2:16
to appear on them. So what I'm going to
2:18
start do is I'm going to water them
2:20
weekly with a
2:24
seaweed feed to help the growth and then
2:27
the week after I'll feed them with
2:29
tomato feed for the fruit on them as
2:31
well. So we're going to alternate weeks
2:33
for that. And obviously we've got the
2:35
drip irrigation system working which is
2:38
dripping at the moment because I've just
2:39
changed the settings on it. I've changed
2:42
it. I was having it to water every 24
2:46
hours for 15 minutes and it were keeping
2:48
them nice and moist pretty nice and
2:50
good. But it's going to be hot wheat
2:52
this week. It's going to be about 20°.
2:55
So in the poly tunnel you can add at
2:57
least another 20° on that. So, it could
3:00
get up to 40° in here cuz it's been
3:02
getting to 30 in here when it's been 10°
3:05
outside. So, I've changed it to come on
3:07
at 15 minutes every 12 hours. So, it's
3:11
going to get a water in twice a day uh
3:14
for this week. And we'll see how the
3:16
temperatures proceed from then on. And
3:19
obviously, I've got a big wheel wheeler
3:21
bin full of water. So, then all I have
3:23
to do is fill that up once a week. And
3:26
yeah, it's not even used a quarter of
3:29
it. I've been using it for two weeks.
3:31
So, yeah, it's working really, really
3:33
well. So, if you're looking at an
3:35
irrigation system, get the solar powered
3:37
irrigation drip set. Uh, it's absolutely
3:40
brilliant and it's working a treat. I've
3:42
got another one coming for my tomatoes
3:44
ready for when they're planted as well
3:47
so that we can drip irrigation them
3:49
because I can't get down to the plot
3:51
every day with working. So, hopefully
3:53
it'll keep them alive. We used it last
3:55
year and it worked perfectly. So fingers
3:57
crossed it will work again this year. So
4:00
yeah, we've had a busy week down at the
4:02
plot and uh oh, we've planted his
4:04
potatoes as well. We've got his potatoes
4:06
in as tubs. We've still got some more to
4:08
plant. So I'm either going to put those
4:10
into the ground or find some more tubs
4:12
to put them in because we're running out
4:14
of tubs now. So yeah, we might have to
4:16
end up putting them in the ground. It's
4:18
not my ideal choice because of the wire
4:19
worm and stabbing them when you're
4:21
digging them up. But we don't want to
4:23
waste them. So we need to get them in.
4:25
And that's probably the plan for that.
4:27
So, make sure you stay tuned for my poly
4:30
tunnel tour and show you how well it's
4:32
all getting on in here. It's absolutely
4:34
getting on amazing. So, yeah. Until next
4:36
time, everyone. Remember, keep smiling,
4:38
keep shining, and keep gardening with
4:40
Ben everyone. And I hope you have a
4:42
fantastic Easter.
