Welcome to our poly tunnel diaries where
0:02
we show you what is growing and what is
0:04
not growing in here. As you all know, we
0:07
have done a poly tunnel transformation
0:09
over the winter and we have put raised
0:11
beds in here. We put hanging baskets in
0:13
here with strawberries and yeah, we're
0:15
going to use it to its full potential
0:16
and grow as much as possible. As
0:19
yesterday it got to 30° in here and
0:21
we're only still in March. So, I'm
0:24
hoping for great harvests and great
0:26
produce growing in here. And it'll be
0:28
the first time that I grow throughout
0:30
the winter period and hopefully get some
0:32
crops all year round growing in here,
0:35
which I've never done before. So, it's
0:37
all a learning curve to me. And we want
0:39
to do plenty of successional growing so
0:41
that we're getting harvests all the time
0:43
and throughout the year. So, less of the
0:46
talking and let's have a tour of what's
0:48
growing on. So, these are my Oakland
0:51
strawberry hanging baskets. As you can
0:53
see, they're like planted up and you can
0:54
get them all going around the edge.
0:56
We've got three in the top and we've got
1:00
planter and we've got 14 of those hung
1:03
up. Absolutely loads. So fingers crossed
1:05
we get a lot of strawberries this year
1:07
and I'll tell you a bit more about these
1:09
in our weekly strawberry update. So stay
1:12
tuned for that. So we have got 15 raised
1:17
beds in the poly tunnel altogether.
1:19
Absolutely loads. Loads of compost in
1:21
them. It took a lot to fill them all,
1:23
but we got there. And down the back, I
1:26
planted all my peas. We've planted 800
1:29
peas. We've done them down this side,
1:31
and we've done them down the other side
1:32
of the poly tunnel as well. Now,
1:34
hopefully those will be ready to harvest
1:37
just as I'm planting my tomatoes. So,
1:39
we'll put the tomatoes towards the back
1:41
once they fully grown. And yeah, we'll
1:45
have netting up towards the back of it
1:47
so that they can grow up and cling on.
1:48
And obviously that'll be good for the
1:50
tomatoes as well when we're fastening
1:52
those up. So we've still got stuff to
1:54
plant in front of this one. We have
2:00
pack choy. So we got some pack choy.
2:03
Nothing's sprouting yet. Stuff's been in
2:05
about a week, but it's going to get up
2:06
to about 16 to 19° on Wednesday. So
2:10
hopefully this will speed up
2:12
germination. We've given them a good
2:14
watering today, so hopefully that will
2:16
help them. We've got radishes in this
2:18
one. So hopefully we get some nice
2:21
radishes. Radishes are the fastest
2:23
growing vegetable, so they shouldn't
2:25
take too long to grow.
2:28
In this one, we've got
2:33
more radishes. So, we're going to have a
2:34
lot of radishes. That's the plan. And in
2:38
this one, we have got spinach. So, I'm
2:42
looking forward to that. We might grow
2:44
it pretty small and then just keep
2:46
snipping it off as and when we need it.
2:49
Then we've got all the middle ones which
2:52
we've filled them all up. We've got
2:54
carrots in this one. So I'm looking
2:57
forward to hopefully getting some great
3:02
We've got some spring onions. Absolutely
3:05
loads of spring onions. So that should
3:07
be good. In this one we've got beetroot.
3:14
In this one, we've got lettuce mixed
3:17
leaves as I do like mixed leaf lettuce.
3:28
We've got some normal lettuce,
3:31
so that should be good. In this one,
3:34
we've got iceberg lettuce. I love an
3:36
iceberg lettuce. And like I said, we've
3:38
got peas all the way down the back as
3:40
well. We've still got to plant stuff in
3:42
the front of these three. So, we've got
3:44
that to do. So, yeah, they're coming on.
3:49
We've got a sweet peas growing in us
3:51
Oakland root trainers. They're coming on
3:53
really well. We need to get those
3:57
We've got his potatoes chitting along.
3:59
They look absolutely fantastic and
4:02
getting ready to plant on Good Friday.
4:05
And in here we've got all his onions
4:07
which are growing well as well. It's
4:08
hard to see through the steam, but
4:10
they're all shooting up and looking
4:12
pretty good in there. So we'll be
4:14
planting those at at the end of March.
4:16
We planted them in cell trays so that
4:18
they get strong and give them a head
4:19
start. So that was our poly tunnel
4:22
update. I hope you've enjoyed it and
4:24
give us a follow to stay up to date with
4:26
these poly tunnel updates. We do them
4:28
every week so that you can follow along
4:30
and see what's growing along and join in
4:32
as well. So, hit that follow button.
