The secret to vibrant autumn flowers
0:03
revealed. Welcome to Gardening with Ben.
0:05
Today's video we're going to talk about
0:07
the secret of autumn vibrant flowers in
0:10
your gardens and a lotments. Now, I've
0:12
not got many autumn flowers in my
0:14
garden. I've got a few because I want to
0:16
add some color so that it's not as dull
0:18
over the winter period as I do love to
0:21
see some color down at my lotment.
0:22
Obviously, the first fish of color will
0:25
be in the springtime when all the bulbs
0:26
come up, which I'm an advocate for
0:29
planting spring bulbs. You know that I
0:31
absolutely love planting spring bulbs.
0:33
So, the autumn flowers that I've got at
0:35
the moment are cichlomen and pansies.
0:38
And they add so much nice color to the
0:40
Oh, and I've got some heather as well.
0:42
The heather's looking amazing at the
0:43
moment. So, the secrets are to dead head
0:46
regularly to boost your blooms. If your
0:49
cichlmen are dying back the flowers or
0:51
the pansies, make sure you go around on
0:54
a regular basis. Take off those dead
0:56
flowers and that will encourage more
0:58
blooms to come on your flowers
1:00
throughout the autumn period. Feed them
1:02
with a high potach fertilizer. If you're
1:05
wanting extra big plants, nice colors.
1:08
Make sure you feed them on a regular
1:09
basis every couple of weeks so that they
1:12
keep blooming all the way through autumn
1:14
and winter and produce you some great
1:16
flowers.
1:18
Keep watering. Autumn can still be dry.
1:21
It's not being dry at the moment, but if
1:24
it's a dry period, make sure you keep
1:26
them watered and keep them growing
1:28
throughout the autumn period, especially
1:30
when it does get really dry. You don't
1:32
want them drying out and dying off. Make
1:34
sure you keep them alive. And the more
1:37
effort you put into looking after them,
1:38
the more they'll keep flowering. Remove
1:41
faded leaves or for tidy growth. any
1:45
plants that uh leaves are dying on them,
1:47
remove them and yeah, it'll encourage
1:49
more and more growth on the plant. Add
1:52
mulch to lock in warm and moisture.
1:55
Obviously, it's starting to turn cold
1:56
now. It were absolutely freezing the
1:58
other night. It's certainly dropping at
2:00
night now. So, adding that extra layer
2:02
of mulch will keep the plants warmer and
2:05
it will encourage them to keep flowering
2:06
as long as possible as obviously when
2:09
the snow comes and stuff like that, it
2:11
may kill them off. So, make sure you add
2:13
some mulch to keep them a bit warmer,
2:15
especially when it's starting to get
2:16
frosty, and it will encourage them to
2:19
keep giving you great presentations.
2:23
Plant an autumn star plant. A great
2:27
plant to grow in the autumn is
2:29
chrysanthemums. They're absolutely
2:31
gorgeous, full of flower, and they can
2:33
add some beautiful displays into the
2:36
garden and a lotment. Now, I've not got
2:38
one myself. So, I think I need to go out
2:40
and buy some crosanthemums to add some
2:42
great color to my a lotment. So, if
2:45
you've got any ideas of great cryanums
2:47
and where to get them from, let me know
2:49
and I might go and get one to add into
2:51
my garden myself.
2:54
Enjoy those last bursts of color before
2:56
the frost. The frosts are coming soon.
2:59
It's like I said, it's dropping at night
3:01
now. The temperatures are really, really
3:03
going downhill at the moment. And yeah,
3:06
it Possibly it'll be a cold winter this
3:08
year. Um it's been a warm summer, but it
3:11
might be a cold winter. You never know.
3:14
But yeah, make sure you enjoy those
3:15
bursts of color while we've got them.
3:18
And obviously the next burst of color
3:20
will be in the springtime. So it's a bit
3:22
big long time to wait. So enjoy the
3:24
color while we have it. So I hope you've
3:27
enjoyed those tips and advice. Make sure
3:29
you drop us a follow to stay up to date
3:31
with all our videos. Until next time
3:33
everyone, remember keep smiling, keep
3:35
