0:21
and let's enjoy today's
0:24
episode hello and welcome back to
0:27
gardening with Ben for brand new episode
0:31
on this absolutely shocking day it's
0:35
absolutely terrible weather here in
0:37
Sheffield today and thankfully I'm on
0:40
night shift so it doesn't affect me so
0:43
I'm not wasting any time missing the
0:46
allotment but like I was talking
0:48
yesterday obviously when it's weather
0:51
like this it's great weather to be
0:54
spending in your shed in your poly
0:56
tunnel in your Greenhouse still getting
0:58
work done there's still plenty that you
1:01
can do in bad weather like this it's
1:04
also windy as well so make sure that
1:06
anything light like these light green
1:11
houses what made of
1:12
plastic make sure they fastened down
1:14
well and secured because you do not want
1:17
to lose them I've seen so many photos
1:19
over these past few weeks from the
1:22
storms from all the people that have
1:24
lost glass out of the green houses have
1:26
been totally flattened and it's
1:28
devastating to see and just that little
1:31
bit of extra effort making sure that
1:33
it's absolutely secure will make it last
1:38
longer and first off before we go into
1:41
his podcast I just need to ask you all a
1:44
massive favor if you've not checked out
1:46
my second podcast gardening and
1:49
allotment tips the link is in the
1:52
description on this uh podcast go and
1:56
check it out there's over 30 episodes on
1:59
the few to listen to hopefully as many
2:02
people subscribe to that one as they do
2:04
to this one because I would like to get
2:07
that podcast up and running as well and
2:10
there's new podcasts on there every day
2:11
as well like there is on this one so
2:13
you're getting twice the amount of
2:16
podcasts and twice the amount of
2:18
information from gardening with Ben so
2:21
go and check that podcast out and go and
2:24
get listening to them podcasts as well
2:26
and subscribe to them and if you've not
2:27
subscribed to this one make sure you do
2:30
that as well because we're nearly at 300
2:33
subscribers on Spotify so keep on
2:36
subscribing and enjoying these
2:39
episodes so what are we going to talk
2:41
about today we're going to talk about
2:44
growing peppers yes Peppers that is and
2:51
peppers are something that take quite a
2:55
lot of effort to grow and you need to be
2:58
starting to think think about growing
3:01
them now if you wanted to be growing
3:03
peppers but the only issue is with
3:06
growing peppers is that they require
3:09
heat to get the seeds to germinate
3:13
because without the heat the seeds won't
3:16
germinate so you won't get that heat on
3:19
the allotment or in the greenhouse at
3:21
the moment because it's too cold so you
3:24
need to be either using a
3:26
propagator or putting them on a windel
3:30
and getting them growing but the only
3:32
thing you've got to watch out for is do
3:34
not let them get too laggy or they'll
3:37
just not be worth it um you possibly can
3:41
start them off in March but the earlier
3:43
you can start them off the better in my
3:47
opinion and it goes for all Peppers
3:51
Chili Peppers or sweet peppers it's all
3:54
the same when growing them and obviously
3:58
if you start them off now you you got a
4:00
better chance of getting more fruit from
4:02
the plants themselves as well because
4:05
there will be flowering earlier and you
4:08
will get a longer season with them
4:11
that's the same going for tomatoes and
4:13
cucumbers the earlier you start them off
4:16
the longer the season you have of
4:18
growing them and getting more produce
4:21
from them because they will keep
4:22
fruiting up until end of September
4:25
beginning of October depending on what
4:26
the temperatures like and the weather
4:28
but obviously mostly if you're starting
4:30
them off a month earlier you'll probably
4:33
get a chance of having a month extra of
4:36
crops so a thing is when you're growing
4:41
peppers you can either go to the
4:43
supermark uh go to the supermarket and
4:45
bu the seeds or if there is a particular
4:50
variety that you like and you enjoy from
4:54
the supermarket you can grow them from
4:57
the seed of the
5:00
fruit that you buy from the supermarket
5:03
for instance if there is a delicious
5:05
yellow pepper that you enjoy buying from
5:08
the supermarket on a regular basis for
5:10
your salads
5:11
Etc when you're scraping out all them
5:14
seeds save them and dry them out you can
5:18
get some kitchen roll and you scrape all
5:22
the seeds out into a
5:24
m damp them all off and clean all the
5:26
mck off them and let them dry out on a
5:29
tissue and all the gunk and everything
5:31
will uh dry out into the tissue and you
5:34
will be left with the seeds and then you
5:36
can scrape them off and put them into an
5:38
envelope and save them for when you want
5:40
to sew them or when they're ready to sew
5:42
you can sew them straight away so a lot
5:47
of people do this because if you're
5:50
buying a packet of pepper seeds it could
5:52
cost you 2 and you'll only get about 25
5:57
seeds at least where whereas if you're
6:00
buying a pepper from the supermarket you
6:03
could buy three for a pound and you will
6:08
get absolutely thousands of seats in it
6:11
so you're saving money by doing it this
6:14
method uh and there's no reason why you
6:18
can't do it uh there's no specifics on
6:20
why you can't do this but um there's a
6:23
lot of people that do that because it's
6:26
cheaper than buying the
6:27
seeds so I'm going to be doing that for
6:30
quite a few of my uh vegetables this
6:32
year I'm possibly going to be doing it
6:35
for my melons and maybe even the
6:39
tomatoes and I've
6:41
seen people even just cut the tomato in
6:46
half and shove it in some soil and it
6:49
grows it's unbelievable it actually
6:52
grows um so yeah there's if you find a
6:58
favorite
6:59
item in the
7:01
supermarket that is what you should do
7:04
is just save the seeds from them and
7:06
grow them yourself and it's fun it's
7:09
exciting you can uh obviously say oh I
7:12
grew that from that pepper that I bought
7:14
at Tesco or Asda something like that so
7:17
yeah if there's a certain variety that
7:19
you like and enjoy you can grow the
7:21
seeds from it and if you've got children
7:25
they will absolutely love doing this
7:27
because they'll love scraping out all
7:29
the pepper seeds leaving them to dry and
7:32
then you can get involved with your
7:34
child in planting these and getting them
7:38
done so yeah and obviously if you're
7:42
wanting to grow peppers you need to look
7:45
at growing them somewhere warm and
7:49
ideally a poly tunnel or a
7:53
greenhouse and if you've got a
7:55
conservatory you could grow them in a
7:57
conservatory and get produce from them
8:00
but the thing is with peppers is that
8:03
you've got to make sure that they've got
8:05
the pollinators around them to
8:08
get the produce on them um if you're
8:13
grow them in a conservatory you won't
8:15
get no pollinators in there because you
8:18
won't want bees or wasps flying around
8:21
inside your Conservatory throughout the
8:23
summer will you so you need to help
8:27
pollinate them yourself by using I often
8:30
use a paint brush and go around and
8:31
pollinate all the flowers myself and
8:33
then you've got a better chance of
8:35
getting more fruit from your pepper
8:38
plant that's my little tip for you and
8:42
obviously if you've got them in a poly
8:43
tunnel or in a greenhouse you'll be
8:45
leaving the door open in the daytime to
8:47
let the air through and it will help the
8:49
pollinators get in there and get the
8:53
producing the fruit that they need but
8:55
even still when I've got my polyol on my
8:57
Greenhouse I'll still go around
9:00
pollinating those flowers on the plant
9:03
because I want to get the best crop that
9:05
I can and that goes the same for
9:08
tomatoes as well you can go around
9:10
pollinating all the flowers on it and
9:12
helping to to pollinate and get a better
9:16
crop from them sometimes obviously the
9:19
bees won't go around pollinating all the
9:21
flowers on the plant so you need to if
9:24
you can and you've got the spread time
9:27
why not do it yourself and do the job
9:30
that's needed to get the produce for
9:32
them and that is why I always always
9:37
encourage to get bees coming down onto
9:43
your alotment into into the garden
9:45
because if the bees don't come down into
9:46
your garden they won't find the uh
9:49
flowers on the peppers to pollinate so
9:52
the more we can encourage bees in the
9:53
garden the better produce you will get
9:57
from your plants I cannot stress that
10:00
enough the more we can do for the bees
10:02
the bees will help us out more so if
10:05
you've got an allotment and you're not
10:06
growing flowers on it have a look at
10:08
growing some flowers that are for bees
10:11
especially and you will get more produce
10:14
from your plants and I had so much
10:18
fantastic produce from my fruit trees
10:20
last year it is
10:22
unbelievable so that is all the tips on
10:25
growing peppers today so I hope you've
10:28
enjoyed it I do like talking about
10:30
different topics and hopefully I'll talk
10:33
about some different vegetables and
10:35
fruit over the coming months as we've
10:38
got I'm trying to get these out every
10:40
single day and thinking of
10:43
365 different topics to talk about can
10:46
be hard sometimes uh but I know that
10:49
people do love enjoying listening to
10:51
these because I get messages on a
10:54
regular basis from the listeners and if
10:56
you've not sent me a message to say that
10:57
you listen to them send me a message
10:59
because I do love to hear who actually
11:01
listens to these they're getting over
11:03
300 downloads a day at the moment so
11:06
