Is chitting potatoes worth it? Yes,
0:03
that's cheating potatoes. And welcome to
0:06
Gardening with Ben. Today we're going to
0:07
talk about chitting your potatoes and
0:09
whether it's actually worth it. Chitting
0:11
means when you pop them in an egg carton
0:15
or a seed tray and put them in a light
0:17
cool area for them to start sprouting.
0:21
You don't want them to sprout loads and
0:23
get leggy or it can cause stress on the
0:25
potato and you don't get as good crops.
0:28
Sometimes when you go into the garden
0:29
centers, you'll see loads of shoots on
0:31
them and that is when they've been in a
0:32
dark area and yeah, they can struggle
0:35
when they're grown like that. So don't
0:37
put them in a dark space because that
0:39
won't help them whatsoever. They need a
0:41
light cool area. And we've got ours in
0:44
our poly tunnel in a mini greenhouse
0:46
where we've been chitting them for a
0:48
couple of weeks now. And we will be
0:50
planting these on Good Friday. I always
0:52
plant my potatoes on Good Friday even
0:54
though it changes every year. It's an
0:55
old gardener's tale to plant them on
0:57
Good Friday. It's to do with the moon
0:59
and yeah, I've always stuck to that
1:01
rule. So yeah, we hopefully will get a
1:04
great crop this year. We always get a
1:05
good crop every single year. Now I'm
1:07
going to be growing my potatoes in
1:09
containers as I don't like them in the
1:12
ground because why worm get them? Slugs
1:14
get them and you end up stabbing them as
1:15
well when you're digging them up which I
1:17
absolutely hate because you've lost a
1:18
potato and I end up stabbing more than I
1:20
actually harvest. So, let's have a look
1:22
at what our potatoes look like in our
1:26
So, these are all the potatoes that
1:28
we've got. Now, we got these from
1:30
Jameson Brothers and we've got four
1:33
varieties. We got a different variety as
1:35
well, which weren't from Jameson's
1:37
Brothers, but hopefully we'll get some
1:39
great crops from that as well. So, we've
1:42
got four varieties. We've also got a red
1:43
variety and I've got my Charlotte
1:45
variety, which I love, absolutely love.
1:47
We've got Maris Piper, uh, obviously a
1:50
well-known one. So hopefully we get some
1:53
great potatoes from these. Now, as you
1:55
can see, we've put them up. We've got
1:57
this eyes facing up so that they can
2:00
sprout and get started. Obviously,
2:02
they're kept in this mini greenhouse to
2:04
keep them um dry and not get too damp or
2:09
moist because we don't want that and we
2:11
don't want them rotting. So, they are
2:14
doing pretty well in this greenhouse.
2:16
So, like I said, we'll be putting those
2:19
out to plant on Good Friday. I once had
2:21
them in my shed and the squirrels and
2:24
the mice or rats ate them, which wasn't
2:27
very good at all. And yeah, I ended up
2:30
with hardly any potatoes last year, so
2:32
we made sure they're secure in this mini
2:34
greenhouse so nothing can get to them.
2:36
Fingers crossed the squirrels won't bite
2:38
through the plastic. But yeah, so far so
2:40
good. They're all still there.
2:43
You don't have to chit your potatoes,
2:45
but chitting also speeds up the time of
2:48
harvest. You'll be harvested them a few
2:50
weeks earlier than you would do if you
2:52
just planted them straight in the
2:54
ground. So, if you want an earlier
2:55
harvest, that is one of the reasons why
2:57
they ch them and it forms the sprouts,
3:00
which helps them get the growing
3:02
started. So, yeah, it speeds them up a
3:04
little bit and that's why we do it. So,
3:06
you don't have to chit them. It's just
3:08
one thing that I've always done. Not
3:09
everybody chits the potatoes. Um, but
3:12
it's something that I always do and it's
3:14
something I look forward to it because
3:15
that's one of the first jobs that I do
3:17
in the a lotment in the new year and
3:19
it's exciting to get started because I
3:20
don't start a lot of my seeds off until
3:22
March time. So yeah, that is the reason
3:24
why we start chitting. So make sure you
3:27
drop us a follow to see when we plant
3:29
all our potatoes. Until next time
3:31
everyone, remember keep smiling, keep
3:33
shining and keep gardening with Ben
