0:25
everyone and welcome back to gardening
0:28
with Ben for for an episode today I hope
0:32
you're all well and I hope you've all
0:34
had a good weekend it's the start of a
0:36
brand new week which means it's a start
0:39
to learning more gardening tips and
0:41
advice whether it be from me whether it
0:44
be from online
0:45
gardening groups or whether it be from a
0:49
TV show you're
0:51
always always learning with gardening I
0:54
know I'm certainly learning every single
0:57
day and yesterday was one of the main
0:59
days of gardening learning for me
1:02
because I was learning from all my
1:03
followers all about where how to plant a
1:08
grap Vine because I've never grown a
1:09
grap Vine before that's something new to
1:11
me so rather than look it all up I asked
1:15
my followers what is the best way to
1:18
grow a great Vine and a lot of people
1:21
were telling me that I need to plant the
1:22
root outside and then train it inside my
1:26
Greenhouse or poly tunnel so that's
1:28
exactly what I've done that's why I've
1:29
plan planted it I've planted it outside
1:31
my greenhouse and I'm going to grow it
1:34
into the greenhouse over the year and
1:37
see how well it does so thank you if you
1:39
are one of those people that gave me
1:42
tips and advice it's always good to
1:43
learn from one another and I'm certainly
1:46
learning all the
1:48
time and I don't think I ever will stop
1:50
learning so what have we been up to
1:54
today well today is my last day down at
1:57
the alotment because I'm back on nights
1:59
tonight
2:00
and I don't usually go to the alotment
2:02
when I've been on nights um I don't
2:05
usually wake up till about 2 half 2 the
2:08
only time I tend to go down to the
2:10
alotment when I've been on nights is
2:11
during the summer periods when either
2:14
I'll go after I finish shift to go and
2:17
water it all or I'll wake up in the
2:20
afternoon if it's nice and go down there
2:22
for a couple of hours but at the moment
2:24
I don't need to go down I can cope
2:27
without being on the allotment for 4
2:29
days and then go back to the allotment
2:31
for another four days to spend some good
2:33
time there
2:35
so that's the only time I'll be back
2:37
down at the plot so we're going to be
2:39
resting now for 4 days we're going to be
2:41
building our energy back up and thinking
2:44
of what to put on that list of jobs to
2:47
do when I go back so today we have been
2:52
finishing off maintenance work around my
2:56
fruit Tre area what's been probably
2:59
there for about 10 years now in my plot
3:02
um I gave it a massive revamp years ago
3:06
uh the fruit tree area and it needed a
3:09
bit of a repair some of the wood was
3:11
starting to rot uh around my uh edging
3:14
and around my beds but I've replaced a
3:18
few pieces of wood around there I've
3:21
also pruned my cooking apple back tree
3:24
back a bit because it was getting too
3:26
tall and we're not meant to let them
3:28
grow too big um on our s side so I've
3:31
given it a little bit of a tidy up and
3:34
then this week I've been creating a new
3:37
flower bed down the side of my fruit
3:39
trees so that is all in place I've
3:44
filled it all up with old compost what
3:47
was just uh in my shed from when I've
3:50
used it for growing tomatoes and stuff
3:52
and I just Chu all the buckets worth of
3:54
compost into a bin and it yeah I reuse
3:59
it in every is that I can plant flowers
4:01
in and stuff like that I won't reuse it
4:03
for seeds but I'll reuse it in my beds
4:06
down the sides of the plot to improve
4:08
the soil and to grow flowers in it and
4:11
also it looks nicer when you've filled
4:13
them up with compost rather than the
4:15
soil look so it does look a bit better
4:18
so we've been doing that and my Lord it
4:21
did take a lot of compost to fill this
4:23
uh bed up but we've done it we've
4:25
managed it all so that is all complete
4:28
so I need to be working out and planning
4:31
what flowers I'm going to be growing in
4:33
that bed and yeah it's a new bed um
4:36
there is some rasur canes what grow in
4:38
it so I'm going to be filling it up uh
4:41
with flowers and the raspber canes will
4:42
obviously grow grow through it and grow
4:45
behind it but yeah it's certainly going
4:48
to add a lot more color to the plot I'm
4:51
just adding new flower beds everywhere
4:53
all over my plot this year and I just
4:56
can't wait for summer I know I keep
4:58
saying that I know my podcast but it's
5:01
going to look fantastic this year if it
5:03
August to plan and I keep up with the
5:06
momentum and the uh enjoyment what I'm
5:10
spending down there at the moment it's
5:12
really going to look fantastic this year
5:15
and I can't wait to share it all with
5:17
you and if you do follow me on my
5:19
socials I am starting to put out more
5:22
photos at the moment and share more
5:25
stuff with you all as obviously it's
5:27
starting to get a lot nicer on the plot
5:29
and stuff like that at the moment things
5:30
are starting to appear and look good so
5:33
we'll be sharing a lot more content over
5:35
the time and I hope you all enjoy the
5:38
content that we do share and obviously
5:40
on my Facebooks I go live all the time
5:43
so you can see what I'm actually doing
5:46
down there rather than me just
5:47
explaining it over a podcast it's good
5:49
to see it sometimes so you can always
5:51
check out my Facebook lives as well
5:53
where I give like TOS around the plot
5:55
and show what's happening so yeah we've
5:58
done all that so next week's task is
6:02
going to be a lot harder than this
6:04
week's task this week's task was to sort
6:07
out the maintenance around my where my
6:09
plum trees are uh make a new flower a
6:12
couple of new flower beds around there
6:14
which I did and obviously around my
6:16
fruit trees making that nicer and adding
6:19
some flower beds in there and also I
6:22
repaired my poly tunnel as well and I
6:24
also planted a lot more fruit and Bulbs
6:26
as well so I did do quite a lot this
6:28
week um on my four days off but next
6:31
week's task is a lot harder because this
6:34
is my new fruit area all the fruits now
6:38
planted in this area that's all sorted
6:40
um I've got my phoness black BRZ I've
6:43
got some sum of rber canes what I've
6:46
been popping up where they shouldn't do
6:47
so I've moved them all into this new
6:49
fruit area I've got my strawberry plants
6:53
I've got my red
6:55
gooseberries I've got my new blueberry
6:58
plants I've got my new Victoria plum
7:01
trees I've got my gra rine so there's
7:04
quite a lot going off in this
7:07
area and next up is to sort out the size
7:11
of the beds because some of the beds are
7:13
too wide and I can't walk down them with
7:15
my big feet uh I do usually like to have
7:18
my beds uh my paths a Paving slab slab
7:22
width uh to walk down because if I do
7:25
manage to acquire some Paving slabs from
7:27
anyone if you live in the Sheffield
7:29
areas send me a message if you've got
7:30
any Paving slabs you want to drop off at
7:32
my allotment I can't pick them up
7:34
unfortunately because my boot doesn't
7:35
work but if you've got any I will gladly
7:38
accept
7:39
them um as I acquire Paving slabs I do
7:43
like to fill the paths up with them
7:45
because it is a lot nicer to walk on
7:47
Paving slabs and on the black membrane
7:49
or on the soil because it's nice and
7:52
flat and you can just sweep all the mck
7:54
off it and it looks a lot nicer so yeah
7:57
I I like to use Paving slabs on my path
7:59
wherever possible wherever I can acquire
8:02
them from be to be honest uh I will be
8:04
looking at starting once I've got all my
8:07
plot back in shape and tied it up that
8:10
will be the next plan to start buying a
8:12
few more Paving slabs every single week
8:14
to complete armop paaths uh that's going
8:17
to be certainly a mission and a half uh
8:21
cuz it will need quite a lot of Paving
8:23
slabs and like I said my boot's not
8:25
working so I have to put them through
8:27
the side door but yeah we can get a few
8:30
in there at a time and hopefully get it
8:33
all sorted so there's quite a lot of
8:35
work still left to do on my plot uh as
8:37
we get along so the next I I'll only
8:40
have three days off next uh because
8:42
obviously when I finished my fourth
8:45
night I lose a day because I'm sleeping
8:47
till the afternoon and I won't get down
8:49
to the allotment so we won't get much
8:52
done that day so next week's job is
8:56
going to be sorting out all this new
8:58
food area area uh I need to make sure
9:01
all the paths are wide enough all the
9:04
beds are secure and then the main task
9:07
is to sort out down the side of my plot
9:10
because my plot's a bit higher than my
9:12
neighbor's plot and it's starting to cap
9:17
size at one side so I need to look at a
9:19
way of keeping the soil up and also put
9:24
up a new fence because the fencing uh
9:27
just all collapsed uh I did cure it
9:29
after it had been windy because it had
9:32
all blown down but it's really had it
9:34
now uh it needs a good looking at and a
9:37
good sorting out and hopefully we can
9:40
make it look nice really because that's
9:42
what I plan to do is make the area look
9:45
as nice as possible and looks great yeah
9:49
I like to have nice growing areas and
9:51
make it look attractive I know it's only
9:54
an alotment it's only somewhere waiting
9:56
cre around but it's nice and good to
9:58
have pride the work that you do I'm sure
10:01
you are the same when you're at home or
10:03
on the alment you like to take pride in
10:05
how it looks and whether it looks nice
10:08
or not so we're going to be busy doing
10:10
all that and getting it all ready so
10:14
it's going to take a long time to
10:16
hopefully get it ready um I'm not
10:18
expecting my plot to be finished until
10:21
what are we in now March the end of
10:24
April I want all my plot to be finished
10:27
and ready for May time so it's quite a
10:30
mission and a half but we are getting
10:32
there and I'm on track to doing it uh
10:36
the next 4 days we'll obviously be doing
10:38
all that side plot and then it'll be on
10:40
to my main plot which will be a lot
10:42
harder and it'll take a long time uh to
10:45
get all that ready and complete because
10:47
I've got some new beds to build on there
10:49
as well so it's going to be all systems
10:52
go um throughout March getting it all
10:56
and like I said I use April to paint all
10:59
the
11:00
beds and paint any bits in the shed what
11:03
need doing so it's going to be very busy
11:05
over the coming time but I know I'm
11:08
enjoying it I'm certainly I'm enjoying
11:10
it this year this year has been a
11:12
fantastic year so far down at the plot
11:14
I've spent so much time there and the
11:17
weather's been fantastic it's not being
11:19
bad to be down on the plot at all I'm
11:21
certainly getting into it this year and
11:24
I'm excited I'm excited at the things
11:27
I'm going to grow like I'm going to be
11:28
growing lots of different types of
11:30
melons this year and giving them all the
11:32
love and attention that they need to
11:35
produce some fantastic fruit for me and
11:37
the family and the friends so yeah I I
11:40
really am into doing it this year so I'm
11:43
excited to share it all with you and now
