0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:28
well it's my time off again uh yes it
0:31
does come around fast but we've got 4
0:34
days off now and time to spend some good
0:39
time on the allotment and getting all of
0:42
it cleared because that is my task by
0:44
the end of the month to get every bed
0:47
dug over and I'm nearly there I think I
0:51
may possibly do it we will see depending
0:54
on if I go out on Friday night and get
0:56
drunk that'll make only 3 days to spend
0:58
on the allotment
1:00
but it's payday and I certainly do
1:03
deserve to have a night out once in a
1:06
while so the question is did we survive
1:12
all three storms what we've had recently
1:15
um I can't even remember the names of
1:17
them uh but yeah wow has it been
1:21
Dreadful uh I don't think the storm
1:25
Unice uh what was expected to be big uh
1:28
up here was that big to be honest it was
1:31
more the third one that was big uh in
1:36
Sheffield that was really windy
1:40
um and the thing is with uh finishing
1:43
work at 7:00 I don't get a chance to go
1:45
down to the alotment at night and go and
1:48
check on it after I've finished work so
1:51
I've been sat here wondering for the
1:54
last 4 days is my shed still standing
2:00
because um the other day I had to do
2:04
quite a few repairs to it as it had got
2:06
bit battered and dismantled in the wind
2:09
and the rain but I repaired it and got
2:12
it ready for the storm which was meant
2:15
to be big up here and got it all ship
2:19
shape and I thought I'm not going to
2:21
spend any money on doing the repairs
2:23
because if we get bad storms I've just
2:27
wasted money so I didn't spend any money
2:29
on it I just used what I got to repair
2:31
it so the dreaded day came today I was i
2:36
w I woke up early and I thought I'm
2:38
going to go to the alotment and let's
2:40
hope and pray that it's still standing
2:43
and that I've not don't have to spend
2:46
too much time rebuilding it all and
2:48
spending money on it because I was
2:51
literally talking to my friend the other
2:52
day and I was saying I'm going to start
2:54
a GoFundMe page for my shed if uh it's
2:57
destroyed in the wind because I
2:59
certainly can't afford to rebuild it um
3:02
but yeah I have checked it today and it
3:06
is still
3:08
standing which I'm so over the moon
3:10
about
3:12
because uh it cost me like £300 to build
3:16
uh which is cheaper than a proper shed
3:18
and cheaper than a greenhouse and it's
3:20
absolutely massive um but yeah it's
3:24
still standing and it's still going
3:26
strong there is quite a bit of work what
3:28
does need doing on to it but um I can
3:31
keep doing a bit of that throughout the
3:32
summer time period hopefully uh we'll
3:35
have to see about doing that but it's
3:38
all good ready to start my seeds off in
3:41
Spring I'm talking off seeds all my
3:44
onion seeds have started spring in
3:46
through today if you check out my
3:47
Instagram you'll be able to see all
3:49
those on my photos gardening with Ben
3:51
have a look and you'll be able to see
3:53
all my onions popping food now I'm
3:56
growing my onions from seed this year
3:58
not from set I tried from set last year
4:00
and I did set versus seed and Seed did
4:04
better than the sets so I've stuck with
4:06
seed and that's how I'm doing it this
4:08
year and also my herbs are doing very
4:11
well two of my pots have got herbs
4:13
growing in them um but then I went to
4:16
check on my poly tunnel uh it looked
4:18
like it were fine when I walked on
4:20
because the side that I looked at looked
4:22
Immaculate I thought blind me it's
4:25
lasted another year it's been up
4:28
literally 10 years this plastic and each
4:31
year I keep thinking I'm going to have
4:33
to end up replacing the skin soon
4:35
because the creases they start to
4:38
disintegrate and wear and tear uh and I
4:42
thought it's going to end up going one
4:43
year and I went around the corner to
4:46
look at the other side of the poly
4:47
tunnel and there is a huge split down it
4:52
so we've got to get some poly tunnel
4:54
tape to get the split sorted out um
4:59
don't use duct tape if you've got splits
5:01
in your poly tunnel or cell tape go for
5:03
the strong poly tunnel tape it's
5:05
waterproof it's fantastic it does the
5:08
job it will hold it firm and tight and
5:12
if you've got any rips in your polyol do
5:14
them fast before the wind gets hold of
5:16
it and ends up pulling all the poly
5:18
tunel cover off because you don't want
5:20
that um so hopefully it will last
5:23
another year uh possibly a couple of two
5:26
years uh but I will start looking around
5:29
and measuring up about seeing about
5:32
getting a new skin for it so if there's
5:34
any poly tunel people listening feel
5:36
free to give me a free poly tunel
5:39
skin but no uh they are quite expensive
5:42
to buy obviously not as much as the full
5:45
poly tunel would cost which set me back
5:47
about £500 when I purchased it uh which
5:51
is obviously very expensive but for the
5:53
10 years that I've had it I've certainly
5:55
got my money's worth from it I can't
5:57
believe how well it has lasted so it's
6:00
just going to be a case of replacing the
6:01
skin and getting a new one of them on
6:04
and obviously the UV uh stuff inside the
6:08
skin uh will have uh gone by now so it's
6:12
good to get a new skin on it eventually
6:14
so I need to replace it but it's a work
6:17
involved in doing that because I'm going
6:19
to have to dig all my trenches back out
6:22
I'm going to have to put the skin back
6:23
on Hammer it back to the doors and then
6:26
pile all the soil back in with the
6:28
bricks on top ET ET Etc um but yeah
6:33
we'll we'll start looking around at
6:34
getting some skins for it uh the
6:36
question is should I start a girl from
6:38
me page for that skin
6:40
cover cuz they're not the cheapest uh
6:43
proper polyol skins but uh they're
6:46
definitely worth it and if you put it on
6:48
right it will last a long time uh like I
6:51
said man's lasted 10 years so far so I'm
6:54
quite impressed with that so yeah we'll
6:57
have to have a look around and start
6:59
pricing them up and seeing how much it
7:02
will cost so keep on listening to these
7:04
podcasts uh because the revenue that I
7:07
earn from these will obviously go
7:09
towards it and I only get about 22 an
7:13
episode uh per day um about 2 p a day I
7:18
get so yeah it's not a big amount from
7:20
my podcasts uh but it all goes towards
7:23
my allotment and Improvement and buying
7:27
stuff will help me talk about stuff on
7:29
here as well so it all goes back into
7:33
everything that I do for you so yeah we
7:36
have had quite a busy day down at the
7:39
allotments today I've been having a good
7:41
look around seeing how things are
7:42
growing my roses are sprouting which I
7:47
planted last month uh which I purchased
7:51
uh from the supermarket uh they climbing
7:54
roses they're all sprouting which is
7:56
good sign and yeah uh I've been digging
8:00
over some beds uh I'm like I said I'm
8:03
nearly at the top of my plot now so I've
8:05
nearly dug over every uh every bed so
8:09
then we will
8:11
be doing all the paths getting all the
8:13
paths cleared and then we will be on to
8:17
sorting out around my top area of my
8:19
plot which I've never really done I
8:21
started it last year but I've not
8:23
completed it yet so I need to spend
8:25
quite some time on
8:26
that and then also I need to then start
8:31
repainting all the beds getting all them
8:33
painted paint all my
8:35
fences and yeah get it looking nice
8:38
ready for springtime I'm just waiting to
8:41
make sure all the bad weather is
8:42
finished before I do paint it all
8:44
because it it even though it's wood
8:47
paint it will wash off uh after bad
8:50
weather and stuff like that so we want
8:52
it looking good for spring and summer
8:54
just before we start planting everything
8:56
that's when I'll start putting it all in
9:00
really so yeah we've got quite a lot to
9:02
do um I've I've been checking all my
9:05
bulbs all my bulbs are popping through
9:07
um I planted absolutely loads uh at the
9:11
end of last year uh every time I kept
9:14
seeing them cheap I kept buying them uh
9:16
to fill the areas up around my plot and
9:19
they're all popping through pretty good
9:20
now uh I just need to keep an eye on
9:23
them because something's pinching them
9:24
I'm blaming the squel uh but yeah
9:27
something's pinching them so hopefully
9:29
doesn't pinch too many and we still get
9:31
some bulbs growing but I can't wait to
9:34
see all the spring color down on the
9:36
plot this year and I've also seen in our
9:39
local supermarket some hydr engers uh
9:42
what they're selling I think at4 each
9:44
they're only small but they are growing
9:48
and they look healthy and I've always
9:50
wanted some hydr engers down on my plot
9:53
because I know how good they look and
9:55
how fantastic they grow and the color
9:57
that they add to the plot as well so I'm
10:00
looking at getting some hydranges on my
10:02
plot as well to make it look even nicer
10:05
and guaranteed color really and
10:08
obviously it all goes depending on the
10:10
soil quality of what color they come to
10:14
uh obviously if it's red it's acid if
10:17
it's blue it's alkaline soil uh that's
10:20
how it tends to go but yeah I would love
10:24
some hydr engers on my plot that's
10:26
another plan for this year so maybe if
10:29
they've still got any on Friday we will
10:32
go and get some hydr engers for the plot
10:36
uh which I will certainly share pictures
10:37
of them with you all so yeah it's going
10:41
to be a pretty much busy busy week down
10:44
at the plot this week uh I've certainly
10:46
got lots to get done I'm hoping to get
10:49
down there pretty early tomorrow we're
10:51
going to have a big day down there
10:52
tomorrow because I want to finish off
10:54
these beds and then start on my paths
10:58
and hopefully repair my Poly tunel on
11:00
Friday because I'll need to go out and
11:02
get some poly tunnel tape and I've not
11:04
got enough money until uh payday so I'll
11:07
be waiting to get that poly tonnel tape
11:10
and hopefully it won't have blown off by
11:13
then uh but yeah we're going to be a
11:16
busy week so keep watching everything on
