What Are Estima Potatoes?

Estima is a maincrop potato variety with pale yellow skin and light yellow flesh. It has an all-round texture, sitting between waxy and floury, which makes it suitable for boiling, roasting, baking, wedges, and chips. Estima is valued for its uniform tubers and consistent performance.

When to Plant Estima Potatoes

In the UK, Estima potatoes are usually planted:

  • Early to mid-April, once the soil is workable and the risk of severe frost has passed

Chitting seed potatoes before planting is recommended to encourage strong early growth.

How to Grow Estima Potatoes

Soil Preparation

Estima potatoes grow best in fertile, well-drained soil. Before planting, dig in plenty of well-rotted compost or organic matter to improve soil structure and nutrient availability.

Planting Depth and Spacing

  • Plant seed potatoes 10–15 cm deep
  • Space plants 35 cm apart
  • Leave 70–75 cm between rows

This spacing allows for good airflow and room for tubers to develop fully.

Earthing Up

As shoots emerge, gradually mound soil around the stems. Continue earthing up until ridges are around 20 cm high to protect tubers from light and improve yields.

Watering

Water regularly during dry spells, especially when plants are flowering and tubers are forming. Avoid waterlogging, as overly wet soil can affect yield and storage quality.

Feeding

Apply a balanced fertiliser at planting time. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can lead to lush foliage at the expense of tuber development.

Growing Estima Potatoes in Containers

Estima can be grown in large containers:

  • Use containers at least 50 cm deep and wide
  • Fill with free-draining compost
  • Earth up gradually with additional compost
  • Water consistently, as containers dry out faster than garden soil

Container yields may be slightly lower than ground-grown crops but are still worthwhile.

When to Harvest Estima Potatoes

Estima potatoes are ready to harvest when:

  • The foliage has completely died back
  • Tubers have reached full size

This is usually late summer to early autumn, around 18–22 weeks after planting.

How to Harvest Estima Potatoes

  • Cut back foliage and wait 7–14 days to allow skins to toughen
  • Lift carefully using a fork to avoid damaging tubers
  • Allow potatoes to dry briefly before storing

How to Store Estima Potatoes

Estima stores well when handled correctly:

  • Store in a cool, dark, frost-free place
  • Avoid washing before storage
  • Ensure good ventilation
  • Check regularly and remove any damaged or rotting potatoes

Properly stored Estima potatoes can last for several months.

Common Problems When Growing Estima Potatoes

  • Blight in wet summers
  • Scab in dry or alkaline soil
  • Slug damage in damp conditions

Good crop rotation, spacing, and even watering help reduce these problems.

Best Uses for Estima Potatoes

Estima potatoes are ideal for:

  • Roasting
  • Boiling
  • Baking
  • Chips
  • Wedges

They are less suitable for very smooth mash compared to more floury varieties.

Why Grow Estima Potatoes?

  • Reliable yields
  • Versatile cooking uses
  • Good storage potential
  • Performs well in a range of UK soils

Tips for Best Results
