This video explains how to clear garden beds in winter and prepare growing areas for the next season.
The guide covers removing old crops, clearing debris, improving soil, protecting beds and organising planting areas. It also includes practical tips to prevent pests and diseases and make spring planting easier.
Preparing beds during winter helps improve soil health and supports stronger plant growth when temperatures rise.

Hey up everybody and welcome to
0:02
Gardening with Ben. Well, we're back
0:04
down here on the a lotment today just
0:06
before Christmas and we're going to be
0:08
doing a bit of work outside while it's
0:10
nice today. It's not too bad over there.
0:12
It's a bit chilly, but it's not too bad
0:14
at all. No rain and yeah, while it's
0:17
decent, we'll spend time outside getting
0:19
all the plot ready. So, we've been doing
0:21
a lot of building work recently. You've
0:23
seen that I've put my arches up. I've
0:25
got my new green houses up and we need
0:28
to start concentrating on the main
0:30
growing area that I use. Obviously,
0:32
we'll not be planting out here till May
0:34
time. So, we've got plenty of time to
0:36
get it all ready, but I want to be ahead
0:38
of the game and get started and get
0:40
cracking. Now, next winter, I'll
0:42
probably be doing a massive
0:44
redevelopment of this area, but I've got
0:48
stuff to buy uh for my poly tunnel work
0:51
what I'm doing. And yeah, we'll
0:54
concentrate on that and then next winter
0:56
probably do the outside up. So, let's
0:59
see what we're doing today down at the
1:01
pot.
1:03
So, this is my main growing area. As you
1:06
can see, I've done some of the beds up
1:07
from where I planted out my winter veg.
1:10
Uh, we like need to fill some borders in
1:13
and get them screwed together and get
1:15
them tidied up. But yeah, we need to
1:17
sort the paths out, sort out the beds
1:19
that I'm not using, and tidy them up and
1:21
rebuild them, and make them last another
1:23
year, get them dug over, get them
1:25
cleared, and get it all tidied up and
1:27
looking a bit more neater and
1:30
photogenic. But yeah, there's a lot of
1:32
work to do, but we're going to crack on
1:34
and start getting there. We'll start
1:36
from the top and work his way down to
1:38
the bottom and get cracking with it all
1:41
and hopefully getting it looking in a
1:43
better state, ready for next year. It
1:45
will be one less job to do when spring
1:47
comes when we're sewing all the seeds.
1:49
So yeah, I know obviously the weeds will
1:52
grow back, but keeping it maintained and
1:55
keeping it on in shape will help in the
1:58
long run. So yeah, we best get cracking,
2:02
best get tidying. There's a lot of
2:03
tidying up to do, a lot of rubbish, but
2:06
yeah, we'll get started and we'll see
2:08
how well we get on. So we have cleared
2:12
four beds and re screw them back
2:15
together so that they hold for another
2:17
year. Obviously, we can't be painting
2:18
them now because it's too wet, so we
2:21
can't spruce them up, but they are
2:23
looking better. And yeah, we we've got
2:26
four down. We've got more to do. But
2:28
we'll hopefully carry on doing them
2:30
through the winter period as as and when
2:34
we can because obviously the weather
2:36
will be changing during the winter
2:37
period. But while it's mild, while it's
2:39
nice, we are out in the garden getting
2:42
stuff done. So, let's have a look at the
2:43
outcome of today. So, there we are.
2:45
We've got four beds tidied up, rescrewed
2:48
back together, and dug over. So, yeah,
2:51
we'll have to keep them weed-free during
2:54
the winter months, but there's lots to
2:57
keep us going through then. But yeah,
2:59
I'm happy with how they've come out. We
3:01
need to be propping us broad beans up
3:03
soon. That's one job that I need to do
3:05
as well as they're starting to get a bit
3:07
taller. So, we need to put some netting
3:08
up and fasten all them up. That's one
3:10
job that we've got to do. But hopefully
3:12
if it's decent, we'll be moving on to
3:14
the next four beds tomorrow and then
3:18
we've got another eight beds after that.
3:21
So, we've not got much to do, but it's a
3:24
job sorted and well done once it's done.
3:27
But yeah, we're cracking on. We're
3:30
getting it sorted. And next year's
3:33
resolution is to be more tidy.
3:37
Hold me to that one. But yeah, the birds
3:40
are absolutely loving the bird feeders
3:42
at the moment as well. Absolutely. So
3:45
many blue tits coming down at the
3:46
moment. But thanks for watching today's
3:49
video. Make sure you drop us a follow to
3:51
stay up to date with all our a lotment
3:52
transformation throughout the winter
3:54
period. Absolutely loads getting done
3:56
whileever we can, whileever the
3:58
weather's nice. But yeah, lots happening
4:01
down here at the moment. So until next
4:02
time everyone remember keep smiling,
4:05
keep shining and keep gardening with bed
4:06
everyone.
