and let's enjoy today's episode hello
0:25
everyone and welcome back to gardening
0:27
with Ben well it's Tuesday and we have
0:32
got until Friday off work so I've got 3
0:36
days to spend at the allotment I never
0:39
managed to get yesterday I was too tired
0:42
after my night shifts and I just wanted
0:44
to relax so I didn't bother going to the
0:47
allotment yesterday but we have been
0:49
down today and my have we done some work
0:52
today so first up I went to my favorite
0:55
store B
0:57
Q always looking for bargain
1:00
and yes I certainly found some again
1:03
today I've purchased eight campola for
1:08
my allotment because the Fantastic
1:10
flowers on them they spread up
1:13
to 50 cm I think it is or possibly more
1:18
uh so hopefully they'll spread amongst
1:21
my flower beds and attract the bees
1:24
because that is my key plan this year to
1:27
attract as many bees as possible to my
1:29
plot and I've actually seen my first be
1:32
today um I couldn't believe seeing it on
1:35
the alotment whether it were just hiding
1:38
somewhere and it just came out of
1:39
nowhere but yeah I saw my first be today
1:43
and it's good to see that spring is
1:46
finally on its way and all the bulbs are
1:49
starting to pop up and it's looking
1:52
beautiful and the more plants that I can
1:55
purchase for the plot that will come
1:57
back year after year it saves me less
1:59
time in the future sewing as many seeds
2:02
I will be sewing lots of flower seeds
2:04
each year don't get me wrong but I've
2:06
definitely want as many permanent
2:09
fixture plants in as possible and
2:11
campola grows back every single year as
2:14
well so hopefully it doesn't get killed
2:16
off when cold weather comes and it stays
2:19
strong and keeps on growing and
2:21
attracting those bees because it's got
2:23
so many flowers on it already and
2:26
they've been reduced from4 to1 so I
2:29
bought
2:30
eight all eight of them that were left I
2:33
bought them all and I also purchased
2:38
some phess blabber now I've been going
2:40
on about these for a while uh on some of
2:43
my podcasts I've been wanting to get
2:45
some and I finally got some um these I
2:49
bought three plants in total and these
2:52
were £525 each which I don't think's too
2:55
bad really and again buying fruit you
3:00
get your money's back in no time because
3:02
when you're buying a pet of black brez
3:04
you're paying like2 pound for a pet so
3:07
you definitely getting your money back
3:09
and obviously I grow a lot of
3:10
raspberries as well so they'll
3:12
definitely go nice with the raspberries
3:14
blackberries and raspberries and ice
3:16
cream oh it's making my mouth drool just
3:18
thinking about it
3:19
now but yeah um I'm hoping to grow those
3:23
along my fencing but I don't know how
3:26
Wild they will grow they're quite well
3:29
established already they must have been
3:31
like growing well to start off with and
3:34
hopefully they do take well and if needs
3:38
be I'll have to put some wires up to
3:40
grow them along wires and stuff like
3:41
that to train them but for now I'm going
3:43
to be growing them along my fencing and
3:46
yeah if they get any bigger I'll
3:48
definitely have to get some wires up but
3:49
I'm growing them between mine and my
3:51
neighbor's plot so that we both can
3:53
benefit from it because I do I do love
3:55
sharing stuff with my neighbors and yeah
3:58
you're probably thinking he's got lucky
4:00
neighbor definitely I do love sharing
4:03
produce with other people it's the joy
4:05
of growing and that is what I get out of
4:07
it the joy of sharing as well sharing
4:10
with one another down there so we've got
4:13
them planted up next up we also
4:17
purchased some asparagus now I've never
4:19
grown asparagus before um it's something
4:23
new to me again asparagus is expensive
4:25
to buy from the
4:27
supermarkets uh so I thought why not try
4:29
and grow some myself and see how we get
4:32
on we' bought one packet for the time
4:34
being and that's got two plants in it I
4:36
may purchased another another one but
4:39
we'll see how we get on and how we've
4:41
got space for it I'm going to try and
4:43
make proper asparagus bed for it uh to
4:46
keep them all together and keep them
4:49
where they should be really once they're
4:50
planted they're going to be staying in
4:52
the same place so I need to make sure
4:54
it's a nice bed for it and plenty of
4:58
nutrition in the ground for it to give
4:59
it that establishment it needs to get it
5:02
growing and get it going on the plot so
5:05
we've got that to PL this week and
5:08
hopefully by the end of the week I'll
5:10
have got my seed potatoes as well I've
5:13
seen which ones I want to get so I need
5:15
to get some seed
5:16
potatoes
5:18
and hopefully I don't I I'm in two minds
5:22
I'm growing onions from seed this year
5:24
for definite I've got them in the trays
5:26
already but I'm looking I may get some
5:28
sets we don't know yet we'll see um I
5:32
said I'd go just seeds this year because
5:33
the seeds did better than the sets did
5:36
uh but I'm still contemplating at the
5:38
moment I've grown sets for years uh but
5:41
like I said the seeds did best last year
5:43
uh so I'm still tempted to buy a packet
5:46
of sets and plant them but obviously if
5:49
I don't plant them I've got more room to
5:51
grow other stuff um but yeah I'm looking
5:54
forward to this year it's going to be a
5:55
good year of gardening on the plot
5:58
there's still some veget full seeds that
6:00
I need to get um I need to go through
6:02
all my seed packets and see what we've
6:04
got and what we haven't got and get
6:06
looking at what I'm going to be growing
6:08
because the magazines give me lots of
6:09
free seeds but they don't give seeds
6:12
like pumpkins squash sweet corn runner
6:15
beans broad beans peas uh you don't tend
6:19
to get them in the magazine so I need to
6:20
go out and get all them and get looking
6:23
at what I'm growing this year because
6:25
it's going to be an exciting year I can
6:27
feel it we're going to have some great
6:29
stuff grow
6:30
and
6:32
hopefully I will be sharing lots and
6:34
lots of posts about it uh I'm definitely
6:36
sharing quite a bit on Instagram these
6:38
days so if you're not following me on
6:40
Instagram I'm sharing lots of pictures
6:42
of my stories uh of how I'm getting on
6:45
down at the plot I do love sharing what
6:47
I'm getting up to plus quite a few
6:49
selfies who loves a good selfie uh I
6:52
certainly get a lot of likes and I'm so
6:54
people must like them uh so yeah um I'm
6:58
definitely enjoying this year so far so
7:01
what else have we been up to on the plot
7:02
well I've started going onto my main
7:05
plot now uh I shared it on my Facebook
7:08
live this morning so if you're not
7:09
following me on Facebook check it out
7:11
gardening with Ben and have a look on
7:13
there I did a Facebook live showing
7:15
people around my plot this morning and
7:17
showing how I'm getting on with it and
7:19
what I'm getting up to on the plot
7:21
because like I said I've got a lot to do
7:24
but I feel that I am in a good position
7:27
to get it all done and tided very ready
7:29
for the year ahead so I've got that to
7:32
do and it shouldn't take too long I've
7:36
done two beds today I've got 18 beds in
7:39
total uh so yeah hopefully if I clear a
7:43
few beds every time I go down I should
7:45
get quite a bit done and now I'm H
7:49
trying to spend a bit longer down at the
7:51
plot as it's obviously staying lighter
7:54
so I'm going a bit earlier to the plot
7:56
as well and possibly spended about an
7:58
extra hour on the plot every every day
8:00
now and I'm trying to spend half an hour
8:04
in my shed or my poly tunnel getting
8:07
them tidy ready for spring because
8:10
they're going to be come big major
8:12
growing areas and I usually say I don't
8:16
work in my shed unless it's actually
8:18
raining because I don't like wasting
8:20
time in the shed when it's nice day
8:23
outside and this winter is been nice all
8:26
winter uh I can't really complain about
8:29
the weather whatsoever uh it were nasty
8:31
this weekend but I on night shift this
8:33
weekend so I wen't down at the allotment
8:36
so usually when it's raining I spend
8:39
time in my shed or in my poly tunnel
8:41
getting work done in there but I've not
8:43
had time to go in them because it's been
8:45
decent weather and that's why I'm
8:47
cracking on and getting loads done on my
8:50
allotment and getting it all in ship
8:52
shape and it's probably looking the
8:55
best it's looking in years um because
8:59
I'm spending so much time on it I've
9:01
started at the top of my plot and
9:04
working my way down to the bottom and
9:06
progressing every single week on getting
9:09
further and further down yes I am moving
9:12
rubbish further down the plot but once I
9:14
get to the top of the plot that's when
9:16
it all gets cleared away but it's going
9:19
to look great this year and the time
9:21
that I'm spending down there at the
9:22
moment is brilliant um it's it's it's my
9:26
second home uh if I didn't have my lot I
9:29
don't know what I'd do I'd go still
9:32
crazy being in the flat all the time on
9:34
my own and spending time down there is
9:37
my Lifesaver uh it really is it means so
9:41
much to me having that plot uh if I were
9:44
to get chucked off or I I left it uh I
9:47
don't know what I'd do but yeah it's
9:49
definitely the place that I spend love
9:52
spending time and I love sharing it all
9:54
with you I get so many nice messages
9:57
every single day of people that are
10:00
listening to this podcast and seeing my
10:03
Facebook post or my Instagram post um I
10:06
don't get no negativity whatsoever and
10:09
that's what I love about this that
10:11
there's so many people nice people
10:13
following me and I've made so many nice
10:15
friends as well um I always get back to
10:18
people when they send me a message or
10:20
and talk to them because everybody's in
10:23
all different boats and stuff like that
10:25
so it's good to be nice to people and
10:27
enjoy spending guard in time together so
