Welcome to our final tour of July of the allotment
0:04
I'm gardening with Ben and let's have a tour around our allotment site and see what's growing and what's not growing
0:11
So welcome back to another episode of Gardening with Ben. We're down here on what is a hot July day. It's absolutely gorgeous
0:19
We've had a fantastic week down here, which has meant lots and lots of watering, keeping things alive and yeah, and harvesting as well
0:28
So we're going to give you a final tour for July, ready before we head into August
0:34
and have a tour and see what's happening, what's growing, check upon our seeds, see out there getting on
0:40
from what we're planted in July, and see about what we're going to be planting
0:46
So sit back, relax, and let's enjoy today's episode. So we're going to start off at the front of our allotment and have a look
0:54
going all the way around it, and see what's growing and how well it's looking
0:58
at the moment. So I managed to tidy up all my front water. This week, that is one of the jobs
1:04
that I have got done and you can actually see all the fuchsias again. We pulled out all the bindweed
1:09
even though it's starting to grow back again. It does grow pretty fast, but yeah, the fuchsias are
1:15
looking amazing. And we can actually see the hydrangeas now. The bindweed were strangling them
1:20
before. But yeah, look at them. Absolutely gorgeous. First year that they've flowered and they've
1:25
come out absolutely beautiful. But yeah, we've got another hydrangeer here, which is a lighter pink
1:35
Only one flower on this one, but it is a beautiful flower at that
1:40
It looks absolutely gorgeous. Look at that. And then we've got some more fuchsias down here as well growing
1:51
But we need to get some more plants to fill the gaps, possibly for next year
1:56
and hopefully fill the border up but yeah I can't get over that future
2:03
hydrangea is absolutely beautiful they've come out really well this year and then we come to my archway
2:15
which we've got us climbing roads on we've got some that we need to chop off
2:20
as they're dying off and dead head and then we've got a beautiful pink rose
2:26
just hiding just there as well hopefully it'll be a lot taller of this one next year
2:32
it gets covered by the gate but we've got some more buds coming on this
2:36
and hopefully it'll look nice the next job is to tidy up around this area
2:42
the bindweed's taken over this area but yeah we've got all this to sort out
2:47
and try and sort us plum tree out it's not done very well this year
2:52
I'm not happy with it. Not happy at all with the silver leaf
2:56
which we've got on it. Hopefully, it'll come back better next year
3:02
We'll just have to wait and see. But we've got us border flowers as well down this side
3:08
which have come out absolutely gorgeous, but they're just covered with all the bindweed, unfortunately
3:17
This lilies had it now. It's dying off. And again, the bindweed's taken over
3:22
but yeah it's just about had it so hopefully we'll get it back next year
3:28
and this pink one's just about to die off that's been out for a few weeks now
3:35
being absolutely gorgeous as well but yeah we've had some nice lilies down here this year we might have to purchase
3:42
some more for next year hopefully get some more growing then my fruit trees have gone
3:50
absolutely wild this year I gave my cooking apple a massive prune back last year
3:54
So we've not got many cooking apples on it But we've got some hiding here and there
4:00
In places So hopefully we get some cooking apples To get some crumbles
4:08
But yeah, everything's going wild at the moment Rubarb that start to die off in August But we might get another picking and get some more crumbles from that As you can see we got as pears growing
4:26
They're coming along really well. They should be ready around September time
4:33
We just need them to swell a bit more, but yeah, they're certainly weighing the branches down now
4:38
So hopefully they won't snap them. We've got us eating apples, which are looking good
4:49
They're coming on well, getting to a decent size. So they'll taste delicious
4:57
Got quite a lot of them, actually. Quite a lot coming. So yeah, they're looking pretty good
5:06
I'm pretty healthy. This is our golden delicious apple tree. I can't see where they're hiding on here
5:13
To say they grow big, they hide pretty well. There we are, we've got some there
5:19
Just hiding. And some more. Just come down there as well. So hopefully we'll get a few on
5:28
Doesn't look like we've got loads this year. But hopefully we get some delicious golden delicious
5:39
And now to my favourite part. This flower bed. which I created this year
5:45
Absolutely gorgeous. It was full to brim with spring bulbs, which are still in there
5:50
but we planted loads of summer flowers this year. And it looks absolutely gorgeous
5:56
My salvia's growing wild, it's growing mad. It's looking absolutely fantastic. I'm pleased with how it's all coming on
6:05
We did prune the tops off the other day, so it's bushing out quite well now
6:10
It's taking over and looking. Absolutely gorgeous with lots of flower on it and they're coming out really nice
6:22
Obviously we've got another salvia here. Again, looking absolutely gorgeous. We've got some cucumbers hidden around
6:30
I planted them in gaps but now it's filled out. I shouldn't have really planted them in here
6:35
But hopefully we'll get some cucumbers growing on them. But we've got some fuchsias which are filling out really nice
6:43
These are doing really well. It's going to really fill this area out. I can see that
6:48
And we've got another salvia, which is coming on, absolutely fantastic. But yeah, we've got Burgonians filling the gaps in
6:55
But yeah, the fuchsia should come back each year. And hopefully the salvia will come back each year as well
7:03
But yeah, it's filling out pretty nice. We're now inside the polytunnel
7:10
And yeah, we've got a cucumber ready to harvest. Look at that. That's ready for harvesting that one
7:16
We'll be picking that off, but the cucumbers are doing really well. That one needs fastening back up
7:21
It's going a bit wild. That needs fastening up to the thing. Oh, it's pulled out some of my lavender
7:27
What I've got growing. Fastened itself around it. Has it got any roots on it yet
7:36
Doesn't seem to have any roots growing on it as yet. So pop it back in the soil
7:43
Hopefully we get some roots growing on it. Some are still alive, but some have died off
7:48
Hopefully we get some roots growing on some of these lavenders. And we get some more plants growing
7:54
But that salviate seems to be staying alive, so that one's looking pretty good
8:00
Hopefully we get some more salvia growing. But I did plant all these in
8:05
Have we got any roots coming on any of these yet? No. Hopefully we get some cuttings growing
8:13
That's the plan anyway. We just have to wait and see. We'll take some more cuttings anyway
8:18
and get them started. Haven't got any peppers growing, that's the question
8:25
I never seem to have much luck with peppers. But yeah, he's got plenty of buds on it
8:31
So hopefully we do get some peppers on it Still plenty of time for them to grow But we see how they come on And hopefully get some growing
8:42
You have to be careful the ants do love to eat these plants. As you can see, they're making little holes in them
8:48
So we'll have to keep an hour on them. We're now inside my shed
8:54
As you can see, all our July seeds what we planted. I've grown really well
8:59
Too well. Too well, but we've got a lot of work to do
9:03
The spring onion is all ready for planting out. That's doing absolutely fantastic
9:11
We've got all those beetroot ready to plant out, four trays of that. So we've got loads of beetroot to get in
9:17
We've got some turnips, Swedes and cauliflower, but the label's washed off
9:23
So it's going to be a good guessing game to see which one's which. Let's see which one grows
9:30
We've got some radishes, some spinach, we've got some frilly lettuce
9:42
and we've got some iceberg lettuce as well. So hopefully we'll be planting them out in a couple of weeks
9:47
We just need them to grow a bit faster. They seem to be growing slow then. We've got loads of peas to get out
9:54
These are a late variety. Keldon Wunder. So yeah, we're going to get a load of more peas growing
10:00
down at the allotment. We've got some poppies, which probably won't flower this year
10:10
We've got pansies. I'm growing a load of pansies, which will flower this year
10:15
A flower that I can't say, because I don't know, I can't read the name of it
10:20
But yeah, we've got loads of flowers growing. Coming on well, ready for next year
10:26
So stay tuned. And make sure you stay tuned for all. August tour so that you can see all the flowers that we're planting in August as we are planting
10:35
quite a few in August. So make sure you like and subscribe and stay up today for August's flowers
10:41
and vegetables. We're back outside now and another flower bed which I created this year and as poppies
10:48
are doing absolutely fantastic this year. Absolutely gorgeous. This one's just come out today
10:54
Looks absolutely beautiful. I've been waiting for this to come out but I've been saving the seed heads from
10:59
the other poppies. so that I can grow them next year and get lots more poppies growing
11:04
because these are ornamental poppies. They're absolutely gorgeous, not just your standard red ones
11:14
And as you can see, my Loganberry's growing wild. I'm trying to train it to go along the front of my shed
11:20
We'll get Loganberries on that cane next year. They grow on the new canes what I've grown this year
11:25
so hopefully we'll get lots of Loganberries growing this year. But yeah, they're growing
11:30
wild like the canes which grew last year they're starting to die off now so we'll be pruning them back
11:37
the ones that are dying off to leave the new growth for next year and we've got some sunflowers
11:43
which should be coming out soon we've got all of strobeers growing wild they're sending out all
11:51
the runners so we need to start potting them up and we'll share a video on that soon but yeah
11:56
hopefully we get some more strawberry plants next year we didn't do very well this year on strawberries, but hopefully next year is going to be a good year
12:06
Down this side, I planted a load of beetroot water growing. That is doing fantastic in this compost down this side
12:13
And again, I've got loads of cucumber plants left over, so I shoved them in down this side
12:17
and they're going wild, I need to tidy them up and get them all sorted and get them growing
12:25
Again, my fawness blackberry is growing wild. I need to try and sort that out
12:30
work out how I'm going to grow this down the side of my plot as I'm trying to keep it tied up off the ground to stop it getting broken at the moment and again a great vine
12:47
That is going mad That growing wild so yeah we need to get all that tied up and hopefully get that sorted but yeah we got loads of strawberry plants coming all over the place so we need to sort
13:04
out all the runners and we've got some squash plants growing as well in between the gaps
13:11
trying to use all the area wisely again we've got some climbing roses growing along with the
13:19
I need to get all these pruned. Look at them. These all need dead heading
13:24
So that we get more flowers on him. Now this area is gone mental
13:31
Absolutely mental. I didn't expect it to go like this. I planted a load more sweet corn because my sweet corn weren't doing too well
13:38
That's all growing nicely. My beetroot's going mad inside it in all the gaps
13:44
And there we've got. I don't know if these are pumpkins what are growing. But yeah, it's going absolutely white
13:49
down this side look at it they're doing well we've got sweet peas we only picked all of them
13:59
them the other day and gave them away for a birthday so yeah we've got a load more sweet
14:06
peas to pick keep picking them and they'll keep flowering all the way up to or October possibly
14:13
so yeah keep picking the sweet peas and they'll keep growing up to October we've planted some more
14:19
runner beans the other day as well we need to put a frame up for that but we've got them in the ground
14:23
because they're big enough so keeping them well water till that they stay alive and get rooted
14:29
and get growing so yeah we need to get them sorted out and writing all my jobs down here we've got
14:36
some more sweet corn which we're in longer as you can see we've got some cobs on these we're
14:40
going to protect them soon and put a bottle over them that'll stop the squirrel and the mice and
14:45
the rats from eating them and protect them so hopefully they'll be ready to have
14:49
soon. Look at the size of these sunflowers absolutely massive. I'm six foot five and it's
14:57
taller than me, way taller than me. But these ones have got lots of heads on them. So hopefully
15:03
we're going to get a lot of sunflowers coming out on them and they'll be going to look absolutely
15:07
gorgeous soon when they pop open. My dad's have already come out and flowered, but mine are later
15:14
We've got peas growing. This is early onwards. This was what we grew earlier in the year
15:23
Look at them peas coming. We've got lots of flowers on them. We've got tomatoes down the side as well
15:28
I need to fasten those up. Some of those have come and fattened. But yeah, we've got tomatoes growing everywhere
15:35
We're growing them all outdoors this year to keep them watered easier. We're going to dry out too fast in my polytunnel
15:41
I grew them outside last year and they did absolutely fantastic. So I'm doing them outside again this year
15:47
and they seem to be getting a lot of flowers on them so hopefully we'll get a lot of tomatoes
15:52
we've got some popping on there so hopefully they'll start to ripen soon
15:58
and we'll get some lovely tomatoes growing but yeah it's all coming along good
16:03
we've got his runner beans let me just try and climb over
16:08
these are coming well we've got some ready for harvesting they're coming along really nicely
16:14
so yeah again the more you harvest them the more runner beans you'll get on your plants they seem to like hiding
16:23
everywhere look at that squash growing there hiding through there but yeah the allotment is going
16:33
absolutely wild down here at the moment like i said we're trying to grow plenty more stuff and
16:38
keep things growing throughout the winter this year that's going to be our task to see if we
16:42
can grow anything through the winter like flowers and some vegetables and stuff like that
16:47
keep it going all year round this year. It's going to be a try and effort
16:52
We're going to be planting our Christmas potatoes next week as well. So make sure you stay tuned for that as well
16:57
by giving us a like and a follow and a subscribe and then you'll see when we plant all our Christmas potatoes
17:03
and how well they get on. So thanks for watching today's episode
17:07
As always, remember, keep smiling, keep shining, and keep gardening. We bet everyone
