How to grow awardwinning vegetables.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And today
0:06
we're going to talk about the best
0:07
varieties out there that you can choose
0:10
to grow down at the a lotment and in the
0:12
garden themselves and how we usually
0:15
choose the best varieties out there.
0:20
The way that I usually choose the best
0:23
varieties to grow are from watching
0:25
other people as well. That is one of the
0:28
main ways of trying seeing the pot
0:32
neighbors what they grow. Ask them what
0:34
varieties they grow and yeah try them
0:37
yourself if they've had a good crop from
0:39
them. It's worthwhile trying it yourself
0:41
and seeing if you get a good crop from
0:43
it. And obviously I watch a lot of
0:45
people online as well sharing what they
0:48
do and what they're growing and that's
0:50
how I tend to give it a go. And
0:53
obviously when you're purchasing the
0:55
seeds as well, it can be trial and error
0:58
with different places. Some places will
1:00
do good quality seeds, some not so good.
1:03
And obviously you want to buy them at a
1:05
decent price as well. You don't want to
1:07
pay extortionate prices as well. So it's
1:10
worth off trying around until you find a
1:12
good place where you purchase your seeds
1:15
from. Now I always used to purchase my
1:18
seeds from Wilos but obviously then
1:21
Wilos closed and I were like no where
1:24
can I buy all my seeds from now and
1:26
thankfully the range have got all the
1:28
Wilco seeds in there now so I get all my
1:31
seeds from Wilco and I have a good crop
1:34
from them. Some things aren't obviously
1:36
so good but some varieties are. So, I
1:39
tend to stick to the same varieties that
1:41
I grow each year. And obviously, I get a
1:44
lot of my seeds from gardening magazines
1:48
as I'm addicted to buying the garden
1:49
magazines, not to read the magazines,
1:51
but to buy the seeds, to get the seeds.
1:54
And yeah, that is how you trial and
1:58
error because a lot of the seeds what
2:00
you sometimes get in the magazines are
2:01
not ones that you go out and purchase
2:04
yourself. Certainly not some of the
2:05
things that I've seen. And then I'll
2:08
think, oh, I'll just stick them in and
2:09
give them a try. See if they could grow.
2:11
If not, a well of nothing lost apart
2:14
from the purchase of the magazine. And
2:16
yeah, I give it a go and see how well
2:18
they get on. And that's how I've learned
2:20
from different varieties of them that I
2:23
can grow certain varieties and sometimes
2:26
they're even better. And that is how I
2:28
tried growing purple cauliflower. I
2:30
wouldn't have been out and bought it
2:32
from the shop. I got it free in a
2:34
magazine. So, I tried purple cauliflower
2:35
and it grew tons better than the white
2:38
variety of cauliflower and I was
2:41
outstanded by it. And the same goes for
2:43
growing melons. I've never thought of
2:45
trying to grow melons and I got some in
2:47
a magazine and I gave it a try and they
2:49
did really well. So, hence the reason
2:51
why I'm growing melons down here now.
2:53
So, it's about trial and error and
2:55
trying different places and seeing how
2:57
you get on and writing down the
3:00
varieties that you get growing. It's
3:03
good to keep a log book of what you're
3:05
planting, where you planted it, how it's
3:07
grown, whether it grew well or not,
3:09
whether it was a disaster or not, and
3:11
keeping a name of them because sometimes
3:13
you'll think, "Oh, I'll remember that."
3:15
But you don't. You don't remember. And
3:17
it's good to keep a log of what you do.
3:19
So, if you've not got a gardening log
3:21
book, have a look on somewhere like
3:22
Amazon or even if you create a notepad
3:25
on your phone just to write down
3:27
everything that you've grown and when
3:29
you've grown it and how well it's grown
3:31
and especially the variety as well
3:34
because it's worthwhile remembering
3:35
which variety it is that you've actually
3:38
grown. So, I hope you found that useful.
3:41
Let me know in the comments what your
3:43
favorite varieties are. It'll be glad to
3:45
hear what you enjoy growing and maybe
3:48
I'll try growing some of the varieties
3:49
that you grow as well. So, let me know
