hey everybody and welcome to gardening
0:03
with Ben in today's episode we're going
0:05
to talk about creating that Wildlife
0:08
friendly Garden down at the alotment or
0:11
New Garden so sit back relax and enjoy
0:14
today's episode everyone
0:16
[Music]
0:36
so welcome to today's episode of
0:38
gardening with Ben we're going to talk
0:40
about creating that Wildlife Garden down
0:43
at your alotment or in your garden watch
0:46
my last episode go and watch that
0:48
because we talk about how to start out
0:50
on an allotment so this is a bit of a
0:52
continuation of that really so I love to
0:57
attract the wildlife down to my
0:58
allotment I find it absolutely amazing
1:01
seeing all the different animals and
1:04
birds coming down to the alotment and
1:06
enjoying it and the biggest thing that
1:09
I've done re in recent years is I'm
1:11
attracting the birds to my allotment and
1:13
to the Garden obviously it comes with
1:16
failures because it'll attract the rats
1:18
but it doesn't really matter down at my
1:20
allotment I don't really mind that as
1:22
they're not causing any harm down here
1:25
apart from eating a few bulbs and stuff
1:27
like that but yeah I don't really have
1:29
an issue with that so I have lots of
1:33
bird feeders down at my allotment if
1:35
you've not seen my videos with the bird
1:37
feeders I've got absolutely loads down
1:39
here and I'm starting to attract lots of
1:41
varieties of birds down here birds that
1:43
I don't even know the variety of I have
1:45
to ask my followers what birds they are
1:48
but we've got different bird seeders
1:50
feed us up with sunflower seeds mixed
1:53
seeds we've got peanuts up we put
1:57
raisins out for the black birds and
1:59
sultan us and we put sew blocks up as
2:02
well all different varieties of bird
2:04
feeders down here at the alotment and
2:07
they absolutely love it and obviously
2:10
yes it does attract the squirels which I
2:12
don't mind the squirels I enjoy seeing
2:14
the squirels down here yes they can be
2:16
annoying and disruptive and cause Havoc
2:21
but I don't mind it yes they do dig up
2:24
the spring bulbs but if you put chicken
2:26
wire down and stuff like that until they
2:28
start growing they're pretty safe and
2:31
once they get growing they leave them
2:33
alone so we attract lots of birds down
2:36
here the other Wildlife that you can
2:38
attract to your allotment and garden
2:40
which is the best Wildlife that you can
2:42
get are frogs because the frogs will go
2:46
around and eat all the Slugs up they
2:48
will do the hard work for you and clear
2:51
them all down at the alotment so having
2:54
a pond Sometimes some allotments don't
2:56
allow you to have ponds some don't mind
2:59
it but if it's shallow Pond it should be
3:03
okay so have a pond down into alotment
3:07
have it with water in it obviously have
3:09
some pond plants in it and try and get
3:12
some frog born to put in your pond and
3:15
hopefully attract the frogs through the
3:16
alotment obviously if you can't get any
3:18
frogs Bor you can it'll obviously
3:21
attract the frogs if it's a nice Pond
3:23
and it's welcoming you will get frogs
3:25
down there because there'll be frogs all
3:27
around and they'll soon find it and make
3:30
it their home obviously I've had some
3:33
bricks and stuff around it for shelter
3:35
and to keep them warm and keep them
3:37
moist they will love it and they will go
3:40
around eating all the Slugs up and save
3:44
you a lot of hassle in trying to get rid
3:46
of the Slugs at the allotment so the
3:48
more frogs you have the less slugs
3:50
you'll have a bit like that the same
3:52
goes for hedgehogs if you can get a
3:54
hedgehog house in your alotment or in
3:57
your garden or find out ways of
3:59
attracting Hogs what they like create a
4:01
little sheltered spot for them and the
4:04
Hedgehogs will go around at night time
4:06
eating all the Slugs up and doing a lot
4:09
of work for you and obviously slugs do
4:12
come out at night time mainly rather
4:14
than the daytime and that's when the
4:17
Hedgehogs will go around eating them all
4:18
up and clearing your plot of all the
4:22
Slugs there's obviously other Wildlife
4:25
as well that you can attract you a lot
4:27
and you can attract badges you can
4:28
attract foxes but there's obviously
4:31
different ways and methods of doing that
4:33
which I'm sure you will be able to find
4:35
out obviously certain allotments allow
4:38
you to have chickens on them as well
4:40
having chickens down at the alotment
4:42
that's a good thing as well because if
4:44
you let them roam while you're down
4:46
there on the alotment obviously that's
4:47
to do with different flws sometimes
4:50
you're not allowed to let them Roam if
4:51
there's uh bird flu policies and stuff
4:54
like that but they will go around
4:56
pecking around eating all the little
4:59
weeds that are coming up and they'll eat
5:01
the Slugs as well so attracting chickens
5:05
to your alotment and housing them down
5:07
there obviously it's a lot of hard work
5:09
because you have to come down and feed
5:10
them and clean them and look after them
5:13
but if you allowed chickens and you've
5:15
got the time to do it have them on your
5:17
plot and you will obviously get X as
5:20
well fingers crossed and yeah attracting
5:24
the wildlife to the allotment is
5:25
absolutely fantastic obviously the other
5:28
Wildlife that you can attract are the
5:30
bees now this is a big thing for me down
5:33
at the alotment attracting the bees to
5:35
my alotment I have absolutely loads of
5:38
spring WBS I didn't used to have flowers
5:40
on my plot because I thought what's the
5:41
point in growing flowers I'll just grow
5:44
the veg and the food but without the
5:46
bees you won't get the veg or the fruit
5:49
because the bees obviously pollinate
5:52
your fruit trees or pollinate your
5:55
vegetables like your cetes your
5:57
cucumbers your Tomatoes Etc so the more
6:00
flowers you have down at your alotment
6:02
the more bees you will get coming down
6:04
and helping the pollination and doing
6:06
the hard work in creating the fruit and
6:09
the vegetables down at the
6:11
allotment and the reason why I have so
6:14
many spring bulbs is because the bees
6:16
wake up from hibernation in springtime
6:19
and they will go they'll need food to
6:22
get them started for the year ahead so
6:24
they'll go around the spring bulbs
6:26
spring flowers and if they come to your
6:29
plot and see that you've got all these
6:31
flowers they'll stay around and they'll
6:33
keep coming to your alotment so keeping
6:34
them flowers going throughout the whole
6:36
year finding different flowers what the
6:38
bees like they will come back and help
6:41
pollinate the garden always obviously
6:44
butterflies I love to see butterflies
6:47
down at the alotment and obviously they
6:49
help as well with pollination but they
6:51
do come in the bad ways with caterpillar
6:53
and caterpillars your cabbages and your
6:55
cauliflowers and your brassas but if you
6:58
keep on top of of it and you have
7:01
butterfly netting you can cover them
7:04
over your cabbages and your brassas and
7:06
you can protect them but yeah I
7:08
absolutely love to see butterflies down
7:11
at the alotment and there doesn't seem
7:12
to be many butterflies around these days
7:15
and they're absolutely gorgeous to see
7:17
so attracting the wildlife to The
7:19
alotment Works in the favors as well as
7:21
like ladyb birds as well they'll eat
7:24
different certain uh insects so all
7:28
Wildlife is good good as well so
7:31
attracting it to your plot is key to
7:34
your allotment so have a look around see
7:36
how you can attract the wildlife GE
7:38
alotment and if you do follow certain
7:41
stuff like I do with birds with bees let
7:44
me know in the comments what you do
7:46
because the more Wildlife that I
7:48
contract to my plot I will be happy with
7:51
and I just love to see it down here and
7:53
I've now got Wildlife cameras up so
7:55
hopefully we'll capture some special
7:57
things down here at the allotment and
7:59
and hopefully no bad things but
8:01
hopefully see lots of wildli down here
8:04
at the lman so let me know what you get
8:07
down in your garden and alotment I would
8:09
love to hear what you get in your
8:11
Gardens so if you don't follow me on the
8:14
social media follow me on Instagram
8:16
