0:45

0:48
gardening with Ben for a brand new
0:51
episode blim me it's Friday already
0:54
where has the week gone fingers crossed
0:57
we have a better weekend this weekend
0:59
but we don't know yet
1:00
uh I'll have to check the forecast and
1:02
see what it's going to be like hopefully
1:04
we'll get lots more done down at the
1:06
alotment you'll have to find out later
1:09
in the week what we get up to down at
1:11
the plot whether we actually get some
1:13
stuff
1:14
done well today's episode we're going to
1:17
be talking about how I got over the
1:20
winter Blues in gardening and this is
1:24
quite obviously a personal story but I I
1:30
get over the winter
1:31
Blues from gardening because when I
1:34
first started my allotment what I used
1:37
to do is I used
1:41
to go really hard with my gardening
1:44
throughout all the spring and summer
1:45
periods but when it came to October I
1:49
just leave my plot and leave it until
1:52
January time I wouldn't even go down to
1:55
the alotment to do any work down there I
2:00
Pro uh probably just rock back up in
2:02
January the 1st and see what it looks
2:04
like and get started from then I'd not
2:07
even dug up any old plants or anything
2:10
like that i' just left them all in the
2:11
ground and then I'd have a big M mad
2:14
rush to get it all ready and get it all
2:17
prepared for the year after uh well for
2:21
the that c coming year and get it all
2:24
tidy get any beds remade get it all
2:26
painted get it all tidy again get it or
2:30
weed did and get all the roots up out of
2:32
the ground and
2:36
this was a hard chore to get it done and
2:39
to try and get it all done by March time
2:41
because March time is The Busy period
2:44
down at myot when I'm sewing all my
2:45
seeds getting all them started and
2:48
concentrating on growing them keeping
2:50
them watered etc etc so that is the
2:54
hardest job of the lot
2:57
so I did I did this for years I used to
3:01
do it for years just pack up and not
3:03
come back for January but when I started
3:05
blogging on my allotment and sharing
3:08
tips and advice and showing people what
3:10
I were getting up getting up to down at
3:12
the Block I thought uh I used to get
3:16
messages like people used to say to me
3:18
Ben where are you are you all right
3:21
we've not seen you down at the allotment
3:22
for ages sharing pictures Etc and I used
3:26
to think yeah I'm not staying up to date
3:29
with people I'm uh I'm just leaving them
3:31
hanging they'll probably think I've
3:33
disappeared or left my allotment or just
3:36
vanished but yeah then I started
3:39
thinking I need to carry on through the
3:41
winter period I need to show people
3:43
what's happening down there over the
3:45
winter
3:46
months so I started doing my live
3:49
streams again through the winter period
3:51
And I started showing people things that
3:53
you could grow through the winter I
3:55
don't often grow anything through the
3:57
winter not much at all I learn like have
4:00
some onions in and some garlic in or
4:02
some broad beans in I won't have a lot
4:04
of things growing down at me because I
4:07
use it now as a time for sorting out all
4:10
my plot and getting it all tidy and
4:12
ready for the year next year and as soon
4:16
as the produce starts to die come
4:18
October time when it gets a bit colder
4:21
and when things have stopped producing
4:23
any vegetables like your pumpkins and
4:26
your squashes and stuff I'll start
4:28
digging them up and clearing in the bed
4:30
straight away and the quicker I get all
4:33
my plot cleared ready for the year uh
4:36
for the next year I've ticked it off
4:38
I've got about 18 beds all together
4:42
they're all the pretty much the same
4:44
size and I like count it down like
4:46
thinking I've got three more beds left
4:47
to do I've got six more bed left to do
4:50
etc etc and once I've cleared all my
4:52
beds I'm like I know that I've done the
4:55
biggest part of my plot and Tiding all
4:58
them up because as well I have a lot of
5:01
issues with band weed on my plot and I
5:04
can't really dig into the ground to get
5:08
all the bindweed roots out while things
5:10
are growing in that bed um because bind
5:13
weed will travel all over the place and
5:15
you can't really get it out without
5:17
actually getting a fork in there and
5:18
getting all the pieces out and giving it
5:20
a good turnover to get every little
5:22
piece out so come October time uh
5:27
November time when I'm digging them over
5:29
I'll get most of the bindweed roots out
5:31
yes I'll get some more growing in it
5:33
probably over the winter period but it
5:35
won't grow as fast and I'll just keep
5:38
turning them over every month or so to
5:40
get as much out as possible for the year
5:44
ahead so I'll get all that done and I
5:48
actually enjoy winter now winter is one
5:50
of my best times down at the alotment so
5:53
before like I obviously used to pack it
5:55
up and not come back till January now I
5:57
absolutely love being down there in the
5:59
winter not because I'm growing anything
6:02
but because I'm building stuff and
6:05
getting involved in making it look fancy
6:08
for the year after not that it looks
6:11
fancy uh it just looks fancy to
6:14
me but yeah I absolutely love winter now
6:17
and since obviously like I said I've
6:19
started gardening through the winter
6:20
months I get excited because I'm
6:23
planting all my winter bulbs for
6:25
springtime I'm Tiding all my shed up
6:28
obviously I'm doing men M on it now that
6:30
I've had storm damage um but yeah we
6:33
make it stronger and hopefully last a
6:35
few more
6:37
years um I sweep all my paths down I
6:41
trim all my shrubs back uh I sort out
6:45
all my fuit trees for the year after but
6:48
yeah I absolutely love the winter period
6:50
now being down there yes it may be
6:51
freezing cold and yes I didn't do
6:53
anything down at the plot hardly last
6:55
weekend but some days I absolutely love
6:58
it and I do love the frosty mornings as
7:00
well down there and just enjoying being
7:03
down there but winter has to be one of
7:07
the best periods down at the alotment I
7:09
enjoy having a good fire going because
7:12
Alan I'm a I'm a wood hoarder I don't
7:15
know if you're the same I just store
7:17
wood down at my alotment my shed's full
7:20
of it that much full that the cats used
7:23
it as part of the nest when they were
7:26
like
7:27
uh when they were uh um got some kittens
7:31
down in my shed they were all hidden
7:33
behind it uh but yeah I'm a wood hoarder
7:37
and I'll just save any cut offs as well
7:40
because we're not allowed to burn stuff
7:42
through the spring and summer time we're
7:44
only allowed to burn stuff in the winter
7:45
me months so I'll start all my offcuts
7:48
and I'll just have some nice bonfires
7:50
burning in the winter period I love the
7:53
smell of bonfires as well and you can
7:57
just sit at the side of the bonfire just
7:58
thinking about all the things that
8:00
you're going to do for next year in
8:02
growing but winter is a special period
8:05
of the time down there now and it does
8:08
help my mental health a lot so much
8:12
because people struggle more with the
8:14
mental health throughout the winter
8:16
periods all you see a lot of the time is
8:19
darkness and being out in the fresh air
8:22
and enjoying the passion of being in
8:24
your garden doing what you do you
8:26
absolutely love it and it encourages me
8:29
and now that I'm working 9 to 5 Monday
8:32
to Friday it's nice to get out of the
8:34
house and out of the flat being in the
8:36
fresh air getting your fingers in the
8:38
soil yes it may be nippy and may be cold
8:41
but you can take a nice flash down there
8:43
and have a nice brew as well and I love
8:46
making the content for you all and I
8:48
just love interacting with you all
8:50
sharing what I'm getting up to down at
8:53
the alotment on my Instagram and my
8:55
Facebook and I hope that you all enjoy
8:57
it so if it wasn't for you guys asking
9:00
me where I am through the winter period
9:03
I'd probably still be curled up again
9:06
hibernating throughout the winter period
9:08
and getting ready to start again on the
9:10
1 of January down at the plot but yeah
9:14
it's down to you guys that give me the
9:15
motivation to go to the allotment and
9:18
keep doing stuff to produce for you all
9:21
and it encourages me to learn more about
9:23
the sort of things that you need to do
9:25
in the winter as well as this more
9:28
things to be done every day of the year
9:31
in the allotment an allotment is not an
9:34
easy job and I see it so many times new
9:38
people coming down to the allotments
9:40
thinking it's going to be an easy job
9:41
dig it all over or hire
9:44
a JCB to scrape all the top off and then
9:48
it all grows back again and they soon
9:50
give up after a couple of months it's
9:52
not an easy job if you're thinking of
9:54
taking on a lot and you think it's an
9:56
easy job it is far from easy it's a lot
9:59
of hard work and time and effort trust
10:03
me if youve not got much time just go
10:06
for a small little plot but I've got a
10:09
massive one and if I hadn't had all the
10:11
free time per I wouldn't have been able
10:14
to keep up and get it all sorted and
10:16
done now
10:18
but if you are looking for an allotment
10:21
I will do a podcast on tips and advice
10:24
for taking on alotment coming up as well
10:26
we need to talk about that again we've
10:27
not done that for a while so we'll talk
10:30
about that as well coming up
10:32
soon but yeah thank you all for giving
10:34
me the motivation and the encouragement
10:36
to keeping these podcasts going for you
10:38
all as well and the more people that
10:40
listen to it it encourages me more to do
10:42
it as well so until tomorrow's episode
