This video explains whether garlic and onion sets can still be planted in autumn and what results to expect.
It covers timing, soil conditions, overwintering growth and how autumn planting affects bulb development. Planting at the right time helps produce stronger plants and reliable harvests.
Suitable for gardens, raised beds, containers and small growing spaces.
Suitable for UK and international gardeners in temperate climates.

Is it too late to plant garlic and
0:03
onions in September for winter? Well,
0:07
the answer is no. Welcome to Gardening
0:10
with Ben. We're going to talk about
0:11
planting your garlic and your onions
0:14
this month, ready for winter and for
0:18
harvesting next year. So yeah, this
0:22
month we need to start concentrating on
0:25
looking around ready for planting our
0:27
garlic and getting our onions. The best
0:31
places to get your garlic and your
0:32
onions. They're usually from a garden
0:34
center or from a DIY store. They often
0:39
sell them in little bags with the sets
0:43
of onions. And also you usually get
0:46
about three garlics in a bag or two and
0:51
then you plant them. Don't do what I
0:53
thought in my first year and when I got
0:55
the garlic I thought what you only get
0:58
two garlics to plant. Nope. You split
1:00
them up into the cloves and then you
1:02
plant the cloves individually. Now the
1:05
best time to plant your garlic is
1:06
usually around October time to get it in
1:10
the ground. The reason why we plant it
1:12
then is because it needs the cold
1:14
weather to help it split and to help to
1:17
form the garlic bulb itself. So what you
1:21
need to be doing this month in September
1:23
is preparing your beds ready for
1:26
planting them. When I say preparing
1:28
them, it means obviously you've grown
1:30
stuff in the beds throughout the summer
1:32
period and it will have taken a lot of
1:34
the nutrition away from the ground. So,
1:37
you need to enhance the nutrition in the
1:39
ground either by adding compost, adding
1:41
fertilizer, adding food into the ground
1:44
to help give some nutrition back to
1:47
growing the plants again. So, get them
1:50
all dug over, get it all weeded, get it
1:53
all looking fresh, ready for planting
1:55
out at the end of September, beginning
1:58
of October. Now, we're going to be
2:00
planting ours pretty soon, but we need
2:03
to get our beds ready and get them all
2:05
sorted and tidied. We're going to be
2:07
revamping our a lotment this month and
2:09
getting it all looking a lot better cuz
2:11
it's looking a bit derelictked at the
2:12
moment after the summer that we've had.
2:15
But yeah, we're going to be freshening
2:17
it up, getting it all prepared, and
2:19
getting it ready for growing the garlic.
2:21
Now, obviously, when you're buying the
2:23
onions, you need to look for the autumn
2:26
sets, which they will probably won't
2:29
sell the normal sets at this time of
2:30
year in the uh garden centers, they'll
2:33
probably only sell the autumn sets. So,
2:36
you can either grow the sets or if
2:39
you're looking at growing them from
2:42
seed, you usually start the seed off
2:44
around December time if you're wanting
2:47
to grow them from seed. So have a look
2:49
around, see what you want to decide. I
2:51
once did a little experiment to see
2:54
which ones grew better from seed or from
2:56
set. The seed actually did better
2:58
themselves, but I find it a bit too much
3:01
hassle keeping them watered and
3:03
obviously it's a lot colder around that
3:05
time of year. So sometimes it's hard
3:07
getting water because they turn out
3:08
water off on site. So I tend to grow the
3:11
sets myself and get them in the ground.
3:13
But when you're getting them in the
3:14
ground, obviously your onions and your
3:16
garlics, make sure you net them because
3:18
the birds do love to pull the shoots up
3:22
from the bulb themselves. So protect
3:25
them with some netting until they're
3:27
strong enough. And then you can always
3:29
take the netting off before the snow
3:31
comes, etc. because the snow will just
3:33
weigh the netting down. So yeah, that is
3:36
how we usually prepare for growing our
3:39
garlic and our onions. I hope you found
3:42
this useful. Make sure you drop us a
3:44
follow to stay up to date with all our
3:46
videos and feel free to share it. Until
3:49
next time everyone. Remember, keep
3:51
smiling, keep shining, and keep
3:53
gardening.
