This recap shares what’s been happening on the garden and allotment, including key highlights and useful tips to help you stay prepared and organised during the quieter part of the growing year.
I go through plot progress, preparation work, maintenance jobs, and simple tasks that make a big difference later in the season. These practical ideas help you use the slower gardening period wisely so everything is ready when active growing begins again.
Ideal for both beginners and experienced gardeners looking for motivation, planning ideas, and straightforward advice they can apply to their own garden or allotment.

Growing With gardening with Ben hello
0:39
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:42
with a brand new podcast we're now in
0:45
March can you believe it February has
0:47
passed already even though it's a longer
0:50
month February was this month uh it's
0:53
still flown by but wow have we got a lot
0:57
done at my allotment and as we're now in
0:59
March we need to do
1:01
our February Roundup and share with you
1:04
everything that we've got done down at
1:06
the allotment ready before the next
1:09
episode which will be what jobs to do in
1:12
March so make sure you stay tuned for
1:13
tomorrow's episode and that will be out
1:16
early in the morning so yeah what have
1:20
we been up to down at the allotment in
1:22
February well it's been nonstop um the
1:25
weather has not been that bad to be
1:27
honest it's been awful today beginning
1:29
of March but it's not been a bad
1:31
February whatsoever and we've got
1:33
absolutely loads done I've near enough
1:36
got all my allotment ready now ready for
1:39
the growing season and I set myself a
1:42
mission and I've completed it I can't
1:45
believe how much I've actually done down
1:47
at my alotment I must have chucked at
1:49
least 30 bags of rubbish away this
1:52
winter from my alotment from how much
1:54
rubbish I've collected over the years
1:57
and over the past year down at the
1:59
alotment but it's certainly looking a
2:01
lot more better and yeah what have we
2:04
been doing well this month we've been
2:07
concentrating mainly on sorting out all
2:11
my fencing down the side of my plot as
2:13
it had been up a couple of years and you
2:16
know my DIY scills absolutely rubbish
2:19
and most of it had fell back down again
2:22
so we've put it in a lot stronger out
2:24
and it should theoretically last quite a
2:27
few years but we'll see about that so
2:30
all back up it's all nicely fastened
2:33
together and we've sorted out all my
2:35
flower borders as well down the sides of
2:36
my plot as my plot is higher than the
2:40
neighbor's plot so it
2:43
had a lot of the soil had dropped out of
2:46
it so we've put a proper wooden border
2:49
down the side to hold the soil in and
2:51
we've also filled them all back up with
2:54
fresh compost so that we can plant some
2:57
summer bulbs and we can plant lots of
2:59
flowers down the side of it now I've
3:00
been out and purchased lots of gladioli
3:04
uh corns they're not bulbs they call
3:05
corns so we picked up a load of gladiola
3:08
icons from our local B&Q because they
3:12
ran out in other places so I've been out
3:14
and got some from B&Q and we're going to
3:18
be planting them this month down the
3:20
sides of my plot so obviously they'll
3:22
need to be along my fencing so that I
3:24
can fasten them to them once the flowers
3:26
appear here because the flowers do get
3:28
top heavy so the new need something to
3:30
fasten on to so hopefully if all them
3:33
gladiol eyes grow well they'll look
3:35
absolutely fantastic and the bees again
3:37
we'll love them down there so we've
3:40
sorted all that out so we've got all
3:42
them to plant and we need to start
3:43
looking at getting
3:45
some perennial flowers that will keep
3:48
growing back year after year cuz the
3:50
more perennials I have the less I have
3:52
to buy in the future because they'll
3:54
just keep coming back year after year so
3:56
I'm looking at getting some like
3:57
lavenders and maybe heavers down the
3:59
side
4:00
but we'll see we'll have a look around
4:02
but obviously we'll still grow the
4:03
annuals which will be like
4:05
sunflowers and geraniums andun and stuff
4:09
like that to add lots more flow to them
4:12
so we've got all them sorted so that was
4:14
one of my big main jobs what I wanted to
4:16
do as I've not sorted out my flower
4:18
borders for quite a long time so I've
4:21
obviously got my border at the front of
4:23
the plot and I've got my border when I
4:25
first walk onto the plot but the main
4:26
border on my plot has not been looked
4:29
after really so we've put quite a lot of
4:31
time and effort and money into sorting
4:34
that out and I will be spending a lot
4:35
more money towards the end of the year
4:38
because I want to have spring bulbs all
4:39
the way down the sides of the plots so
4:42
I'm going to be purchasing so many
4:43
tulips higher Sims and daffodil to go
4:48
all the way down the plot to make it
4:49
look nice for next spring so make sure
4:51
you come back next spring and check out
4:52
my Instagram and see all the pictures on
4:55
there if you're not following my
4:56
Instagram do give it a follow because we
4:57
do Post lots of pictures on there it's
5:00
called gardening with
5:01
Ben so we've sorted out all that what
5:04
else have we sorted out this month we
5:06
have been sorting out getting all my
5:09
beds fixed back together and all the
5:11
pathways sorted again something that I
5:14
haven't done for a few years uh like a
5:18
few years ago what I did I took out all
5:20
the beds and I rebuilt them all from
5:22
scratch and basically that is what I've
5:24
done again this year I've taken them all
5:26
up and rebuild them all because some of
5:28
the wood was rot on some of them so I
5:30
had to take all them up and they'd come
5:33
unfastened so they were trip hazards all
5:36
the paths were not level anymore because
5:39
of me walking on them and the black
5:42
membrane had all had it what was down in
5:45
between the paths so yeah I completely
5:47
stripped the plot back and rebuilt it
5:50
all from scratch so that has been a job
5:54
and a half and for my Pathways I've got
5:57
two paths what a Paving slabs so nice to
6:01
walk on and they won't get muddy on them
6:03
and the rest of the paths are all wood
6:05
chip as we had a load of wood chip
6:07
delivered to our allotment site so I've
6:09
got loads and loads of wood chip paths
6:12
all over the place I've still got a bit
6:13
left to do I'm just waiting on some M
6:15
getting delivered and then all the paths
6:18
will be finished as well so it is going
6:20
to look pretty Posh this year my plot
6:22
and the amount of time and effort I've
6:25
put into this winter will certainly
6:28
hopefully pay off the next main jobs
6:30
over the next month will be to repaint
6:33
all my beds and getting them looking
6:36
brand new again well they won't look
6:37
brand new but they look a lot nicer than
6:40
they actually are and we usually paint
6:43
them green even though it does wash off
6:45
after a bit of time it does make them
6:47
look nicer for the time being and for
6:49
the summer and it helps stop the wood
6:52
from rotting as fast so we'll be getting
6:54
all them painted and looking spot on and
6:58
another job will be to dig over all the
7:01
beds as well which I'm planning on doing
7:04
throughout the March time so March time
7:07
we will be painting all the beds and
7:09
getting them dug over I've also bought a
7:11
SI as well cuz I want to save the soil
7:13
cuz there's a lot of stones in it so I'm
7:15
going to try and save as many stones out
7:17
as possible and try and get rid of them
7:19
uh just to make it better for growing in
7:22
and we're also going to add some
7:23
nutrients into the soil we're going to
7:25
have some manure into it we're going to
7:27
add some compost into it which just
7:29
going to improve the soil and hopefully
7:32
improve our planting yes we are spending
7:34
a lot of money on it this year and it's
7:36
probably cheaper to buy the vegetables
7:37
from the supermarket but they won't
7:39
taste as nice and hopefully once you're
7:42
done it will last for a few years and
7:44
hopefully we'll get a good crop of stuff
7:46
and I don't care about if it costs
7:49
cheaper to buy it from a supermarket
7:51
sometimes it's about the enjoyment of
7:53
being outside in the garden in the fresh
7:55
air and being with nature and that's
7:59
what I get and it's so good for my mind
8:01
while I'm down there and obviously I
8:04
live in a flat on my own so it's good to
8:06
get out and about and every day when I'm
8:08
off work I'm always down there come rain
8:10
or shine I was down there this morning
8:12
when it absolutely chuing it down but I
8:14
got out of the flat and out and about
8:17
down to the alotment for a bit so yeah
8:19
it has been a busy of February and again
8:22
I'm very impressed with what I'm doing
8:24
this month is going to be even more busy
8:27
because we've got all the seeds to start
8:29
in this month which I do enjoy that's my
8:31
favorite time of the year hence the
8:33
reason why I get all these jobs done on
8:36
my allotment for the winter because
8:39
March April time May time the busy
8:43
months with sewing seeds and potting on
8:45
and getting them all ready to plant out
8:47
and that's the exciting part uh the
8:50
winter period is the hard work I always
8:53
class it has so yeah we have got it
8:56
already and that's why I always say to
8:58
start getting your allotment ready for
9:00
the year after from September October
9:03
onwards right through winter and just
9:05
keep on going and keep going down and
9:08
getting that work done and it pays off
9:10
like it has done for me and again
9:13
hopefully this year is going to be the
9:14
best year ever down there so that has
9:17
been what we've been up to in February
9:20
so like I said make sure you come back
9:22
for tomorrow's episode tomorrow's
9:23
episode going to be talking about all
9:25
the jobs which you need doing in March
9:27
in the garden alotment food areas and
9:30
flower areas so make sure you come back
