0:17
just starting out this podcast is for
0:20

0:23
tricks and techniques to make your
0:25
garden and alotment thve from planting
0:28
sewing and growing we will share all the
0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben I hope you're all
0:51
well and I hope you're all keeping busy
0:56
and yeah it's finally the weekend the
0:59
first first weekend of December so who's
1:03
going in the allotment or who's getting
1:05
ready for Christmas that is the question
1:08
or in the garden should I say as well
1:11
but yeah are you getting ready for
1:12
Christmas are you out writing your list
1:15
for Father Christmas or are you spending
1:17
it in doors staying warm and dry or are
1:21
you mad like me spending it in the
1:23
alotment so yeah as always we're going
1:27
to be giving you a Christmas joke of the
1:31
day for those that don't see them online
1:34
this is another place where you can
1:36
listen to them so unlucky for you or
1:39
lucky for you whichever way so today's
1:41
Christmas joke is why did The Gardener
1:45
plant mint at Christmas why did The
1:48
Gardener plant mint at Christmas because
1:51
he wanted a Minter
1:57
Wonderland why did the garden at Plum me
2:00
at Christmas because he wanted a Min
2:03
Wonderland there you are that's the best
2:05
you're going to get and there'll be
2:07
plenty more to come all the way up to
2:10
December so I hope you're enjoying these
2:12
daily Christmas
2:14
jokes so what are we talking about today
2:18
well in yesterday's episode we talked
2:20
all about the key tasks of getting you
2:23
alotment prepared and ready for the year
2:26
ahead I hope you found it useful and I
2:28
hope it gave you some enthusiasm and
2:31
encouragement into getting your Gardens
2:33
and allotments done so what are we going
2:36
to be doing at the allotment this
2:38
weekend for us down at the allotment
2:40
that is the question let me share with
2:43
you what our plans are for our allotment
2:46
and if it encourages you to do a bit in
2:47
your garden or allotments that's what I
2:50
want to hear from so yeah what are plans
2:54
well I need to go out and get some more
2:56
bird feed as they are rumaging
2:58
throughout throughout all my bird feed
3:00
eating loads which is a good sign it
3:03
shows that I'm feeding the birds and
3:05
encouraging them but obviously the
3:07
squirrels are taking some they're eating
3:09
it and I've seen a rat down at my
3:12
alotment as well so they're eating it as
3:13
well so I'm feeding all the wildlife
3:15
down there and obviously I'm feeding the
3:17
cat as well which we've got down at my
3:20
allotment but yeah I'll be feeding
3:22
filling up all my bird feeders and
3:24
getting them ready for the winter
3:26
because we have had a bit of cold
3:28
weather but not a load so the ground
3:30
isn't that much Frozen so birds can
3:32
still get worms and stuff from out of
3:34
the gardens but obviously looking after
3:37
the birds especially when it's cold and
3:39
they can't get anything out on the
3:40
ground it keeps them going and obviously
3:44
feeding them certain bird feed gives
3:46
them energy as well throughout the
3:47
winter months which is what they
3:50
want the next main job down at the
3:53
allotment this weekend well last weekend
3:56
I only went down on Sunday because I was
3:58
out celebrating Christmas parties but
4:01
yeah last weekend what I did was I
4:05
rearranged all my Loganberry Bush and
4:07
tied it in a better position so it
4:10
easier to get down around where my
4:12
strawberry beds are and I also tied up
4:15
all my new BlackBerry canes as well what
4:18
have been growing this year because
4:20
obviously the next year's blackberries
4:22
will grow on the canes which grew this
4:24
year and the same goes for Logan berries
4:27
the Logan berries will grow on the new
4:29
canes this year year so it's case is
4:31
tying them up and supporting them and
4:33
getting them all in place ready for the
4:35
year ahead so I did that very delicately
4:37
because I didn't want to break any of
4:39
the canes or damage any of them and
4:42
they're all tied to my fences and
4:44
supports so they're all sorted so my
4:47
main job this weekend is going to be
4:48
sorting out around where my strawberry
4:50
beds are and Tiding them all up and I'm
4:54
going to be trimming back any of the old
4:56
leaves what are on them what are dying
4:57
off or any disease Le
5:00
to stop them from like getting diseased
5:01
and spreading throughout the winter
5:03
months so I just give them a good trim
5:05
over the winter and I'll obviously cut
5:07
off any runners what are growing and
5:09
plant them up into the ground and make
5:12
sure they're well watered which
5:14
obviously there will be at this time yet
5:16
especially with the amount of rain that
5:17
we've had recently uh so it's just case
5:20
of keeping them watered into the ground
5:21
to make sure that they take but yeah we
5:23
planted about an extra 200 strawberry
5:26
plants the other month of my allotment
5:28
because last year I did get a good crop
5:31
so I've replaced a lot of the plants
5:33
I've filled tons of gaps in which were
5:35
all over in my Pol uh black membrane so
5:38
they're all spaced out equally so we
5:41
planted absolutely loads of strawberries
5:44
so I'm hoping for a fantastic crop next
5:46
year because my crop this year was
5:48
abysmal I wasn't happy with it uh either
5:51
the plants didn't do very well or the
5:54
birds ate them so we need to keep an eye
5:56
out and possibly protect them better
5:58
next year from any birds and squirrels
6:00
from eating them next year so we're
6:03
going to have to look into possibly
6:04
making a little structure or some uh
6:08
netting over them to stop anything from
6:10
coming down and getting them so we're
6:12
going to be Tiding all them up we're
6:14
also going to be Tiding all the paths
6:16
around my strawberry bed area so that
6:18
it's easy to get round and get down the
6:20
side of the bed so that I can reach over
6:23
and sort all them out we're also going
6:25
to be emptying my carrot bed what I
6:29
planted I started off while we I seed
6:32
all my carrots in this race planter in
6:34
my greenhouse and they all started
6:37
growing because they're high off the
6:39
ground so the carrot fly won't get them
6:41
and I thought oh I'm going to get some
6:43
decent carrots this year I forgot to
6:45
water them throughout the year didn't
6:47
I I just put them in a corner and forgot
6:50
about them and didn't water them so I'm
6:51
not expecting miracles from these
6:53
carrots but we're going to pull them all
6:55
up and we're going to see what carrots
6:56
we've got from them so make sure you
6:58
stay tuned for that YouTube episode
7:00
because you know me I'm very open and
7:02
honest I'll tell you if I've done
7:04
rubbish or I'll tell you if I've done
7:06
absolutely fantastic I share the truth I
7:09
don't hide from it uh not like some
7:11
gardeners will just say well we grew
7:13
these and probably bought them in the
7:16
supermarket and stuck them in the
7:19
ground but now we are open and honest
7:21
with how well we do with our growing so
7:24
we're going to be harvesting all
7:26
them and then possibly on Sunday we're
7:30
going to start with the renovation of my
7:33
shed and I'm excited for this because
7:35
I'm rubbish at DIY I've always admitted
7:38
that I'm absolutely terrible it looks
7:41
awful and I do a rubbish job but I enjoy
7:44
doing it and it's good fun so we're
7:47
going to be renovating the inside of my
7:49
shed this year last like I said last
7:51
year we spent the time on rebuilding all
7:54
the
7:54
outside sorting all the structure out
7:57
and everything like that this year we're
7:59
going to call concentrate on the inside
8:01
of the shed because I've got into making
8:04
my YouTube videos quite a lot now and I
8:06
absolutely love doing it so I'm going to
8:08
try and make a potting bench type thing
8:12
where I can film I can show what I'm
8:15
doing with a good backdrop to it so it
8:17
looks professional somehow
8:20
professional one day I'll be
8:22
professional one day I'll be famous keep
8:25
listening to these podcasts and maybe
8:26
one day I will be but yeah I want to
8:29
have a nice backdrop to it I want it to
8:31
look fantastic and
8:33
look like a proper little shed studio
8:36
type thing so I want to improve in my
8:38
shed and do that I also want to sort out
8:42
all my shelving tidy it all up I'm going
8:44
to paint all inside my shed make it all
8:47
look fresh and brand new I've got wooden
8:50
shelv in at the moment and it's
8:53
fantastic they're all cut to pieces I
8:55
can take them all off if I want to grow
8:57
anything underneath them so that um I
8:59
don't have to unscrew all the benches I
9:01
can just take them off of the supports
9:04
and take them out but what I'm going to
9:06
do is I'm going to possibly paint them
9:10
all and then I'm going to put some
9:13
pooline over them I've got a load of
9:15
pooline in my shed and I'm possibly
9:18
going to put polyene over them so that
9:20
when I'm watering my plants it won't
9:23
give the wood chance of rotting if you
9:25
get me it's going to protect it so that
9:27
the water will just run off and and then
9:30
the shed will grow uh not the shed will
9:33
grow the shelves will be protected for
9:36
years to comeing hopefully last plenty
9:38
of years so I'm going to do all that and
9:41
I need to sort out a lot of my plant
9:42
pots and my um all my seed trays I need
9:45
to get them all cleaned out and ready
9:48
and just sweep up and tidy up and burn
9:51
any old wood I need to start having
9:53
bonfires that's one thing I've not
9:55
started doing yet we need to start
9:56
having some bonfires down there and
9:58
getting rid of some of the old wood that
9:59
we've got down there so hopefully I'll
10:02
be starting to do the shed but uh I will
10:05
definitely be filming plenty of videos
10:07
down there in the shed showing you all
10:09
the transformation of what I'm getting
10:11
up to and you can follow along and see
10:14
how well I get up to so if you don't
10:15
follow my YouTube channel do give it a
10:17
follow and then you'll be able to see
10:19
how well my shed is actually coming
10:21
on and another job one weekend once it's
10:24
dry is probably to
10:30
spray all my fruit trees that's one
10:32
thing I want to do I want to spray them
10:33
all and get them all pretty much I put
10:38
like a winter wash on them and I'll also
10:41
put some sticky bands around them as
10:43
well to stop any insects from crawling
10:45
up and trying to damage the trees over
10:50
the summer periods so if you put them on
10:52
over winter it'll stop any insects from
10:54
hibernating in it and laying its eggs
10:57
and stuff like that but yeah that one
10:59
job I usually do every winter but
11:01
there's still a lot of leaves on my
11:02
cooking apple tree I'm guessing there'll
11:04
be a load more left uh come off it now
11:07
because it has been windy today and
11:09
awful when I've been recording this
11:12
episode so hopefully the leaves all all
11:15
dropped off so I'll have to tidy all
11:17
them leaves up as well and put them in
11:19
my compost heap so that they start
11:21
rotting down so yeah we've got a lot of
11:23
jobs to do down at the allotment
11:25
obviously I'm going to film a allotment
11:27
tour I didn't uh put one out this week I
11:30
did record it but I didn't put it out
11:32
it's a bit late putting it out now it's
11:34
bit pointless so I'm going to do an
11:35
allotment tour next week we'll start
11:37
doing all the videos again obviously you
11:39
are getting the daily jokes and yeah
11:43
we're going to get some more content
11:44
delivered to you over on the allotment
11:46
so I hope you're looking forward to all
11:48
that I'm trying to get as much content
11:50
