Sweet peas love an early start. Welcome
0:03
to Gardening with Ben. Now is the time
0:06
to be starting sweet peas off. Yes, the
0:09
flowers what keep on giving all summer
0:12
long. The more you cut them, the more
0:14
they'll produce the flowers. If you
0:16
leave the flowers on, they'll go to seed
0:18
and they'll stop producing the flowers.
0:20
So, sweet peas are great. They smell
0:22
absolutely divine. in the last of few
0:24
days in a vase and yeah you will have
0:28
great amounts of flowers on them. So now
0:33
is the time to be starting them. Now
0:35
I've got a little secret how I start my
0:37
sweet peas which do absolutely fantastic
0:40
and they do great for germination. Some
0:43
people struggle with germination of
0:45
sweet peas. Now, my little secret to
0:47
starting the sweet peas off and getting
0:50
100% germination is I get a Tupperware
0:53
box, put some kitchen roll in the
0:56
bottom, and then I put the sweet peas on
0:58
top, not in soil, just on top of the
1:01
kitchen roll. Then I'll spray them with
1:03
a sprayer, water sprayer, and moisten
1:06
them up. And then I close the Tupperware
1:08
lid. And that keeps them damp. It keeps
1:11
them moist. They might go a little tiny
1:13
bit moldy, but they will germinate. And
1:16
I've had 100% germination most times
1:19
when I've done it that way. And it
1:21
starts them off a lot faster. They'll be
1:23
germinating hopefully within a week. And
1:26
then once they've germinated, you can
1:27
get some tweezers, get your plant pots,
1:30
and plant them out. And then at least
1:31
you know which ones have germinated and
1:33
which ones will start growing. Now,
1:36
obviously once they start growing,
1:38
you'll need to keep them somewhere
1:40
warmish for the time being, but not
1:42
somewhere that's got not enough light
1:45
because they will go leggy and you don't
1:47
want them to go legg as then they won't
1:50
produce very good flowers on them. So,
1:52
it's perfect for doing that way. That is
1:55
a great way of germinating your sweet
1:57
peas. Now, once they start growing, when
2:00
they get to about 6 to 8 in, then you
2:04
need to nip them off. The reason why we
2:05
nip them off is because it helps them
2:07
bush out. And the bushier that they will
2:09
be, the more flowers that they will be
2:12
on it. If you bush them out, the flowers
2:14
might be a tiny bit smaller, but you'll
2:16
get more flowers on them. If you leave
2:18
them to grow without nipping them out,
2:20
you might get bigger flowers on them.
2:22
So, it's up to you at the end of the
2:24
day. The choice is yours. But, like I
2:27
said, the more you keep cutting the
2:29
flowers, the more they'll keep
2:31
producing. And sweet peas are absolutely
2:34
gorgeous. They smell so nice and they're
2:37
great to have in the house as a cut
2:40
flower or to give a friend or family.
2:43
And yeah, they will appreciate sweet
2:45
peas. Now, there's many varieties out
2:47
there. There's a perennial version as
2:49
well which will grow back every single
2:50
year. I've never tried the perennial
2:52
version myself, but yeah, there's so
2:54
many. And the best thing about sweet
2:56
peas is that when it's coming to the end
2:57
of summer, you can let a few go to seed
3:00
and you can save the seeds for next year
3:03
and it'll save you a lot of money cuz
3:05
you don't get too many in a packet. So
3:07
yeah, if you're wanting to save money,
3:09
save the seed for the year after. So I
3:12
hope you found that useful everybody.
3:13
And as always, remember, keep smiling,
3:16
keep shining, and keep gardening with
