0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:28
for a brand new episode the day is
0:31
Saturday it's absolutely glorious
0:33
outside as I'm recording this but I've
0:37
not been to the alotment today as I've
0:39
only just woke up basically from my
0:41
night shift and I'm absolutely shattered
0:45
and yeah it's going to be a relaxing day
0:47
today as I tend to try and stay relaxed
0:51
when I'm working nights because even
0:54
though you get into the pattern of
0:55
sleeping you're never really fully
0:58
energized so will'll be having a rest
1:01
today from the allotment but I have just
1:04
uh shared on my Facebook page all the
1:07
jobs which need doing in the allotment
1:09
and garden for April so if you're not
1:12
following me on Facebook go over and
1:14
have a look and you will be able to see
1:16
all the jobs which need doing in the
1:18
garden this month and obviously we've
1:20
talked about it in one of our podcasts
1:22
recently so if you want to listen to
1:24
that episode just go back through the
1:26
podcast and you will find that episode
1:29
on what jobs need to be done and then
1:30
we'll be sending out all the seeds that
1:32
need to be planted in April as well
1:35
tomorrow so we've got plenty ahead of us
1:38
coming
1:39
up so what have I been up to today well
1:42
not much really um I've just been across
1:45
to Tesco and this will make me laugh
1:48
this because I shared on my Facebook
1:50
page this morning a picture of an
1:54
ostrich saying that you're only going
1:56
across to the shops for some milk but
1:58
you end up coming back with plants and
2:01
that is basically what I've done and at
2:04
our Tesa they've reduced the loaded
2:06
plants to Half Price that obviously
2:09
weren't selling or they've not looked
2:11
after properly and yeah they just need a
2:13
bit of TLC and they'll come back to life
2:17
pretty good so we've picked up two more
2:19
plants to plant on Tuesday when we're
2:23
possibly down there or it might be
2:25
Wednesday depending on how I feel after
2:27
I finished my last night shift on
2:30
us but we'll see if we manage to get
2:32
down or not either way I've brought them
2:35
into my flat and I've put them in some
2:37
water to drink because they're probably
2:38
not being watered for weeks so hopefully
2:41
we can get some life back into them and
2:43
get them growing and waking them up and
2:46
the best thing where is that theyve got
2:47
some shrubs in there as well and they're
2:49
called dormant shrubs and they're
2:52
definitely dormant because they've not
2:54
been watering
2:57
them but yeah uh they reduced them as
3:00
well so we'll see if we manage to get
3:04
them to grow or not and they are the
3:07
broom which I've had uh I bought some
3:10
yellow ones and these ones look white
3:13
from what I can see from the flowers
3:15
that I've died on it so we'll see if we
3:18
manage to get them growing or not
3:20
because they would look nice in between
3:22
my yellow ones uh so we'll see hopefully
3:25
they they are still alive and hopefully
3:28
we'll get them growing because
3:31
plenty of color I can't complain that
3:34
and I'm certainly putting a lot of color
3:36
into my plot this year I can't believe
3:38
how many plants I've actually bought um
3:41
it's unbelievable like I've bought all
3:43
my summer bulbs this year I've purchased
3:47
some heavers
3:50
hydranges I've purchased some catus some
3:54
honeysuckle some fuches some lily bulbs
4:01
uh I've not got my lavender yet I still
4:03
need to get my lavender but yeah I can't
4:06
believe how many flower plants I've
4:07
actually purchased this year and I've
4:10
still got things on my radar uh I've
4:13
obviously still got my lavender to get
4:16
which I need to keep an eye out for uh
4:18
hopefully we'll get some possibly next
4:21
month now it'll be uh but hopefully we
4:24
can get some and get that
4:27
planted then hopefully
4:30
I've also I've always fancied a Rosy
4:33
dendrum uh and obviously planting Rosy
4:36
dendrum they need to be in acious soil
4:39
as well bit like your blue bra and your
4:41
aelas so I've even got to test the soil
4:45
first to see if it's
4:47
suitable or I plant it in a plant pot
4:50
and sink it into the ground in arous
4:52
compost and just do it that way as
4:55
that's an easier way to do but uh
4:57
obviously rosed dendrum can grow pretty
5:00
big and wild but obviously if you keep
5:03
them in a pot they'll keep pretty good
5:06
really so yeah I've always wanted a
5:08
Rosie dendrum so we'll see if we can get
5:11
one of those they have got some at my
5:13
Supermarket across the road so I'm going
5:15
to add that to my list now so we've got
5:17
rosed dendrum on my list and we've got
5:20
lavender on my list as well so yeah it's
5:23
going to be pretty crazy my plot once it
5:26
all gets growing and once it all gets
5:28
looking good I really can't wait for all
5:30
this color that we are getting on our
5:32
plot and how well it's going to look
5:34
over these years and this is just the
5:36
first year that I'm getting into flowers
5:38
who knows what it'll be like next year
5:40
when I purchase even more plants because
5:43
like I said I am growing loads and loads
5:45
of flower seeds and they're just
5:47
starting to germinate my cunder is just
5:49
starting to germinate uh I've not seen
5:52
any others germinating yet but hopefully
5:55
this warm weather today will really get
5:57
them going I did give them a good
5:58
watering yesterday y so hopefully
6:01
fingers crossed when I go down there
6:02
next I'll start seeing seeds popping
6:05
through and germinating and growing and
6:07
getting
6:09
going so hopefully uh but like I said i'
6:12
planted a load of flower seeds and but
6:15
the main aim is to get as many actual
6:17
flower plants growing as possible that
6:20
are perennials and obviously perennial
6:22
means that they'll grow back year after
6:24
year and hopefully with such success so
6:28
yeah hopefully we get some decent
6:30
looking plants over the years and lots
6:33
and lots of color and it'll take a lot
6:36
of Maintenance obviously keep looking
6:38
after him and everything which I'm up
6:40
for doing now that I've sorted a lot of
6:42
the plot out and it's all in shape and
6:44
all in action is not much that I need to
6:47
do now I've literally built all my beds
6:51
and all the framework and stuff like
6:53
that I've still got a lot of work to do
6:56
at the top of my plot which is going to
6:58
take quite a bit of time
7:00
that might be maze jobs uh to get all
7:03
the top of my plot sorted and looking
7:05
good uh so we'll see how we get on with
7:07
that um but April's job is to paint it
7:11
all uh this month and obviously I
7:13
painted at least half of it this month
7:17
uh this weekend uh so that's all looking
7:20
good now and hopefully it'll just need
7:23
one coat uh but like I said this one
7:26
coat paint never is actually one coat
7:28
it's usually multiple
7:30
um but we can always just go over bits
7:32
that need a little uh bit more paint on
7:35
them and get that
7:37
done so it's going to be a pretty big
7:41
transformation on my plot this year and
7:44
the council have like a allotment
7:48
competition and I've entered it years
7:51
ago and I came like second for on our
7:54
site uh I think my dad beat
7:57
me but um I'm I'm really tempted to
8:00
actually enter this year because the
8:02
amount of work and effort that I've put
8:04
into it and how well it is actually
8:07
looking I am pleased with myself and I'm
8:10
not sounding bigheaded but I am actually
8:12
pleased with myself with how much it's
8:14
actually looking and how well the
8:17
allotment is doing it's just so
8:21
impressive with how it's looking uh I
8:23
really can't believe how well it's come
8:26
on this year and like I said this still
8:29
loads more left to do and I still need
8:31
to sort around my pond for plants around
8:34
that uh somebody commented on one of my
8:37
posts on Facebook and gave me some ideas
8:40
of plants that I need to put around to
8:43
uh attract NES as obviously NES would be
8:46
good to the plot as well I don't know if
8:48
they slugs or not but uh the more
8:51
Wildlife I'm getting down to the plot
8:53
the better uh as well as Mr ratti
8:57
obviously but yeah hopefully we get
8:59
plenty done and hopefully it all comes
9:02
along really really well and it's just a
9:06
case of waiting now to start sewing
9:08
actual vegetables outside because
9:11
there's you don't want to be planting
9:13
them outside while it's still chance of
9:15
frost uh you might as well just wait a
9:18
couple of weeks until after the chance
9:19
of frost has passed and when you know
9:22
it's safe like yet it's been absolutely
9:25
glorious Sunshine here in Sheffield
9:27
today well it has since I've work up at
9:30
2:00ish uh it's been absolutely glorious
9:33
and but the obviously I working last
9:36
night and the temperature dipped really
9:38
cold last night so things will get
9:40
affected and I've seen quite a few posts
9:44
on people posting pictures of potatoes
9:47
that have got that uh uh leaves are
9:51
blackened on them and that's because the
9:53
Frost has got them if your potatoes are
9:57
starting to send the shoots up out of
9:59
the soil you need to cover them with
10:01
soil keep them covered until that chance
10:04
of frost has passed or it will get the
10:08
top of the potato shoots and uh kill
10:12
them or damage them and you don't want
10:15
that to happen definitely not so you got
10:18
to keep your potato plants covered up
10:20
until it's actually safe for them to
10:22
grow out of the soil hence the reason
10:25
why I plant them quite deep so that uh
10:28
by the time they do start popping
10:29
through hopefully the chance of frost
10:32
has passed and hopefully you get some
10:35
good produce that's the main thing so
10:37
yeah it's all about trying different
10:40
things this year and the amount of time
10:43
that I'm spending down there is
10:45
unbelievable and like I keep saying I'm
10:47
so ahead of time on my allotment usually
10:51
I'm pushing for time at the last minute
10:54
uh one year I took all my beds up uh
10:57
like in February and then I dug it all
11:00
over and relay all my beds and I would
11:02
pushing time towards the end to get it
11:05
all complete but it's literally all
11:07
ready now just for planting straight
11:09
into obviously I still need to do all
11:11
the painting and everything but it is
11:13
all ready for
11:14
planting so I'm happy with how well
11:17
we've done and last year my plot
11:19
neighbor he was ahead of me and this
11:22
year I'm just like saying come on you
11:24
need to get yourself down here you need
11:26
to catch up with me I'm well ahead of
11:28
you now I'm getting in there uh you
11:30
really do need to catch up with your
11:32
gardening so which keeps making us laugh
11:35
because obviously was in front of me
11:37
last year but obviously I weren't
11:39
spending as much time down at the plot
11:41
last year because I was working 9 till 5
11:44
so I didn't get as much time whereas I
11:45
get four days off now uh sometimes five
11:49
when I'm on nights as uh I go to bed on
11:52
that night shift in the afternoon so I
11:54
get to spend five days down there so I'm
11:56
just looking forward to Summer now and
11:58
spending at absolutely loads time in the
12:00
Glorious sunshine and as the mornings
12:03
get lighter the earlier I'll be going
12:05
down on the allotment as early as
12:08
possible so that I get as much done and
12:10
completed as possible so yeah next week
12:14
it's going to be a very busy week um
12:17
usually I pop to my parents for few
12:20
drinks before I go to the plot not
12:22
alcoholic just a couple of coffees to
12:24
catch up with them but they're uh away
12:27
this week so I will be able to go
12:31
straight down to the alotment rather
12:33
than spending an hour and a half talking
12:35
to them and get even more stuff done so
12:38
hopefully we'll get all the painting
12:40
done we'll get all the new beds built at
12:43
the top of my plot and then hopefully
12:45
we'll start moving on to doing the top
12:48
of my plot uh I'm I'm possibly going to
12:52
get that done quite fast uh we've just
12:55
got to see how messy it is because like
12:58
I said everybody's got a Dumping Ground
13:00
And The Dumping Ground is at the top of
13:02
my plot I've just been moving stuff
13:05
every year to the top of my plot and 16
13:08
years worth of rubbish is all at the top
13:10
of my plot rather than take it away I've
13:12
just been moving it up the plot and I
13:14
wish I had not done that now I wish I
13:17
have took a couple of bags of rubbish
13:18
back home with me every time I go to the
13:20
plot but no I've been just shoving it
13:23
further up and yeah all the poly tunnels
13:27
ready the poly tunnels ready for the
13:29
fantastic display that we're going to
13:30
have this year of melons tomatoes
13:35
cucumbers I might try I'm going to grow
13:37
some carrots indoors this year in tubs
13:41
uh we're going to try Peppers we're
13:43
going to try chilies and yeah I'm on a
13:45
health kick at the moment uh trying to
13:48
lose a bit of Timber what I've gained
13:50
since first lockdown uh and I've never
13:53
been back to the gym since so I'm eating
13:56
a lot healthier and as part of my
13:59
healthy food it's tweet peppers and
14:02
peppers are quite expensive to buy so if
14:04
I can get growing some decent Peppers
14:06
then that'll save me tons of money uh
14:09
the more stuff on my diet list that I
14:11
can grow the better and adapt my diet
14:15
around it really uh around the healthy
14:16
food so I expect to be seeing lots of
14:19
selfies of my
14:22
apps not my man boobs but my
14:26
pecs on Instagram and stuff but yeah
14:29
it's going to be good and I hope that
14:32
you had a good Saturday today and
14:35
definitely make use of that Sunday have
14:37
a look through your list of jobs what
14:39
you created tick off the ones that you
14:41
managed to complete and yeah go and
14:44
smash Sunday out and get all them jobs
14:48
finished and completed and see how you
14:50
get on so until next time remember keep
