0:57

0:59
quite a few to listen to as they drop on
1:02
a daily basis as I know people like to
1:05
listen to them and someone once said to
1:07
me they said um why don't you create
1:09
longer episodes and sometimes I find it
1:14
too hard to find stuff to talk about too
1:16
much really because I just love these
1:19
short little episodes and I'm sure
1:20
people prefer the short little episodes
1:23
uh let me know if you would like longer
1:25
episodes or not as I would like feedback
1:28
on my podcasts I've had a lot of good
1:31
feedback back about the quality of the
1:32
sound it sounds so much better for you
1:35
all and you're enjoying the the better
1:38
quality and obviously the investment
1:41
that I put into this microphone
1:44
£45 so it's not a cheap microphone it's
1:48
a very good one but like I said
1:50
everything that I get from these
1:51
podcasts I put back into sharing stuff
1:54
with you and the tips and advice and I
1:58
do appreciate you all and thank you for
2:00
my gardening journey and as I said over
2:03
the next few podcasts and episodes I'm
2:05
going to be sharing tips and advice on
2:09
getting started on an lotman tips just
2:12
general tips and advice and also tips
2:15
and advice on what I do to try and get
2:18
better vegetables
2:20
and get a better quality of
2:23
vegetable So today we're going to be
2:25
talking about growing pumpkins yes pumpk
2:29
pumpkins everybody loves to see how big
2:33
they can grow a pumpkin and not last
2:37
year but the year before I managed to
2:40
grow quite a big pumpkin myself and get
2:43
a quite a heavy one it was that big that
2:48
I took it to my local pub where I do my
2:51
quiz night and they made pumpkin soup
2:53
for
2:54
everybody and it was absolutely
2:57
delicious like I said a lot of the stuff
2:59
that I grow sometimes I give it away and
3:03
share it out with other people as I
3:05
don't get to eat it all myself rather
3:08
than it go to waste I'd like other
3:10
people to enjoy it so we got this
3:13
massive pumpkin the other year and I'm
3:16
hoping to try and get another big one
3:19
this year and we are going to give it a
3:22
good go and the way that you get a good
3:26
siiz pumpkin is that obviously they need
3:29
the pollination for the pollination of
3:31
the flower uh to get the pumpkin growing
3:35
in the first place but it's obviously
3:37
down to keep feeding them on a regular
3:41
basis I'll feed mine once twice a week
3:45
get by giving it some plant food or
3:47
tomite as obviously the pumpkin needs
3:51
the food to help make it grow and
3:54
obviously it needs its water as well but
3:56
you've got to be careful with watering
3:58
pumpkins as you can cause base rot on
4:01
the stalk so sometimes the best thing to
4:04
do is stick plant pot at the side of it
4:06
in the ground and water into the plant
4:09
pot that way it Waters down into the
4:12
roots rather than watering the stem
4:15
where it can cause the rotting of the
4:17
stem and then if the stem rots off then
4:19
you've lost the full plant which you
4:21
don't want whatsoever you need to
4:23
protect it at all costs and get it good
4:26
and
4:27
growing now another thing is that
4:30
sometimes if you wanted a big big
4:32
pumpkin it's best not to grow many
4:35
pumpkins on the plant because if there's
4:37
like four or five pumpkins on the plant
4:40
the plant doesn't know which one to put
4:42
all the effort into so you'll just get
4:44
like General smallish size pumpkins off
4:47
them whereas if you're wanted a big one
4:50
maximum pumpkins on the plan is about
4:54
two at least two or three and then you
4:57
will get a good size pumpkin on it
5:01
obviously I've been saying about feeding
5:03
the pumpkin I've fed it I'm feeding it
5:07
some uh produce called boost by Westland
5:11
I've just created a video on that it
5:13
should be on my YouTube either today or
5:16
in a couple of days so stay tuned for
5:18
that and I'll show you what I've made
5:21
and how I look after my pumpkins I've
5:23
also put some chicken feed chicken
5:25
pellets around him as well as chicken
5:28
pellets break down over for a few months
5:31
they'll last about 3 months so I'll put
5:34
them down a couple of times up until the
5:37
rip and you've got to be careful with
5:39
like chicken pallets because if you get
5:42
them on the leaves they'll burn the
5:43
leaves and you'll end up burning the
5:45
plant so you need to make sure they're
5:47
around the base of the plant not too
5:49
close to the stem as I say you don't
5:52
want to burn the stem so just place them
5:54
around the bottom and when it rains it
5:57
will water them and feed them at the
5:59
same same time so that's another good
6:01
way to keep them fed and
6:04
growing another good tip what I did as
6:07
well last year it's that as pumpkins
6:09
grow they'll end up sitting on the soil
6:12
and you don't want that you want the
6:15
pumpkins to be sat on something because
6:18
if they sat on the soil they could get
6:20
wet they could get damp they could rot
6:23
and that is the last thing that you want
6:25
to happen so what I do is I've got some
6:28
old roof tiles
6:30
the pieces are slight and I just rest
6:32
the pumpkin on the slight so that it's
6:34
not touching the soil that way it'll
6:37
stop it not not let it rot and you will
6:41
get a good pumpkin and it just lifts it
6:45
off the ground a bit better so then
6:47
hopefully it protects it and you'll get
6:50
a beautiful
6:51
pumpkin obviously pumpkins are usually
6:54
ready around the end of October the
6:57
beginning of November
7:00
and you don't want to leave them on the
7:02
plant when the frost is due if the frost
7:05
is due it would cause the pumpkin to
7:09
either rot or explode and that is the
7:12
last thing you want so make sure you're
7:14
keeping on on them temperatures as well
7:17
obviously we're safe around now because
7:18
we're not going to get Frost now
7:20
hopefully or
7:22
snow but yeah stay checking of those
7:26
temperatures towards the end of October
7:28
November as you don't want them to get
7:30
Frost and go mushy so when it's about
7:35
time cut them off pick them off store
7:38
them in a cool place not a hot place
7:41
cool place as again it can cause them to
7:44
rot if it's hot so store them somewhere
7:47
safe so that is our tips for growing
7:50
pumpkins make sure you feed them on a
7:52
regular basis I I'll give them food
7:56
twice a week also put some chicken pets
7:59
around the B to give them uh feed over a
8:01
time and to improve the soil and look
8:05
after them give them your full attention
8:08
keep an IR talk to them talk to your
8:11
plants say come on pumpkin grow
8:14
big you must think I'm mad but it does
8:18
work trust me so like I said I've got a
8:22
YouTube video coming out on my pumpkins
8:25
and showing you how I've done my
8:27
pumpkins so stay tuned for that if
8:29
you're not following me on YouTube do
8:30
give me a follow there's lots of new
8:32
videos coming out at the moment and I
8:34
hope that you enjoyed it I'll start
8:36
sharing lots of photos of my pumpkins on
8:38
my Instagram as well so that you can
8:40
stay tuned and see how big we can
8:42
actually grow a pumpkin this year
8:44
hopefully we'll get a Whopper fingers
8:46
crossed and hopefully I'll be sharing it
8:48
with my local pub again so they can make
8:49
me some delicious soup so stay tuned for
8:52
that so until next time's episode
