Do your sweetcorn get attacked by rats, mice and squirrels? If so, watch this tip and you will stop them from eating them
0:10
So welcome to Gardening with Ben. I'm Gardening with Ben and we're going to be showing you how we stop the squirrels and the mice and the rats from eating all the sweetcorn
0:22
As I've had this happen in the past, you leave them for a few days and they've stripped the lot of them
0:28
Now this is an easy little task but you've got to make sure you do it at the right time so that you don't not pollinate your sweetcorn. So let's have a look
0:37
So as you can see the sweetcorn is looking really healthy. It's starting to turn brown which is when we get our little contraption to protect them
0:47
So what do we do to protect our sweetcorn? What we do is we put bottles over them. That will stop the mice and the squirrels from eating them
0:56
We have done this for the last five years and no sweetcorn has been eaten. But you've got to wait until the tassels have gone brown which means they're getting ready to ripen
1:07
Which means they start to send the smell out to the squirrels and the rats and the mice and they go, come on, I'm getting ready, it's time for you to eat me
1:15
So that is when you cover them up as obviously you need to wait until they've pollinated and created the kernels. So you don't want to be covering them up, the tassels, before then as the tassels are what help the pollination
1:29
So yeah, that is all you need to do. Just get some bottles and cover your sweetcorn cobs up and it will protect them until they are ready
