tricks and techniques to make your

0:28

0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the Alum so sit back
0:40
grab a brute and enjoy today's
0:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben wow it's Saturday
0:53
already where has this week gone it's
0:56
absolutely flown by well it certainly
0:59
has been a cold week week hasn't it but
1:02
fingers crossed we'll be able to get to
1:04
the allotment today depending if it
1:06
snowed or not when I've recorded this I
1:09
don't
1:10
know but yeah hopefully it's not snowed
1:13
and hopefully I can get down to the
1:15
allotment well what are we planning on
1:18
doing this weekend well I'm planning on
1:24
doing all my strawberry beds area and
1:29
round near where all
1:34
my formless black Brees are growing all
1:37
my Great Vines I'm going to be sorting
1:40
out all around them which is going to be
1:43
a pretty big job as this probably will
1:47
last me the most of the weekend to be
1:48
honest uh but we'll have to see
1:52
and I basically want to get all my
1:56
blackbery canes tied up fasten to the F
1:58
fence supported and yeah get all my
2:03
strawberry beds uh trimmed back get all
2:06
the old leaves off what are dying off or
2:10
gone funny on them just freshen them all
2:13
up and make them look ready for next
2:16
year so that's going to be pretty big
2:19
job in itself and then I'm going to tidy
2:21
up all my paths sort out all that and
2:25
yeah that area should then be done after
2:28
that and then hopefully if I get all
2:30
that done this weekend then next week's
2:33
tasks I'll be starting off to get my
2:36
shed ready for the massive revamp which
2:40
I'm looking forward to as I need to
2:42
start looking at ideas on how I want to
2:45
make it look on the inside I want to
2:47
Spruce it up make it look good as I want
2:51
to use it as an area where I can start
2:54
filming videos in there doing
2:57
demonstrations sharing Me sewing my seat
2:59
seeds and transplanting all my plants
3:02
and just doing like weekly videos in
3:05
there keeping you all up to date with
3:07
everything that's growing and what's not
3:09
growing as you know I'm an honest
3:12
Gardener but yeah I'm looking forward to
3:14
getting all that done and getting it all
3:17
spruced up as it do need a lot of work
3:20
doing on the inside but I am going to
3:22
strip it all back and do it all a fresh
3:24
and make it look good for next year give
3:27
it all a pain brush out sweep down
3:30
and do any repairs that need to do into
3:32
the roof which uh one of the pieces is
3:34
missing so we need to repair the
3:37
roof we've got that to do and also I've
3:40
ordered some winter wash for my fruit
3:44
trees so hopefully I'll be able to get
3:46
that done soon I want to get them all
3:48
sprayed down I need to put some of that
3:51
green sticky tape around the trunk of
3:54
them to stop anything from crawling up
3:56
on them nesting on them over winter so
3:59
yeah yeah we've got plenty to keep us
4:01
going and obviously once I've done
4:04
inside my shed I'll be doing inside my
4:06
poly tunnel as that is one of my goals
4:10
for next year to start growing again in
4:12
my poly tunnel I'm going to continue
4:15
growing my tomatoes and cucumbers
4:17
outside because they do absolutely
4:19
fantastic they did really well but I'm
4:22
going to look at growing my some
4:25
melons and some peppers and some chilies
4:30
inside my polytonal next year now the
4:32
thing is with doing that is that I'm
4:34
going to have to look into setting up
4:36
irrigation for as obviously I won't be
4:40
able to go down to the allotment every
4:43
day of the summer as obviously I'm
4:47
working now Monday to Friday so I'll
4:49
only be down at weekends so I'm going to
4:51
have to look into irrigation for them
4:54
and I've done this once before I set up
4:58
a water B with drippers he did off it so
5:02
then they were dripping not fast but
5:05
like just a gentle drip every so often
5:08
and fill a water but up and it'll last
5:11
for ages so I'll either do that or I'll
5:15
use uh bags as I've used them in the
5:19
past and they're really good as well you
5:22
fasten the bag on to the side of the
5:24
poly tunnel and again it has drippers
5:26
leading from it and the uh you can like
5:29
twist them to the speed of the drip that
5:32
you want but yeah I think I might do
5:35
that again next year and obviously it
5:38
just keeps them water obviously it's not
5:40
a big water in just a gentle drip but
5:42
it's getting some water to the roots if
5:45
you get me so then at least it'll keep
5:46
them watered and obviously my dad will
5:49
pop down every so often to give stuff of
5:51
water for me cuz he's pretty good like
5:53
that but
5:56
hopefully we're going to get a lot of
5:58
stuff done this winter depending on the
6:01
weather obviously but soon I will
6:05
actually be able to sit back and relax
6:08
and not do anything cuz I don't think my
6:10
shed will take me a long time to do it
6:13
possibly it take me about a month to do
6:15
it all as obviously painting's a big job
6:18
and putting up new shelving and just
6:21
clearing out all the rubbish what's in
6:23
there as you don't realize how much
6:25
rubbish you do accumulate when you're
6:28
pottering around in the
6:30
shedlock you just end up with loads of
6:33
compost bags for that's one thing that
6:35
you end up with loads of compost bags
6:37
and Seed wrappers and stuff like that
6:40
and plastic
6:42
um seed um tags what you write on to say
6:47
what's in your seats and stuff like that
6:49
I tend to save them because you can use
6:51
both sides or you can samp paper it down
6:54
and write over it again and sometimes by
6:57
now it's washed off anyway by end of the
6:59
year
7:00
so then you can just use them again and
7:01
WR over them that's what I tend to
7:03
do so that is going to be my job for
7:07
this weekend sorting out my strawberries
7:09
and my blackberries as I mentioned
7:12
previously I want to build a pagoda on
7:15
my allotment not like a posh pagod um
7:19
it's basically going to be a few posts
7:22
fastened to my shed and going to have
7:25
wires down the side of my plot to
7:28
hopefully train all the Logan berries
7:31
all the black Brees all the Great Vines
7:33
along so that they're off of the ground
7:36
and hopefully away from predators but
7:40
knowing Mr squirrel he will climb along
7:42
the wires and he'll eat
7:45
everything but we can only try so I need
7:48
to start ordering some wires and getting
7:51
that sorted and work out how I'm going
7:53
to put the posts in without I'm falling
7:55
over because knowing my look I'll put
7:57
some posts in and then they'll end up
8:00
falling over and it'll all collapse and
8:02
all the branches will break but you're
8:04
not allowed to use concrete on your
8:07
allotment so unfortunately I just end up
8:10
having to put them into the ground and
8:12
stamping them down or putting a brick at
8:14
side of them to like wedge it in that
8:17
sometimes
8:19
works but if you got any tips on keeping
8:22
posts secure without I'm falling over
8:26
let me know as obviously like I said I
8:28
can't use concrete so I've got to look
8:30
at other options on keeping posts
8:33
upright but yeah I'm looking forward to
8:36
this so we're going to order some bits
8:38
and Bobs I'll obviously have to order
8:41
some wires
8:43
and I won't have to order any get any
8:46
wood in because I've got plenty of wood
8:49
uh if you don't know me I'm a big wood
8:51
hoarder if I see wood available I'll
8:54
take it and I'll save
8:56
it when I were down on the allotment the
8:58
other day one of the other allotment uh
9:00
tenant said to me Ben have you got any
9:02
wood that I can use to start this fire
9:04
off I went yes I've got wood but it's
9:06
not for
9:08
burning but yeah uh I'm one of these
9:11
that'll save every piece of wood for
9:13
anything because you never know when it
9:15
might come in
9:18
handy but I hope that we do manage to
9:20
get down to the allotment this weekend
9:22
hopefully it's not snored by the time
9:25
this podcast comes out and hopefully
9:28
we'll be able to start getting lots more
9:30
stuff done like I said I just want to
9:32
finish off this little strawberry bed
9:34
area and where all my black brid are and
9:36
everything once that's tided then I can
9:39
get on to the interesting stuff which is
9:41
sorting out my shed sorting out my poly
9:44
tunnel fixing any of the beds what are
9:47
damaged on the allotment and getting all
9:49
them painted as well which is going to
9:51
be a job and half but I don't want to
9:53
paint them all until Springtime really
9:55
because if it snows or if it rains
9:58
throughout all of the winter it'll just
10:00
wash off again however good they say
10:03
these wood paints are they do wash off
10:06
if anybody's knows a wood paint that
10:08
don't wash off let me know because I'll
10:11
use
10:12
it but yeah I end up having to paint
10:14
them every couple of years uh you don't
10:17
have to paint them but obviously it
10:18
treats the wood it protects it for a bit
10:21
longer and stops IT rotting as fast and
10:24
it looks nice I I like my allotment to
10:27
look aesthetically nice as well so
10:29
hopefully we'll get all that
10:31
done so I hope you all have a fantastic
10:35
weekend down at the alotment hopefully
10:37
it isn't too C here I'll be wearing my
10:40
body warmer I may have started a bonfire
10:42
again keep warm around the
10:44
bonfire if I have a bonfire done I won't
10:46
get any work done because I'll just sit
10:48
around fire I do love sitting around the
10:50
fire and smelling the
10:52
burning I know that's weird but
10:54
everybody loves the smells like I love
10:56
the smell of tarmac as well so yeah
10:59
hopefully we get that area finished and
11:02
get it all sorted so until tomorrow's
