0:58
of bird birs Wildlife plants tips
1:04
advice and creating a s train that
1:07

1:09

1:12
elopment and creating czy habitat where
1:15
we'll guide you through the joys of
1:18
adding the nature into your backyard and
1:21
the benefits behind it so grab your
1:23
binoculus and your gardening gloves it's
1:26
time to the nurture the wild side of
1:28
your green space SP in your garden and
1:31
an
1:32
alotment so in this episode we're going
1:34
to talk about why it's so important to
1:36
get the wildlife and the birds into your
1:39
garden and to be honest when I first
1:42
took on my plot for the first few few
1:44
years I weren't bothered whatsoever
1:46
about looking after the birds or the
1:48
wildli and I just thought I'll just grw
1:51
out my fruit and my vegetables and there
1:55
we'll have it we'll be looking after
1:57
what I need to do in my allotment with
1:59
GR is fruit and veg and that's all I'm
2:01
bothered about we don't need to bother
2:03
about anything else and yeah I had some
2:06
successful crops and stuff like that but
2:09
also you get a lot of pests and stuff
2:13
down at your plot
2:15
so what I started looking into is
2:18
natural ways of getting rid of pests and
2:22
the general answer to a lot of that was
2:25
birds and wildlife because birds and
2:28
wildlife will obviously help get rid of
2:32
pests and the reason why birds will get
2:35
rid of pests is that they'll come down
2:37
they'll eat the Slugs they'll eat the
2:39
snails and they'll get rid of them from
2:43
out of your allotment and garden so you
2:45
won't have as many slugs and cells
2:47
you'll still get plenty trust me uh they
2:49
won't eat them all
2:51
unfortunately but it will help reduce
2:53
the numbers down on your plot and
2:57
obviously the same goes for wildlife if
2:58
you attract Hedgehog or slug um frogs to
3:02
the plot they will also eat the Slugs
3:04
and
3:05
snails so encouraging Wildlife to your
3:09
plot is very
3:10
important and over the last couple of
3:14
years I've put more and more effort into
3:17
looking after the wildlife on my plot
3:20
I've got two bird houses up and when I
3:24
first put my bird houses up literally
3:27
and this is the genuine truth Within
3:29
about 30 minutes of putting it up I had
3:32
blue tis coming to inspect them and look
3:36
around to see if they were habitable for
3:39
them to move into and within a day they'
3:43
started building the nests in the bird
3:47
boxes and I was so amazed and they laid
3:50
some blue T eggs and I got some baby
3:53
blue tis on my allotments
3:56
and all the time you could see the blue
3:58
tis flying in and out in and out with
4:01
all the grubs and the worms and the
4:02
Slugs to feed the youngsters and that
4:07
obviously helps keep the Slugs and uh
4:09
snails down in the
4:10
bugs so attracting the blue tits and the
4:14
birds to the plot is very important and
4:17
also obviously as it's winter time at
4:20
the
4:20
moment it's good to feed the birds
4:25
because there's not much food around for
4:27
the birds at the moment obviously they
4:29
can be snow on the ground or the ground
4:30
can be frosted over and rock hard so
4:33
then they won't be able to dig the worms
4:34
out and stuff like that so you need to
4:36
encourage the birds to your garden by
4:38
feeding them and yeah it can be
4:41
expensive but it is nice to see
4:44
different varieties of birds down at my
4:46
alotment I do love seeing them flying in
4:49
and out and yet they can attract racks
4:52
and squirrels to the plot twe the seeds
4:55
but
4:56
it's swings and roundabouts with
4:59
anything
5:00
um you just have to bite the bullet
5:03
sometimes and just go with what you
5:05
think's best so I do love to attract the
5:08
birds down to my plot we're talking
5:10
about the feathered ones here um but
5:13
yeah we try and get as many different
5:16
varieties of bird feed because different
5:19
varieties of bird feed will attract
5:21
different birds down to the
5:24
alotment and I've had like blue tits
5:27
I've had finches I've had sparrows you
5:29
don't see many black birds throw down at
5:31
my plot that is one thing I don't see I
5:34
don't see many black birds so if
5:36
anyone's got any tips on attracting
5:38
black birds down to my plot please do
5:40
let me know cuz I do like to see black
5:42
birds as the lovely and you just don't
5:45
see many of them these days down on my
5:47
plot I don't know why whether they're
5:50
more shy but when I used to live at my
5:52
parents house there used to be a black
5:53
bird in the garden while live there all
5:56
the time they used to attack you because
5:58
they got Birds nesting in the
6:00
uh Hedges and stuff like that but I do
6:02
want to get some black birds down at my
6:04
plot so please do let me know in uh by
6:08
sending me a message how I can attract
6:10
black birs to my allotment as I would
6:12
like to know and also I've got a pond
6:17
down at my plot which I've had in for a
6:19
couple of years and every year I make
6:22
sure that I've got some fog spawn in it
6:25
to get the frogs hatching well uh the
6:28
Tad Poes hatching into
6:30
frogs because the more frogs that you
6:32
have down at your plot obviously they'll
6:34
go around eating all the fogs uh eating
6:37
all the SS and snails up and out of
6:40
everything from the birds to the frogs
6:43
I'd say the frogs are the main thing
6:46
that I want to concentrate on getting on
6:48
the plot because frogs do a fantastic
6:52
amount of work and obviously frogs
6:55
you'll see around the garden M when it's
6:58
wet and when it's
7:00
stormy and horrible because frogs like
7:02
to be out of the rain and obviously when
7:05
it's raining that's when the slugs come
7:07
out as well so frogs are a vital thing
7:11
to your allotment if you can get frogs
7:12
on your allotment you're laughing
7:15
because they will help you so much and
7:18
they'll save so much pain and misery
7:22
from everything in Eaton they're
7:25
literally going around scooping them up
7:27
for you at night time and in the rainy
7:30
weather so it's good to look after your
7:34
allotment the next thing is what I want
7:36
to start looking out for on my plot is I
7:39
want to start looking after the creepy
7:43
crawlers and stuff like that I need to
7:44
get some BG uh houses that's one thing I
7:47
do want to get down on the plot uh so
7:50
that's going to be his next thing to get
7:51
some bug houses we sorted out the birds
7:54
we've sorted out the frogs now we're
7:56
going to be getting some bug huts uh you
8:00
can actually make your own uh if you
8:02
look around on uh line how to make them
8:05
uh or you can purchase them and like
8:07
you'll get your ladybirds your earwigs
8:09
and stuff like that hiding in them um
8:11
butterflies you can get a butterfly
8:13
house as well I might get one of put
8:15
those this year a butterfly
8:18
house so I've got on my list I want a
8:21
Butterfly House a bug hook and I would
8:25
love a couple
8:28
of head
8:30
houses down at my plot uh but they are
8:33
quite
8:34
expensive so we might get a couple of
8:36
Hedgehog homes this year so stay
8:40
tuned if we do get some Hedgehog homes
8:42
we'll keep you updated and we'll post
8:44
some pictures of them uh or if anyone
8:47
wants to send me some feel
8:49
free but yeah keep listening to these
8:52
podcasts and we'll be able to get one uh
8:54
CU they are quite expensive uh but yeah
8:57
I'd love some Hedgehog homes down on my
8:59
plot
9:00
as obviously again hedgehogs are
9:02
fantastic for down at the allotment so
9:04
we might look into that and I do know
9:07
that I've have got I've I've once seen a
9:09
hedgehog down at my plot it were
9:11
hibernated in my poly tunnel so we have
9:14
had traces of hedgehogs down on my plot
9:17
so yeah
9:19
possibly we may look into to getting
9:22
that soon uh if you know when the best
9:25
time is to put a hedgehog house out uh
9:27
obviously they're hibernating at this
9:29
time year aren't they uh do let me know
9:32
when I need to put one out if anybody's
9:34
got any experience with
9:35
hedgehogs uh so
9:38
hopefully we can get stuff sorted this
9:41
year my plot is going to look absolutely
9:44
fantastic this year trust me we are
9:47
going to have the best looking allotment
9:49
around in Sheffield and in the UK you
9:53
can all Miss for that if it's looking
9:55
rubbish people let me know please do
10:00
but yeah I I am certainly in a good mood
10:02
for my allotment this year and the
10:04
amount of work and time and effort I'm
10:06
putting in is
10:07
unbelievable and as I've recorded this
