Hello and welcome to the Yorkshire Gardeners how-to video for today. Today's video is going
0:09
to be about how to prune your raspberries and also to take cuttings from your raspberries
0:14
As you know raspberries are very expensive to buy as plants. They can cost anything like eight
0:22
pound just for three three little plants so taking cuttings is an excellent way to
0:29
make more plants on your plot um so that you get more produce and you can never have enough raspberries
0:36
as you can freeze them and just use them when you want really they'll freeze for a long time so
0:43
yes lots of raspberries equals happy people as you can see these are all my raspberries
0:50
they all need chopping back from last year so i'm going to show you how to cut them back and how to
0:57
know which ones to cut back some you need to leave but then some you can cut back because they won't
1:03
grow again so well let me show you how to do it so the answer this trick is knowing which ones to
1:09
cut back and which ones not to cut back so the best way to do it is get yourself a pair of little
1:16
secateurs and what you need to do is find your raspberry cane and all you have to do is just
1:25
scrape up and down it and if it's not green which it's not you can cut it back
1:37
just like that so obviously this one here will need uh leaving but for example
1:45
So if you scrape down it, it's showing green. So that means you leave it
1:54
And that's the one that you need to keep. So all we have to do is just carry on and go along them
2:04
Scrape. Dead. So chop it out. Just like that. Scrape. green so keep it Scrape dead so chop it out And we continue all the way on until we done them all
2:32
It's as simple as that. So looking at this one. Again, that one's dead
2:49
So, chop it off. A tree growing
2:59
Chop that out. It's definitely dead, I can tell by that. A lot of times you can actually tell which ones are dead, like this one
3:08
It's just wood. Chop it straight out. Those have to do with the scraping method
3:15
if you can see that they're dead you know that it's done with uh but obviously these are actually
3:21
showing buds on a lot of these so it's quite obvious which ones are ones to keep and which
3:27
ones to get rid of uh i have left it a bit bit too late-ish but at least i can see which ones
3:35
need chopping back at first hand i don't always have to do the scrape test so you just continue on like that until you've done them all now i'm going to show you how to do
3:48
cuttings from raspberries so these raspberries here are what i've dug up as i've moved them from
3:53
an area that they've just gone wild in so these ones i'm going to use to take some cuttings we're
3:59
going to try it out i've never done this before so it may go wrong it may go right but it's an
4:07
experiment and we'll see how we get on. As I said, raspberry canes are very
4:12
expensive to buy, probably about three for eight pound, expensive as ever. So we're
4:19
going to learn about taking some cuttings and this is how you do it
4:22
Again, this is a raspberry cane. These bits down the side are called nodes
4:30
I'll grind down it. In fact, I think this one's dead so we won't be using that one
4:34
but we'll use this one as we know it's alive and this one
4:40
a lot of them are alive to be honest I put them into soil so that they wouldn die so let us get one of these to start So right I got myself this raspberry cane and I know it definitely a lie as it got some green buds growing on it So what we going to do is just chop it off
4:58
at the root down at the bottom. I'm going to chop the root bit off
5:04
just like that. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut in diagonals like that. That's
5:18
one. That's two. And then I'm just going to chop that top bit off of this one. And that's
5:32
three so I've got three raspberry canes and we're gonna try and see if we can get these to grow
5:42
so on to the next one again with a bangle-long cane
5:52
chop the root bit off at the bottom and then I'm going to chop one two
6:11
three four I'm just going to chop the top bit off at the top like that so
6:21
four raspberry canes from one. So I'm going to continue with this and get the
6:28
rest done and I'll show you how about potting them all up. The plants from just about five
6:36
stems what I've grown so now we've got to pot them all up. We're now ready to get them all
6:42
potted up and get growing up. So what I'm using are deep plant pots as the roots are quite longer
6:52
than when they get growing so I want deep plant pots and I'm gonna fill them up
7:02
fill them up with compost and get them planted in there. I'm going to plant about
7:06
two or three in each plant pot should be okay that as I not got loads of massive plant pots i don think i got 50 so two or three in each one so let get them started so i used a large plant pot
7:20
like i said i've filled it about a third full uh i've used all compost from last year for my tomatoes
7:27
uh it should be all right i don't want to be using brand new compost uh just for getting it started
7:32
we'll see how they get on. So next up you need to grab your raspberry cane and
7:41
just pop it in the bottom just like that and then same with the others. I'm going to put three in this one
8:02
like that and then i can fill up the rest of the plant pot with compost to make sure
8:10
that they stand up refilled up now all i need to do is just water it let's get cracking
8:18
about the rest first i've got lots to do so all them are potted up just need to get them
8:26
watered now so like i said before i've not done cuttings before so this is the first
8:31
time that I've done them so it's a trial and error thing so if you are going to follow this
8:37
and they die don't blame me don't blame the Yorkshire gardener but if they do then this is
8:43
fantastic it'll save you having to buy them ever again and you can get a massive crop out of them
8:48
hopefully so just got to keep them watered now until they take root before I can plant them out
8:54
To join the other raspberries that I've got and then hopefully I'll have a hedge of raspberries
