1:38

1:41
grab a brew and enjoy today's
1:46
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
1:49
gardening with Ben it's Saturday the
1:53
weekend is finally here hip hip hooray
1:56
you may say I certainly say it and so do
1:59
you cuz that means I will be back down
2:02
at the allotment today and yeah I'm glad
2:06
that we managed to do a full week's
2:09
episodes are you impressed I've managed
2:11
to
2:12
do all the recordings and get them all
2:15
out to you every single day so I'm
2:18
hoping that you are all enjoying that
2:21
the back again and I know I've been
2:23
getting a lot of streams from uh the
2:25
stats that I see which is absolutely
2:27
fantastic So yeah thank you you for
2:30
everybody that's sticking around and
2:31
come back to listen to them all again
2:33
hopefully like I say now they're going
2:35
to be back fulltime every single day for
2:38
you to listen to and if I miss a day
2:41
make sure you message me and say Ben
2:43
where's them podcasts you promised us
2:45
every single day you telling
2:49
fibs but yes hopefully the podcasts are
2:52
now back fulltime and you'll have seen
2:55
if you don't follow me on YouTube
2:56
already the videos are coming out thick
2:59
and fast you to watch as well on YouTube
3:02
and again on Facebook and Instagram I
3:04
share them to everywhere now so you can
3:07
find my videos popping up everywhere and
3:09
hopefully I am doing so if you do see
3:12
them make sure you give them a like and
3:14
a follow and leave a comment as well if
3:17
you see videos because it does help push
3:19
them out if you give a comment on it as
3:21
well so you're doing your little bit for
3:23
me so what are we doing this weekend
3:27
down at the allotment well fingers
3:29
crossed the weather will be decent as
3:31
I've not been down to the allotment all
3:33
week as obviously I've been at work and
3:36
it's too dark when I finish work now so
3:39
we've not been down for a week so
3:43
obviously the first job will be when I
3:45
get to the allotment will be to fill the
3:47
bird feeders back up and fingers crossed
3:50
they have been eating them all I'm
3:52
guessing they will have done whether Mr
3:53
squirrel's been back eating them all
3:55
we'll have to see but I've got my
3:57
wildlife camera up as well now so hope
4:00
we have got some pictures of what's been
4:02
eating them and hopefully some footage
4:05
for you to see and hopefully I'll be
4:07
able to share it online for you all to
4:08
see of what I've done so hopefully like
4:11
I said we'll get us bird feeders filled
4:13
back up and the birds will love me for
4:16
that we've got so many bird feeders I
4:18
could literally buy a load more as well
4:20
if I wanted to but I I'm staying away
4:23
from them at the moment I've got some
4:24
ideas where I want to put some in the
4:26
future but we'll see about that and yeah
4:30
I've also got my Ren Bird Box to get up
4:33
we've got that to get up so I might try
4:35
and get that up this weekend so that the
4:37
Rens can start nesting in it and
4:38
enjoying
4:40
it and what else will we be doing well
4:42
we'll be checking up on all my produce
4:45
what I've got growing obviously I've got
4:48
my onions in hopefully they'll have
4:50
started sprouting by now they've been in
4:51
a few weeks I saw one just starting to
4:54
sprout but I want them all to start
4:56
sprouting now I want them all to start
4:58
popping through and showing the heads
5:00
and faces to me and saying hello we're
5:03
growing I don't want a dff set of onion
5:07
sets if you get me so hopefully they've
5:10
started growing and hopefully a lot more
5:12
of my garlic will have started sprouting
5:14
as well now and hopefully we'll be well
5:16
under the way of growing them now my
5:19
broad beans what I started in my shed I
5:22
don't know if I told you this but Mr
5:25
ratti or squirrel had been in there
5:27
eating them all and eaten all the tops
5:30
of them now I grow them in seed trays to
5:33
stop them from being eaten when I'm
5:34
growing them outside but something's got
5:37
in my shed and eating them all while
5:38
they're in the seed trays so it's not a
5:40
win-win
5:42
situation so yeah we might have to get
5:45
some more broad beans to start and try
5:47
again over winter time but we'll have a
5:49
look around see what we can get and
5:52
whether it's worth off doing them or not
5:54
but I I'd like to I'd like to show you
5:57
how well they are easy to grow through
5:59
the window period so we might have to
6:01
order some more seeds and get them
6:03
growing but we'll have a look around see
6:05
what we can do we might be able to get
6:08
these ones back alive we'll see we might
6:10
have to just cover them over and they
6:12
might start sprouting from where they
6:14
beat eat them off and start them going
6:17
again we've also got our sweet peas to
6:20
sort out this weekend I've been saying
6:22
it every time when I've been doing my
6:24
tour video that they need trimming back
6:26
ready for getting them to Bush out over
6:31
the next year I start them off nice and
6:34
early so that they get nice and strong
6:36
and they're well developed ready for
6:38
planting out after the Frost has gone
6:41
next year so we need to trim all them
6:42
back and get them all tided up and done
6:45
and again I'm going to do a video about
6:46
that about getting them all sorted ready
6:49
for next year so make sure you stay
6:50
tuned for that video coming out on
6:53
YouTube
6:54
and I think this weekend is going to be
6:57
a weekend of concentrating on sorting
7:00
out all my paths on my plot as over the
7:04
last few weeks I've been sorting out all
7:06
my beds I've du over all my beds now all
7:09
my beds are cleared and Weed Free
7:12
they've got roots and stuff in them but
7:14
hopefully we'll just keep turning them
7:15
over over winter period and keeping them
7:19
Weed Free that way and pulling out any
7:21
roots that we find as we're digging them
7:23
over and keeping them hold down as
7:27
obviously it only takes 5 minutes to
7:29
hold a bed down and it can take half an
7:33
hour to weed a bed so if you hold them
7:35
every week then you'll keep on top of
7:37
the weeds in
7:39
theory
7:40
so I might go around hoing them all I've
7:43
also got this wolf garden tool which is
7:46
absolutely brilliant it's like a little
7:48
pushalong rator to what clips into the
7:53
hand rail uh handle and you just push it
7:59
and it's brilliant and it's got a hole
8:00
on the other side of it as well and it
8:03
seems to pull out all the roots as well
8:05
which is absolutely fantastic it's
8:06
expensive it's like 40 odd pound for
8:09
this head but it's well worth its money
8:11
in gold and it saves you so much back
8:14
ache and muscle pain with pushing a hoe
8:17
around so we might do that and I'll film
8:19
a video of that for you as well for you
8:20
to see uh like I said I'm trying to film
8:22
as many videos as possible CU obviously
8:25
I do these podcasts but then it's
8:27
sometimes good to see visual stuff for
8:30
you to be able to see what I'm actually
8:32
doing down there and I'm enjoying doing
8:34
these videos down at the alotment now as
8:36
I'm starting to do weekend blogs showing
8:39
you what I get up to over the full
8:40
weekend then I'll give you a tour of the
8:43
plot at the end of the weekend to show
8:45
you what it's looking like what's
8:46
growing what's not growing and it gives
8:49
me a chance as well when I do the weekly
8:50
tour to see what jobs I need to do as I
8:53
go around like saying oh I'm going to do
8:55
this I'm going to do that but I never
8:56
get around to do it and one of the other
8:58
jobs what I keep saying that I need to
9:00
do is I need to dig my geraniums out and
9:02
put them in pots and put them in my shed
9:04
for over winter because we're going to
9:06
try and keep hold of them now if you
9:08
leave your geraniums outside the frost
9:11
will kill them and then you'll have to
9:12
get new plants next year whereas if you
9:14
dig them up put them in a poly tunnel or
9:16
a greenhouse and or if you've got a
9:19
window cell inside but I don't want to
9:21
fetch them in doors uh into my flat but
9:24
if you've got somewhere warmish pot them
9:26
up and look them look after them prune
9:28
them back can trim them and they will
9:31
grow back next year and flow next year
9:34
and save you a lot of money so if you've
9:37
got geraniums dig them up and move them
9:39
indoors and see if if you can keep them
9:42
ready for next year save yourself some
9:44
money as geraniums do cost quite a lot
9:46
of money and I didn't realize how easy
9:49
it is to grow them from seed I did that
9:51
one of the years I grew a load of
9:53
geraniums from seed and it is really
9:55
easy to do so we might have to do that
9:57
again this year trial some geraniums
10:00
from seed and show you how easy it is to
10:02
grow them I'm going to do another video
10:05
as well on how easy it is to grow
10:06
rhubarb from seed as that is really easy
10:10
as well but obviously we don't start
10:13
them growing until March time so
10:16
hopefully like I said this weekend I'm
10:17
going to be clearing all my paths
10:19
tidying them all up and straightening
10:22
them up and then next week I'm possibly
10:26
going to be looking
10:28
at fixing all my Beds which have rotted
10:31
or Fallen apart and it'll be case of
10:33
screwing them all back together again
10:35
and tidying them all up and then we'll
10:37
see what the weather's like because I
10:40
want to repaint them all I want to
10:42
Spruce them all up but if it's too damp
10:45
the paint won't stick to the wood very
10:47
well and it might be best off doing it
10:50
in January time so we'll have to wait
10:54
and see what the weather's like because
10:56
if I paint tomorrow now and we have a
10:58
really bad winter like
10:59
rain snow and stuff like that it'll just
11:02
wash it all off again however much
11:05
Garden paint it says it last year it
11:08
doesn't it does wash off eventually and
11:12
it certainly does with my beds CU I seem
11:14
to paint them every couple of
11:16
years so we've got a mold paint and
11:19
Spruce up and then I've got a herb area
11:23
at the top of my plot as well which I
11:26
don't really use much it's just there to
11:28
fill a space in to use an area up on my
11:31
plot cuz it's very shaded where that
11:33
part of the plot is and I can't really
11:36
grow that much in there so I've like
11:38
made some little uh brick beds uh when I
11:42
was Tiding all my plot up I found loads
11:44
and loads of bricks on my alotment
11:46
absolutely LED and I made like brick
11:49
little beds and I put some herbs in each
11:52
of those so I'm going to be Tiding all
11:55
that up as well this weekend that is the
11:58
plan to get all that area cleared and
12:00
then it'll be a case just like sorting
12:02
out all the leaves what I've dropped
12:04
from all the trees and stuff like that
12:05
putting them in my composting bin
12:07
tidying up it's just general tidiness at
12:10
this time of year and I'm trying to get
12:12
as much done possible on my plot now
12:15
ready for next year as like I say I only
12:19
get two days off a week now before I
12:20
used to work four on four off and have
12:22
four days off so I used to get a lot
12:24
done so it's case of cramming it all
12:26
into two days and getting it all done
12:28
and who who knows what winter we're
12:30
going to have we could be have an
12:32
Absolut terrible winter where we can't
12:33
get out in the garden for months and not
12:36
be able to do anything so the more stuff
12:38
that I can get done now in preparation
12:40
for next year it will save me the whole
12:43
time in the world and once I've done all
12:45
my allotment and if it's still decent
12:47
well even if it's not decent I'm going
12:50
to be in my shed getting all that ready
12:52
for next year and tidying up like I said
12:56
in one of my other podcasts last year I
12:58
spent a lot the winter rebuilding all my
13:00
shed as it had all collapsed it had
13:03
rotted roof pieces were missing off it
13:06
so it needed a lot of time and effort in
13:08
getting it all back up to scratch and
13:10
this year I'm going to renovate the
13:12
inside of it and repaint I'm going to
13:15
paint it all get some nice shelving down
13:19
make it presentable because I want to
13:21
start filming in there and sharing tips
13:23
and advice from in there so hopefully
13:27
we'll have a nice area to film in as
13:30
well in the shed so I'm looking forward
13:32
to that as well so yeah I hope you've
13:34
