0:24
episode hello everyone and welcome back
0:27
to gardening with then well it's
0:31
Wednesday we're halfway through the week
0:33
which means it's nearly time to get back
0:35
to the allotment and I can't say fast
0:38
enough roll on the weekend because I
0:40
can't wait to be back down in my
0:42
allotment and wow what a week it has
0:44
been so far I've obviously hit 10,000
0:49
followers on Instagram so you got that
0:51
bonus episode last night uh two episodes
0:54
in one day so once again thank you for
0:57
all those that do support me and that
1:00
have subscribed to this podcast and
1:02
listen to it on a regular basis it does
1:04
mean the world to me and everything that
1:08
I get from the ads goes back in towards
1:11
my allotment and being able to share
1:13
more tips and advice with you all and
1:16
sharing what I get up to so thanks for
1:18
those that are loyal supporters and that
1:21
have subscribed to it and yeah and
1:23
thanks for those that do message me
1:25
about the episodes it's great to hear
1:26
from you all and that you enjoy
1:29
listening to them
1:31
so what are we up to at the moment well
1:35
obviously I'm on night shifts at the
1:37
moment so I'm not getting down to the
1:38
allotment but I am getting planning on
1:41
what I'm doing at the weekend and stuff
1:44
like
1:45
that so when it comes to this time of
1:49
year it's great to start thinking about
1:53
what flowers you want to grow on your
1:55
alotment because flowers are the one key
1:59
thing that bring the
2:01
pollinators to your plot and to help you
2:04
get more produce and I've been going on
2:07
about that for quite a while now that
2:09
obviously growing flowers encourages the
2:11
Beast to the allotment and you will get
2:14
more produce from it and that is one key
2:18
thing that I've learned over the years
2:20
and I'm always looking at new things to
2:23
try growing on the allotment and
2:25
different flowers and stuff like that
2:28
and growing flowers is obviously a
2:30
fantastic part of it as well because
2:33
when you when you've got an allotment
2:34
and you're just growing fruit and veg it
2:36
can just be completely green because
2:39
there's not much color in it and all you
2:42
get is just a few flowers what form them
2:44
thing but it's mainly just a green color
2:47
so adding flowers to your allotment can
2:50
improve the color and the look of it and
2:53
make it really really nice and that is
2:56
what I'm doing mainly this year and
3:00
hopefully over the years to come as we
3:03
learn more about different flowers that
3:06
we can grow on the
3:08
allotment so what flowers are good
3:12
flowers to try and grow if you're a new
3:15
way that is a good question because
3:17
you've all got to start somewhere and I
3:20
tend to want to B grow all the flowers
3:23
from seed if possible uh if I do spot
3:26
Bargains in shops of plants I will buy
3:29
them and plant them because I'm trying
3:32
to get as many perennials as possible so
3:35
that I don't have to grow as many
3:37
flowers further down the line obviously
3:39
I'll still still be growing them but I
3:42
won't have to grow as many as I get more
3:44
perennials to fill the gaps in and keep
3:47
growing really because the perennials
3:48
come back year after year whereas a lot
3:50
of the ones that you grow from seed will
3:52
just be annuals and they'll just grow
3:55
for the year and need replacing the year
3:58
after so some fantastic flowers to try
4:02
and grow are obviously sweet peas which
4:05
I've talked about quite a lot in these
4:07
podcasts and they are one of the best
4:10
flowers that you can grow and they don't
4:12
take up much room whatsoever you just
4:14
need something to for them to grow up
4:17
against and you can be getting blooms
4:20
all the way through Summer and the more
4:23
you pick them the more flowers you will
4:26
get on them and your friends and family
4:28
will love you love here because you'll
4:29
be picking them literally every single
4:31
day cuz they produce that many flowers
4:33
on them and you can get a fantastic
4:36
return from the seeds that you purchase
4:38
some seeds can be quite expensive for
4:41
sweet peas but you can pick up some
4:43
bargain ones as well so have a look
4:45
around and see what seeds you want to
4:48
buy next up is sunflowers now sunflowers
4:53
are something that I've grown from a kid
4:56
really I've always been into growing
4:58
sunflowers for the joy of just seeing
5:00
how tall you can grow your sunflower and
5:03
with the right care and attention you
5:06
can get a massive sunflower going up 12
5:10
to 14 foot depending on how much you
5:12
actually look after it and it's all it's
5:15
enjoyment it's one that you can grow
5:17
with the kids if you've got children or
5:19
the grandchildren uh I've not got no
5:22
kids so I'm just growing it for the fun
5:24
of myself really uh which is always fun
5:27
and it it's great to see the color that
5:30
you get from the sunflower
5:33
and I've purchased 1,800 sunflower seeds
5:37
it's a mixed sunflower pack uh for this
5:40
year I purchased one last year and we
5:42
got some fantastic looking sunflowers in
5:44
them uh so I've purchased one again this
5:47
year so hopefully we can get a massive
5:50
array of sunflowers down at the
5:51
allotment this year to show off and for
5:54
you to enjoy uh in all the photos that
5:57
I'll be sharing of it uh but yeah
5:59
another good thing with sunflowers is
6:01
that they produce fantastic canes as
6:04
well uh once you let them dry out and
6:06
die off they'll become lock hard the
6:09
stalks and you can use them for canes
6:11
the year after if need to be uh say if
6:14
you're having to buy canes so the more
6:16
sunflowers you grow the more canes you
6:18
will have for the allotment and you can
6:20
use them that way as well so there's
6:23
always benefits in growing
6:26
sunflowers another good flour that I've
6:29
learned how to grow is geraniums now
6:32
geraniums are quite expensive to buy
6:34
from the shops uh for the amount that
6:36
you get in a pack of like six or
6:39
something and they actually really
6:42
really easy to grow um you don't get
6:44
many seeds in a packet uh but they are
6:47
fantastic and easy to grow and I've had
6:50
success year after year with geraniums I
6:52
really can't believe it now you can get
6:54
just set colors or you can get a mixed
6:56
bag uh depending on what you purchase
7:00
but all I'll be doing is sewing my seed
7:02
now and they will be flowering from like
7:06
August to October and I've dug all my
7:10
geraniums up what I planted last year
7:12
and I've put them in pots and put them
7:13
in the shed and they flowered all the
7:15
way through winter they're still
7:17
flowering to this day um my plot
7:19
neighbor keeps telling me that I need to
7:21
cut off these flower heads or they won't
7:23
shoot out at the bottom so I need to
7:25
listen to him soon and cut the flowers
7:27
off and let them start growing from the
7:29
bottom to Bush out a bit better but yeah
7:32
I really can't bear to cut them flowers
7:34
off because they're brightening up my
7:35
shed at the moment and it's absolutely
7:38
fantastic to see so I do love geraniums
7:42
and they don't take much care and
7:44
attention whatsoever you just snip the
7:47
top off once the flowers have died and
7:49
it'll
7:50
encourage to grow so if you've not tried
7:53
gr geraniums before go out and get a
7:55
packet and give them a try they are
7:58
really really easy to
8:00
grow now another good flower that I do
8:03
grow on my allotment which does bring
8:05
fantastic colors every time I grow or
8:09
kalunda and I can never say that word
8:11
right I don't know if I'm saying it
8:12
right to you uh but they you get so many
8:16
seeds in a packet for that one for the
8:18
price and they're extremely cheap and
8:21
the best thing about them is that they
8:23
just flow after flower after flower all
8:26
the way through Summer and Autumn and it
8:29
can add so much nice color to the plot
8:31
and the bees absolutely love them and
8:34
the best thing about kalunda is that if
8:36
you forget to chop the heads off once
8:38
they've died they'll go to seed and they
8:41
just set the seeds out everywhere they
8:42
fire the seeds off everywhere and some
8:45
allotment people say they're worse than
8:47
weed because they just set the seeds all
8:51
over the place but I don't care if this
8:54
flowers growing all over my plot I
8:56
really don't care because it's
8:57
attracting the bees and it's free
8:59
flowers
9:00
as well so that is one fantastic flower
9:03
to grow and I'll certainly be growing
9:04
some more this year if not there'll be
9:07
plenty popping up around the plot from
9:09
last year uh you can never get the ball
9:12
out but yeah one fantastic flower to
9:15
grow that is so I'll be growing some of
9:18
them and then there is I'm growing
9:22
gladiol eyes as well this year gladiol
9:25
eyes uh I purchased I think it was 100
9:29
bul 100 corns should I say they're not
9:31
called bulbs they're call corns glad
9:33
eyes 100 corns for 9 and they mixed bags
9:39
so all different colors and the thing is
9:42
with gladiol is you can plant the corns
9:44
now and they'll be flowering towards
9:47
July August
9:49
time and you can use them obviously for
9:51
vasas and stuff like that but you learn
9:53
to yet one flow on the corn so it's up
9:56
to you if you cut them off on I
9:57
certainly won't be cutting them off
10:00
um but they do stand proud in the uh
10:02
borders of your plot uh they look
10:05
absolutely fantastic and the color that
10:07
comes from them as well and I asked my
10:10
followers about cuz I'd read that you
10:13
meant to dig the corns up and store them
10:15
in a shed and then replant them the year
10:17
after but I asked my followers what they
10:19
they do and a lot of people just tend to
10:22
leave them in the ground and they come
10:23
year after year uh they just need to be
10:26
deep enough so that they don't get
10:27
affected by the frost and kill them off
10:30
uh but yeah gladi eyes are one of the
10:33
best things that you can grow on the
10:35
plot so yeah those are some of the
10:38
flowers what you can try and grow and
10:40
have success with let me know if it's
10:44
your first year in growing flowers I
10:46
always love to hear what everybody else
10:48
is doing and if I've encouraged you to
10:50
grow flowers let me know because I do
10:53
get enjoyment out of encouraging other
10:55
people to do stuff as well so I hope
10:58
that you have a f fantastic
11:00
Wednesday the weekend is nearly here uh
11:04
it's fast approaching thankfully and
11:06
hopefully this nice weather will
11:08
