Industrial or Domestic Shredders?
There is two types of garden shredder you can look at purchasing. These are industrial which are usually for large amounts of garden rubbish, these are used by companies and councils – these come as blade or roller style shredders – these are ideal options for large amounts of waste which is created. Then there is domestic shredders which are ideal for at home for smaller quantities. These are ideal to store away and can be easily brought out when needed in the garden.
When looking at garden shredders you can either get petrol or electric shredders. Petrol garden shredders are often used by gardeners who don’t have access to electric. Electric ones are ideal for anyone using at home where they can just plug them straight into the mains.
There are two options of shredders to go for either a roller crushing or a impact blade style shredder. The roller shredder works on a rolling drum where it grips the branches by the wheel and is crushed. These are extreamly quiet shredders. Impact style shredders are very noisy and aggressive. The blades chop through the waste but these are not ideal for leaves only twigs and branches.

Here are some of the customer reviews on the product and their thoughts :-
- This is a great machine and I would highly recommend it but I wanted to write a review to detail what it does well and what it doesn’t do so well.
I’ve only had this machine for a couple of weeks but I’ve intentionally tried it with numerous different materials to see how it performed. Garden materials fed into the machine: - Birch, ash, apple branches up to 45mm
It handled these branches brilliantly, without any hesitation.
Note: large branches are essentially sliced and crushed, so you end up with (e.g.) a 45mmx5mm slice where the slice is intact but fractured (almost like a concertina) – you do not get wood chippings like those you buy in bags from the garden centre.

Customer Reviews
Here are some of the customer reviews on the product and their thoughts :-
- I purchased the T-mech Wood Chipper because of its 100mm branch chipping capacity. It was delivered promptly and efficiently. A small amount of assembly was necessary, but was easily accomplished. The Chipper was found to perform well in its operation. One disappointing feature was that the rubber screen on the branch hopper had become completely destroyed after its second one hour run. This is because the rubber was too brittle. However this has not affected performance and I am sufficiently satisfied with the product.

Customer Reviews
Here are some of the customer reviews on the product and their thoughts :-
- Bought this to replace a smaller ageing non Hyundai chipper that was very hard work as kept jamming and very slow at processing. It was one with a small chute for the branches and on another for the brush material. I was a little sceptical about ordering this as there are limited reviews and videos on the net. Well the Hyundai arrived the next day and was easy to assemble and after filling with oil it fired up almost straight away and would be out to work the following day. WOW, it is about 5-10 times quicker than its predecessor and the huge pile of cuttings took a mighty 28 minutes to clear and chopped its way through a variety of products and never got jammed and was able to throw the material some distance. I then used the following day and was again surprised and very impressed with the performance and fuel consumption. I would thoroughly recommend anyone with a large garden or looking at shredding on a commercial scale.

When you are purchasing a big product like a shredder it is always good to check out the reviews, ask friends if they have one or ask other allotment holders who have them. It is always good to use someones knowledge and experience of an item before you spend hundreds on a piece of gardening equipment.
There are many other factors you need to consider when you purchase a garden shredder. These can include, do you need a petrol or electric shredder? Where can you store it somewhere safely? If you are taking it to and from gardens can you actually fit it in your car and lift it in? What sort of branches, and garden rubbish will you be dealing with on the allotment or in gardens?
What to look for in a Garden Shredder

- Do you need a petrol or electric shredder? Make sure you have a source to electric if you purchase a electric shredder. If you are a gardener you are best going for a petrol one as it is a bit cheeky asking to use the electric.
- Check the size of your car or van and make sure you can actually fit it inside
- Is it noisy? Most of the shredders will be noisy but you can purchase quiet ones to use.
- Check the weight. Remember if you go for a big one make sure you can actually maneuver it. Also will you be able to lift it into your car and van?
- Is there a safety cut off switch on it. You always need to think about health and safety when using machinery.
Safety Notice for rotavators and tillers
There are many things you need to do to stay safe when using a rotavator. These are:-
- Never use the garden shredder on your own down on an allotment or an empty house. If you were to have an injury you would need help and assistance. Make sure someone is near you watching you.
- Get some ear defenders. Shredders and chippers are very noisy when they are up and running especially petrol ones. you do not want to be causing any damage to your hearing.
- Eye and face protection. Make sure this is worn at all ties when operating garden machinery
- Thick gardening gloves need to be worn, this can be if any of the branches are sharp and could cut you
- Make sure the area of the plot is clear of tools and anything on the ground. You do not want to be falling over a rake or some wood while running the shredder and chipper. Make sure it is on a level surface.
- First aid kit – always have a first aid kit on your allotment or to hand just in case you need it and that all the items are in date.
How to use a Garden Shredder or Chipper
When purchasing a Shredder you want to find one that is either already put together or the instructions are clear enough to do it yourself easily.
If you are purchasing a petrol shredder make sure you check the fuel that is needed to operate it. Obviously putting the wrong fuel type in can break it or damage it.
Do not let children use the shredder leave it to an adult that is capable of using the machinery. If you are letting staff use it make sure they have had a the appropriate training.
Choosing the day wisely to use the shredder
When using a garden shredder or chipper you want to ideally use it on a dry day as you don’t want it to be raining hard. This could make the branches slip and jam the machine. Also it will make all your mulch into mush. Stick to a dry day when using a garden shredder for better results.
Final thought of garden shredders
When you are going out to buy your garden shredder you most likely will be spending a lot of money and you will want it to last a long time without having to get it repaired often. It is always good to spend your money wisely when you are purchasing machinery. Check the warranty of the garden shredder. Make sure that you get the shredder serviced every year or every other year if it is for personal use. Look after you machine and make sure it is cleaned down after every use. Make sure the machine is turned off and unplugged if it is electric. Store the chipper somewhere dry and not damp as you don’t want it to rust. Chain your machine up so that it cannot get pinched.
Before purchasing make sure that you check the size of the branches you will be working with. Don’t buy a shredder that is only capable of only shredding small branches if yours a re a lot bigger.
Make sure you have all the safety equipment to use the machinery. Don’t think to yourself that you will save some money by not purchasing it. You don’t want to be causing an injury to you or your staff that maybe using it.
Lastly remember to only use a shredder if someone else is around near you. Do not operate machinery if you are on your own or if you have been drinking alcohol or under the influence.
