0:25
and welcome to your Sunday episode of
0:29
gardening with Ben I hope that your
0:32
weekend's been all right it's been
0:35
absolutely horrible weather very
0:38
horrible couldn't be any worse than what
0:40
it has been apart from snow but y it's
0:43
certainly been bad weather for gardening
0:46
and I hope that you've managed to get
0:49
some jobs done and as I always say is
0:52
that when it's raining it's a perfect
0:56
opportunity to do work inside your shed
1:00
look at all those seeds that you've got
1:01
in a bag or in a Cupboard somewhere sort
1:04
them all out into what months they
1:06
should be planted in and what seeds you
1:09
short of this year have a look on
1:11
websites have a look at new varieties
1:13
what have come out have a look and see
1:16
what you want to grow this year and yeah
1:19
it's about getting things prepared and
1:21
ready for the months ahead because come
1:24
March it's going to be busy getting
1:26
everything sewing and I've still got
1:28
absolutely love to see left to get yes
1:31
I've got about 500 packets of seeds but
1:34
there is so much left to get and like I
1:39
keep saying this year is going to be my
1:41
year on the plot it's going to be the
1:43
best production that I have ever put out
1:46
there of my allotment and I'm so looking
1:49
forward to this year and tasting all the
1:52
fresh fresh produce that I am growing
1:55
and seeing what I can grow and seeing if
1:57
I can cook stuff from it cuz I'm not a
1:59
brilliant cook myself a lot of the stuff
2:01
I just give it away to friends and
2:02
family yes they absolutely love me for
2:04
it uh but a lot of the stuff I don't
2:06
keep but you never know I might try and
2:09
cook some stuff with it this year and
2:11
see how we get on um what we can make
2:14
with uh different stuff from the
2:16
allotment and share it all with you as
2:18
well uh don't think I'll be bringing out
2:21
a cookbook pretty soon but yeah um I'm
2:25
definitely going to try some recipes
2:27
this year have a look online and share
2:29
the with you and yeah I'm looking
2:32
forward to it they might look disgusting
2:35
by the time I've cooked them uh but as
2:37
long as it tastes nice that's all that
2:39
matters right
2:41
y but yeah today we're going to talk
2:45
about where you can find your
2:47
information for
2:48
gardening um because gardening is a a a
2:54
Fountain of Knowledge there's so much
2:56
out there that you can learn about
2:58
gardening
3:00
sometimes there's too much information
3:03
and in certain I'm part of like
3:06
different allotment groups on Facebook
3:08
and stuff like that and sometimes
3:11
there's some people in these groups that
3:13
are know it alls and they like to tell
3:16
you how bad you're doing things or
3:20
whether you're doing them wrong or the
3:22
way you should be doing them uh and oh I
3:25
wouldn't be doing it like that if I was
3:27
you um but how do people learn if they
3:33
don't make mistakes and that is what
3:35
I've learned to be honest when I first
3:37
started gardening there weren't Facebook
3:40
there weren't the internet and yeah it
3:44
were kiss of sewing the seeds and hoping
3:46
for the best and seeing what you got
3:48
from it and that's a a lot of the way
3:51
that I've learned
3:53
myself
3:55
because it's about learning it's about
3:57
just trying it and seeing hope hoping
4:00
for the best and seeing the outcome that
4:02
you can get from it um one thing that I
4:06
do recommend is gardening books
4:10
allotment books there's so many great
4:14
gardening books out there and so many
4:15
new ones coming out every single year by
4:18
different offers of different methods of
4:21
new ways to try stuff to grow and fun
4:25
ways of stuff to grow and I really
4:28
encourage you to go out there and have a
4:30
look at different gardening books to buy
4:32
a they're a good read and you'll learn
4:34
some stuff because sometimes you're not
4:37
don't always learn stuff when you read
4:38
it online uh I tend to take in stuff
4:41
from pictures uh rather than reading a
4:43
lot of the times
4:47
and it's good to find different books to
4:50
read and find information out on a lot
4:52
of the stuff I explain to you I do
4:56
research on it uh because I don't want
4:58
to be giving you all the wrong
4:59
information
5:00
I like to find out stuff for myself
5:02
first and then I like to share it with
5:04
you uh save you doing all that hard
5:08
work but yeah I'm always forever reading
5:11
gardening books and the best gardening
5:13
book that I've got is the a lot month by
5:16
month one uh which shares with you all
5:18
different tips and advice on what to do
5:20
each month uh it's a fantastic book and
5:23
I do recommend it and yeah gardening
5:26
books can be expensive to buy um but
5:30
sometimes what I recommend which I saw
5:33
somebody else do it on Instagram
5:35
yesterday um they go around charity
5:37
shops and have a look in there and I've
5:42
done that and I got addicted to doing
5:44
that at one point I had to stop going to
5:46
the charity shops uh because I buying
5:49
that many gardening books I bought one
5:52
gardening book what was like an
5:54
encyclopedia and it should have been
5:56
like
5:58
£40 and I got it for for £1 I thought
6:01
wow now that is a fantastic bargain and
6:05
it's a brilliant book it's absolutely
6:07
jam-packed it must have took years to
6:09
write um but it's a fantastic book so if
6:14
you've got any charity shops around you
6:16
go and have a look around see what
6:18
Bargains you can buy even if it's
6:21
Ā£23 it's still cheaper than buying it
6:23
from uh the big retailers and you more
6:27
often than that you will find some
6:28
fantastic gardening books in there
6:31
because same goes for car boot sales as
6:33
well people buy these books uh getting
6:36
into the Hobby and they realize that
6:38
they don't want them in the end so they
6:40
take them to car boot sales or give them
6:42
to charity shops because they'll never
6:44
read them again and they get rid of them
6:46
and you can pick up some fantastic
6:48
Bargains and that's what I've done I
6:50
must have about 20 gardening books and
6:53
there's still some out there that I want
6:55
to get so I may have to start going to
6:57
those charity shops again and have a
6:59
look around and seeing what Bargains I
7:01
can
7:02
get and obviously there's the magazines
7:05
as well and those episodes will be
7:08
coming up again soon um I'll be buying
7:11
the kitchen Garden Magazine and the grow
7:13
your own magazine I buy them on a
7:15
monthly basis they're full of
7:17
information on what you need to do that
7:19
month well the next coming month uh and
7:22
also it's jam packed full of seeds and
7:25
each episode I like to share with you
7:27
what seeds will come in that uh magazine
7:30
and that'll set you back about6 for the
7:33
magazine but you'll get 10 free packets
7:35
of seeds obviously they're not free
7:36
because you paid for them in the
7:38
magazine but6 for 10 packets of
7:41
seeds fantastic buy and you get all the
7:45
information on how to grow them as well
7:48
which really does help so have a look
7:50
around don't always listen to people
7:53
because they think they know it all but
7:56
also do listen to people sometimes
7:58
because they find easy great ways of
8:02
growing stuff sometimes and sometimes
8:05
from doing mistakes that is how new
8:08
methods are found and it's fantastic
8:11
that people do try stuff and don't get
8:14
put off by people saying no I won't do
8:16
it like that and trying the method and
8:19
trying the new way and yeah getting
8:22
great results from it so have a look
8:24
around have a look and find some great
8:26
gardening books out there let me know
8:29
send me a message what is your favorite
8:31
