1:41
brute and enjoy today's
1:45
episode hello and welcome back to
1:48
gardening with Ben for a brand new
1:50
podcast it's been a few days since our
1:53
last podcast but we're back with another
1:55
one and yeah we've got a few days off
1:57
work now so we're back here recording in
2:00
some more podcasts for you to listen to
2:02
while you're out in the garden in the
2:04
alotment walk in your dog or sat with
2:07
your morning Brew well we're back with
2:10
another episode and today it's Saturday
2:13
and I really do wish summer would
2:17
come I think we're we're all wishing
2:19
that at the moment one week it's
2:21
absolutely boiling and then the rest
2:23
it's back to raining miserable UK
2:26
weather which we'd expect in winter time
2:29
but it's still quite warm and we're
2:32
still getting lots of produce off to be
2:34
honest with you we've been down at the
2:36
allotment today and yeah I've had a busy
2:39
day down there and today's job has
2:42
mainly been weeding as per
2:46
usual always lots of weeding to be done
2:49
and watering yes watering it's not
2:52
rained here much in Sheffield so I've
2:55
had to water it like when I've been
2:57
digging and stuff it's been quite damp
2:59
on top top but really bone dry
3:01
underneath so we've been giving plenty
3:04
of water to the crops
3:07
today and also I've been harvesting I've
3:10
been harvesting my Peas My peas are
3:13
absolutely getting ready and we're
3:16
picking loads of those off at the moment
3:18
and they taste absolutely delicious I'm
3:20
so happy with how well we've done with
3:24
the peas this year this has probably
3:26
been the best crop that I've ever had on
3:28
my allotment site and more often than
3:31
not I've had them eaten in the past by
3:33
mice Birds pigeons you name it they've
3:37
all been eaten but this year we've had a
3:39
fantastic crop and I think it's all down
3:42
to how well I protected them this year
3:44
from the animals and the elements I
3:47
started them off in my shed in seed
3:50
trays to grew them to a decent height
3:53
and then once they were ready I
3:54
transplanted them all outside into the
3:56
ground and we made sure we covered them
3:59
with plenty of netting so that nothing
4:02
could attack him and it worked really
4:04
well and I've had a fantastic crop and
4:08
I've got loads more left to pick like
4:10
this is the second picking I've had and
4:13
yeah we've still got loads more on there
4:15
and obviously if we keep picking them
4:16
hopefully they'll keep flowering and
4:18
they'll keep harvesting but we have
4:21
planted a late crop as well the other
4:24
week so hopefully we'll get a late
4:26
croper piece towards the end of the year
4:29
fingers crossed and again we've given
4:31
them plenty of protection to stop them
4:33
from getting eaten and nibbled away
4:36
hopefully the mice and the Rats don't
4:38
find them and eat them but touch wood
4:40
they're still growing pretty well at the
4:42
moment and we keeping them watered and
4:46
not we're keeping them a bit Weed Free
4:48
obviously we get quite a lot of weeds
4:50
growing but we're keeping them uh plenty
4:52
of weed free and you need some weeds as
4:55
well anyway because it deters the slugs
4:57
from eating them all if it will
4:58
completely Weed Free the Slugs that go
5:00
for them so that's my excuse anyway and
5:04
that's what I'm sticking to we've also
5:06
been
5:07
busy working on our website at the
5:10
moment we're getting that built so that
5:12
we can bring you more information and
5:13
share more tips and advice with you and
5:16
also I've launched a new newsletter
5:19
what's going to be coming out in August
5:22
hopefully it will produce regular
5:24
updates for you all and sharing with you
5:26
what's going off
5:28
and what's happened on our social media
5:30
and just sharing daily tips and regular
5:33
advice with you all to help teach you
5:37
and show you what I'm getting up to down
5:38
at the allotment so there should be a
5:41
link in the description so that you can
5:44
sign up to the newsletter to get these
5:45
updates so all you have to do is click
5:48
on the link and fill in your name and
5:51
your email address and then you will
5:53
receive regular updates from me as well
5:57
and we'll be sharing regular updates of
5:58
when we upload new YouTube videos
6:01
sharing the podcasts sharing regular
6:04
tips and advice with you all so make
6:06
sure you all click it and sign up to the
6:09
newsletter we've already had quite a few
6:12
people signed up already so thank you
6:13
for those that have recently signed up
6:16
to it and I hope you enjoy it I'm trying
6:19
to bring you as much content as possible
6:21
and share lots and lots of tips and
6:23
advice with you we've also recently been
6:26
featured on msn.com as well sharing what
6:31
I get out of gardening from my mental
6:33
health to the fresh produce and all the
6:36
Delights of having an allotment and yeah
6:39
that got posted on MSN uh the other day
6:43
I did share it on my Instagram for you
6:46
to see and on my Facebook page so if
6:49
you've not seen it go on to my Facebook
6:51
page because it'll still be there and
6:53
the link should be there for you to read
6:55
as well so have a look at that so the
6:58
website will be launching soon we're
7:00
working hard on that at the moment and
7:03
hopefully lots more stuff will be coming
7:06
onto it so what else are we getting up
7:08
to this weekend well tomorrow I might do
7:10
some more harvesting I've got some
7:12
lettuce ready for harvesting as it's
7:15
starting to get to the end of it now and
7:17
it's starting to turn so we need to get
7:19
that lettuce harvested and eaten we've
7:22
also got some beetroot to harvest
7:25
they're looking quite big at the moment
7:27
so we're going to harvest some beetroot
7:29
I'm going to try them in my air fryer uh
7:31
I'm going to be looking up recipes and
7:33
seeing how I can actually try cooking
7:35
them in the air fryer I'm also going to
7:37
try and cook some potatoes in the air
7:40
fryer as like really thin slices as well
7:44
so hopefully we'll see how well they get
7:46
on and I'll be sharing a picture with
7:48
you how well we get on with them we've
7:50
also got some more loganberries to
7:52
harvest I noticed quite a lot of red
7:54
ones on there as well so make sure I get
7:58
all them pck because every time I go
8:01
down to the alotment the black bird
8:03
flies off so I know it's hanging around
8:06
eating stuff at the moment so that black
8:08
bird must be getting absolutely fat off
8:10
all my fruit and everything at the
8:12
moment and I see it around my fuches a
8:14
lot as well so I don't know if they like
8:16
eating fuches so I'm keeping an eye on
8:19
Mr Blackbird uh obviously I don't mind
8:22
him being there eating some of the fruit
8:24
so he can help himself to some of it but
8:27
I'd best pick some for my own self as
8:30
well but I have got to watch him next
8:32
year because he ate all my gooseberries
8:35
so we need to make sure that our gooseb
8:38
are well protected next year from Mr
8:41
blackbird so that he doesn't eat them
8:43
all and I want some next year yeah every
8:46
single one of them he must like gooseb
8:49
black birds must like them so if you
8:51
wanted to feed your black birds get some
8:53
gooseb cuz they'll absolutely love them
8:56
so yeah that is one thing I do need to
8:58
make sure of next year
8:59
but yeah hopefully we're going to get
9:03
some tomato plants sorted out tomorrow I
9:06
we looking at them outside in my garden
9:09
and they
9:10
are getting quite big now they're not
9:13
growing as fast as what they grow in my
9:15
Greenhouse or the poly tunnel but they
9:17
are getting quite big now so we need to
9:19
start supporting them we need to put
9:21
some canes up them we need to nip off
9:24
all the little shoots off them to make
9:26
them grow nice and tall and focus on
9:29
growing the fruit as well there's lots
9:31
of flowers coming on them so they are
9:33
doing pretty well but like I said
9:36
they're not growing as fast as what they
9:37
would do inside a poly tunnel or
9:40
Greenhouse but the reason why I grow
9:42
them outside is so that they keep
9:44
watered if they're in my poly tunnel
9:46
they'd soon dry out and I'd probably
9:49
risk getting the Tomato split and stuff
9:51
like that through un uneven watering so
9:55
that's one of the reasons why I grew all
9:56
my tomatoes outside so that we do get a
10:00
good crop of
10:01
them so we've got all them to do
10:04
tomorrow we've also got to have a look
10:07
at what other seeds we're going to start
10:08
planting we're going to carry on
10:10
planting some more seeds so that we get
10:12
a long Harvest of produce we'll probably
10:16
look into growing some beetroot some Mal
10:18
Lattis I want to get some Mal ltis in
10:21
we'll probably plant some spring onions
10:23
possibly some carrots some more carrots
10:26
so we need to look into that and we need
10:28
to look into planting some more potatoes
10:29
as well as I'm starting to harvest all
10:32
my early potatoes now so we need to get
10:34
some more potatoes in so that we get
10:36
another crop later on in the year and
10:39
hopefully these will be ready by
10:41
possibly beginning of October something
10:44
like that and if it gets colder then
10:47
we'll move them into the poly tunnel so
10:49
that they don't get killed off by the
10:50
frost or anything so hopefully we're
10:53
going to get some more potatoes in so if
10:55
you wanted to grow some more potatoes
10:57
now is a good time to start planting so
10:59
that you get a lat crop
11:01
obviously they won't sell seed potatoes
11:04
and stuff like that in the garden
11:05
centers now so if you wanted to grow
11:08
potatoes I'm going to be growing them
11:10
from the supermarket ones yes people do
11:12
say that they can cause issues but my
11:16
dad has grown them from the supermarket
11:18
for years and years and he's had never
11:21
had a single issue growing them so we're
11:24
going to have a look into growing some
11:26
more so yeah that has been what we've
11:28
been up to down at the allotment
11:30
tomorrow hopefully we'll get another
11:32
episode for you tomorrow it'll probably
11:34
be another late one as obviously I'm
11:36
going to be talking about what being up
11:37
to at the allotment so make sure you
11:39
