What vegetables to grow in November.
0:03
Welcome to Gardening with Ben. And in
0:06
today's video, we're going to tell you
0:07
what vegetables you can get planted in
0:09
November. Yes, it may be a few days into
0:12
November, but there's still lots of
0:14
stuff that you can be planting ready for
0:16
harvesting next year. So, if you want to
0:19
stay gardening throughout the winter
0:21
period, these are the perfect vegetables
0:24
to be growing down at the a lotment or
0:26
in the garden. If you've got a garden
0:28
that you can grow these in. So, first up
0:32
are broad beans. These need to be a
0:35
winter variety of broad bean if you're
0:37
growing them. And the variety that I've
0:40
gone for is Aquadul Claudia. Now, that
0:43
is a great variety to grow through the
0:45
winter period. I've got some growing in
0:47
my garden at the moment. I've planted
0:49
them straight into the ground. The thing
0:51
is, if you plant them straight into the
0:53
ground, make sure you protect them from
0:55
the birds as the there's not much
0:57
vegetation around at the moment, so the
0:59
birds will like to eat them and pet them
1:02
off. And also, rats and mice will sniff
1:05
them out and take the seed. So, make
1:08
sure you keep them protected and keep
1:10
them growing. Mine are growing
1:11
fantastic. I've got them netted over and
1:13
yeah, they're growing absolutely
1:15
amazing. Fingers crossed they'll be
1:17
ready for next year. And the thing is
1:18
about growing them at this time of year
1:20
is that they will be ready to harvest
1:22
before the blackfly appear. Obviously,
1:24
you can start them off in March, April
1:25
time, but when you're harvesting them
1:27
around June, July time, they are prone
1:30
to blackfly. So, growing them now will
1:32
get them ready before the blackfly
1:34
appear.
1:36
Next up is onions. Now, if you're
1:39
growing onions, make sure they're a
1:40
winter variety. They're probably the
1:42
only variety that you can buy at this
1:43
time of year. But have a look online or
1:46
in garden centers, and usually they'll
1:48
sell bags of sets of onions ready for
1:51
you to plant straight in the ground.
1:52
Again, like the broad beans, make sure
1:54
you keep them netted as birds do love to
1:57
pull the stalks out and pull them out
1:59
and then you end up shoving them back in
2:00
again. So, yeah, keep them netted and
2:02
keep them protected until they get
2:04
growing.
2:06
Next up is garlic. Now, a great winter
2:09
classic to get growing at this time of
2:11
year. The reason why we grow garlic at
2:13
this time of year is because it needs
2:15
the cold weather to split the clove to
2:18
create the garlic itself and to form the
2:21
cloves which form the full bulb. So,
2:25
have a look around again in garden
2:26
centers or online and you can get
2:28
growing some garlic now. And also have a
2:31
try at growing elephant garlic as well
2:33
because that'll grow you massive bulbs
2:36
and you can use it in plenty of your
2:38
cooking and they'll usually be ready
2:40
around June time. You usually harvest
2:43
garlic on the longest day which is in
2:47
June.
2:49
Next up is to start early peas in pots
2:52
undercover. Now, if you're wanting an
2:54
early harvest of peas, you can start
2:57
them off indoors in your poly tunnel or
2:59
greenhouse. Plant them out and get them
3:02
growing throughout the winter period.
3:03
Again, you need a strong hardy variety.
3:06
So, have a look around and make sure you
3:07
get the correct variety for growing your
3:10
peas throughout the winter and they will
3:12
probably be one of the first things to
3:14
harvest next year.
3:16
If you've got a poly tunnel or a
3:18
greenhouse, a great thing to grow is
3:21
spinach and winter lettuce. Now, poly
3:24
tunnels and green houses do stay
3:28
a bit warm. Not brilliantly warm, but
3:30
they do stay warm. If you've got
3:31
heaters, fantastic. You can have your
3:34
heisters on. But one way of keeping the
3:36
poly tunnels warm if you've not got a
3:38
heater is have a water butt inside.
3:42
Having a water butt inside when the
3:44
sun's out in the daytime, the water will
3:46
absorb the heat and it will let it out
3:48
at night, keeping the poly tunnel a bit
3:50
warmer and a bit more better for growing
3:53
stuff in. And yeah, have a go at growing
3:56
it and see how you get on. If you're
3:58
wanting to grow stuff all through
3:59
winter, they are perfect things to grow.
4:03
Next up is spring onions. Another great
4:07
thing for growing, obviously get the
4:09
word from spring. If you sew them now,
4:11
you'll be harvesting them in springtime.
4:14
And yeah, you can grow those outdoors
4:16
throughout the winter period. Hardy
4:17
variety of vegetable and see how you get
4:21
on.
4:22
Another thing you can grow through the
4:24
winter period, but you need to have
4:25
planted these by now is kale and
4:28
cabbage, but protect them from the
4:30
pests, protect them from the pigeons.
4:32
Pigeons do love them. And yeah, kale's a
4:35
great thing to grow through the winter.
4:36
It's a hardy veg to grow and you can be
4:39
harvesting it all the way up to
4:41
Christmas. And finally, make sure you
4:44
prepare your beds ready for next year by
4:46
adding a lay of compost, digging them
4:48
over, getting rid of all those weeds,
4:50
and getting them all prepared for the
4:53
next growing season next year. Winter
4:57
doesn't stop at the aotment. It's a time
4:59
for preparing and getting all the plot
5:01
ready and getting it all in shape so
5:03
that you're not rushing at the last
5:04
minute once you start sewing all those
5:07
seeds. That takes up all your time
5:09
sewing them, potting them up, keeping
5:11
them watered. So, get all the hard jobs
5:14
done now ready for next year. I hope
5:16
you've enjoyed this. If you know anybody
5:18
that grows veg or interested in growing
5:20
veg, make sure you share it to them.
