0:25
and welcome back to gardening with Ben
0:29
well if you seen all my posts online
0:31
today spring is in the air it certainly
0:35
is it don't arrive until later this
0:37
month but it certainly felt like spring
0:40
today definitely and the weather is
0:43
being absolutely fantastic this morning
0:46
and this afternoon it's getting cooler
0:47
now as I'm recording this but it has
0:50
been a fantastic day for gardening and I
0:54
hope you've all managed to get out in
0:55
the gardens or in the allotments and got
0:58
some work done and enjoyed being out in
1:00
the fresh air like I always do because
1:03
that's the thing that I enjoy the most
1:05
about being in the alotment you're just
1:07
outside in nature just in the fresh air
1:11
I go down Come Rain Come Shine I'm
1:14
always down at the alotment whenever I
1:16
get chance to go when I'm not working
1:19
and I certainly make the most of it and
1:21
today I certainly did that and I didn't
1:24
get home till like half 3 today and I
1:26
got there at about 10:00 so I've spent
1:29
spent a good amount of time there today
1:32
and if it's like this tomorrow fingers
1:34
crossed I may be there even longer
1:37
because I'm working on my new area uh
1:41
which I've been talking about quite a
1:42
bit which is my new fruit area uh the
1:46
bit that I've been concentrating on and
1:49
spending the most money on at the
1:51
moment and when I'm saying I'm improving
1:55
it um I've planted all my strawberries
1:58
in this area uh I planted those about a
2:01
couple of months ago um I also planted
2:05
two Victoria plum trees which I got
2:07
cheap from Tesco they've been reduced to
2:10
£260 from £7 so I couldn't resist not
2:14
buying them uh I bought two red goberry
2:18
plants which hopefully will have some
2:21
delicious fruit on them I bought two
2:26
blueberries for it as well I've bought
2:29
three forless black Brees I've I've
2:34
purchased my Great Vine which I forgot
2:36
to check on today actually uh I planted
2:39
it about 4 days ago so I should have
2:40
checked on it really so that's what I
2:42
need to do tomorrow I'll remember to
2:44
check on it and see how well it's
2:45
growing I've also planted loads of
2:49
Summer raspberry canes which have grown
2:51
in the wrong place so I've dug them up
2:53
and planted them in this fruit area so
2:56
yeah this fruit patch is going to be
2:59
absolutely like fantastic once it takes
3:02
R it'll take a couple of years for it
3:03
all to get going and Get Growing uh but
3:06
yeah it's going to look absolutely
3:08
amazing in a couple of years time and
3:11
I'm really pleased with how it's looking
3:13
up to now but I'd just planted them I've
3:16
not I've not tided up the area or
3:19
anything like that and as I've been
3:22
saying this month for me is maintenance
3:24
month down at the allotment uh I've done
3:27
all the digging over I've got everything
3:30
ready for this year and now I'm doing
3:33
all my improvements what need do into
3:35
the plot the bits that I've been putting
3:37
off at the moment because I wanted to
3:39
get it all dug over and stuff ready for
3:41
the springtime really ready for planting
3:44
out when it comes to it uh so this month
3:47
is all about maintenance and doing any
3:49
fixing doing any improvements making it
3:52
look nicer uh tifying it if that's a
3:56
word uh but yeah definitely doing all
3:59
the improve movements and one thing
4:01
about this area is that I'd built my bed
4:04
too big I couldn't walk down the paths
4:06
because I've got massive feet I've got
4:08
size 12 feet uh and I couldn't fit my
4:11
feet down the paths so I've had to widen
4:13
them to make it sure that I can fit my
4:15
feet down I tend to usually leave enough
4:18
space for a Paving slab uh that's the
4:22
usual width that I usually leave for my
4:24
um paths even though they've not got
4:26
Paving slabs down what I do is I create
4:29
it to make it wide enough just in case I
4:32
manag to get a hold of some and then I
4:34
can put them straight down on top of the
4:36
black membrane and yeah they become a
4:38
path then and eventually fingers crossed
4:40
we will get all the allotment paved all
4:44
the paths paved that is the plan over
4:46
the years uh I keep getting a few more
4:49
Paving slabs every single year and keep
4:51
doing it up so yeah it's all coming
4:53
together pretty well at the moment so
4:56
I'm looking forward to that so we've
4:58
been widening the paths the next job was
5:01
to put up some to reput my fencing not
5:04
put new fencing reput up my fencing uh
5:07
I've been collecting old pieces of wood
5:09
over the years like you do I'm addicted
5:12
to wood if you've got an allotment you
5:14
will know what I mean by being addicted
5:16
to wood if you see wood you will collect
5:18
it and you will use it eventually uh but
5:22
I had a massive pile of wood on my plot
5:24
and I was making trying to make use of
5:27
it so I built myself a rubbish but a
5:31
picky fence down the side of my plot uh
5:33
just to make the most of this wood
5:36
really and to just like give it
5:39
some allotment
5:41
luck but yeah um i' put all this fencing
5:44
up the other year and I'd not put it up
5:47
strong enough and it all collapsed
5:49
during the winter uh so it's a case of
5:52
having to put fresh new posts in which I
5:56
got free from uh being C the posts uh
5:58
they have like wood area uh where you
6:01
can collect offcuts of wood and there
6:03
was some posts in it so I collected them
6:05
and used them so yeah uh I've put all
6:08
that up and then I've refastened all the
6:11
fencing back up so that is all secure
6:15
now and it's starting to look good again
6:17
and come April I'm using that as my
6:20
painting time so I'm going to be
6:22
painting all my plot in April uh all my
6:25
beds all my fencing everything that's
6:28
made out of wood I will be painted it to
6:30
give it a lick paint and to Spruce it up
6:33
and to make it look good um so yeah uh I
6:38
I set myself these little tasks and I
6:41
complete them if you set yourself little
6:43
tasks like you do uh it's a good way of
6:46
getting things done and getting things
6:49
completed on time and that's what I tend
6:51
to do just create myself little lists
6:53
nothing too drastic and try and get it
6:56
all
6:57
completed uh and each day i' go I do a
7:00
bit more and yeah that's how I've
7:02
managed to get on top of my plot and get
7:04
it all ready for this time of year I'm
7:06
really impressed with how it's all
7:08
coming along pretty well at the moment
7:10
it's starting to take shape really good
7:13
and the areas are looking
7:15
fantastic uh once I've got it all sorted
7:19
it will look the best plot in
7:22
Sheffield or the UK or wherever you're
7:25
listening but yeah uh I'm really pleased
7:27
with how it's coming along so we've done
7:29
all that today um tomorrow's job will be
7:35
to I've got this green house what I've
7:37
built and it's got some pooline down the
7:40
side but I want to put up some wood on
7:45
the shed to try and grow plants on the
7:48
side of the shed I see all this where
7:51
people growing stuff in guttering and
7:52
stuff like that and I have got some
7:54
gutter in again if you see stuff you
7:56
collect it and you don't always use it
7:58
so I've got this guttering on the
8:00
allotment and I want to make use of it
8:02
and I want to spruce up the side of my
8:04
shed to make it look better uh than it
8:06
does at the moment and make it more
8:08
colorful and attractive really obviously
8:11
if you're planting stuff in guttering
8:13
you will need to keep it watered well
8:15
because obviously it'll dry out faster
8:17
cuz it's not very deep and obviously the
8:20
rain won't get in it as easy so you do
8:22
need to keep things watered if you're
8:24
growing stuff in
8:25
guttering but yeah I'm thinking about
8:28
Mery possibly grow some mixed lettuce
8:30
leaves in it and stuff like that also I
8:33
may po uh put some strawberries in it I
8:36
may put
8:38
some herbs in them but yeah I want to
8:42
make it a green living shed if you get
8:45
me uh add lots of greenery and color to
8:49
it and make it look nice rather than a
8:51
dull old shed uh so yeah that is my plan
8:54
to get some guttering up tomorrow so
8:56
we'll see how we get on with that like I
8:58
said I'm not very good at diy things
9:01
don't always last uh but yeah hopefully
9:05
we can get it all up and get it all
9:07
sorted and I can't wait to show you what
9:10
it looks like as obviously I do keep
9:12
sharing stuff on Instagram and on
9:14
Facebook so if you're not following me
9:16
on Instagram and Facebook give me a
9:18
follow gardening with Ben and you will
9:21
be able to see all the photos and how
9:23
things are coming along pretty well on
9:24
the plot and hopefully you'll be as
9:27
impressed as I am because like I say
9:29
I've had my plot for 16 years and each
9:32
year I just keep doing a few more
9:34
improvements to it and making it look
9:36
better uh nicer and easier and
9:39
manageable uh the manageable bits the
9:41
main key area of gardening uh making
9:44
sure that you can keep on top of it and
9:46
get things done so yeah it's it's been a
9:50
good day today and like I said hopefully
9:54
it'll be another good day tomorrow I'll
9:56
only be down on the plot three days this
9:58
week uh
10:00
swapping from nights to days I
10:03
obviously am asleep most of the day on
10:06
the day that I finished so I lose a day
10:10
uh but yeah 3 days down at the allotment
10:12
hopefully get this fruit area finished
10:15
and then I'll be moving on to a new area
10:18
and doing some more maintenance on that
10:20
for the 4 days that I'll be off next
10:22
time so yeah it's all starting to come
10:25
together pretty good we've got until end
10:27
of the march to get all of the
10:30
maintenance were done down at the plot
10:33
and we're nearly halfway through so yeah
10:36
I've nearly got half of the plot done so
10:38
yeah I'm impressed with how it's all
10:40
coming along and like I said now the
10:42
days are lighter it's half 6 when the
10:45
sun comes up in the morning now so I'll
10:48
be down there a lot earlier I'll be
10:50
going down at possibly 7:00 in the
10:52
morning soon and I usually come home at
10:55
a dinner time but today I stay till half
10:58
2 3:00 so yeah I I'll start spending
11:01
more and more time down at the allotment
11:03
and hopefully we'll get much more
11:06
completed down at the plot and getting
11:08
things in shape for the year to come and
11:12
I just can't wait for this year this I I
11:14
was such ashamed of my plot last year
11:17
really was uh I couldn't spend half the
11:20
time I wanted to spend down there last
11:23
year so this year I'm putting my
11:25
absolutely all into it and I'm going to
11:27
be showcasing it to H
11:29
of my uh pictures uh and definitely now
11:33
that all the spring bulbs are coming up
11:34
there'll be plenty of spring bulb
11:36
pictures and plenty of selfies in front
11:39
of the flowers uh because you can't get
11:41
enough
11:43
selfies but yeah if you are new to this
