1:38

1:42
today's
1:45
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
1:48
gardening with Ben for hopefully another
1:52
long episode for you to listen to today
1:54
well today we have been down at our
1:57
alotment obviously this is out on Sunday
2:00
but I've recorded it on Saturday we've
2:02
had a absolute busy busy day down at the
2:07
plot today and yes I'm starting to feel
2:10
the cold while I'm down at the alotment
2:12
so I need to start wrapping up it it's
2:14
obviously still good temperatures out
2:16
there but after I'd been down there for
2:18
a bit I was starting to feel the cold
2:21
and I was ready to come home and get
2:22
back in the warmth again and it's not
2:25
even winter yet so we've got all this to
2:28
come but I do love being down there
2:30
especially at this time of year it's
2:32
nice weather to be down and it's been a
2:35
perfect day for gardening no rain no
2:39
bitter showers or any cold wind or
2:41
anything like that it was just a decent
2:44
day down there so what have we been up
2:48
to today at the alotment we've been
2:50
having a little bit of fun if you've not
2:51
watched any of my latest videos we had
2:54
ET down at the alotment and if you watch
2:57
the videos you'll find out why ET was
2:59
down down
3:00
there but yeah we're having a little bit
3:03
of fun down there and also when I got
3:06
down to the alotment today I usually go
3:08
into my shed and give uh put some food
3:12
out for the cat what's around on the
3:14
alotment the kittens aren't around
3:16
anymore they've moved on but the main
3:18
cat is still around so we usually give
3:21
it some food and I went into my shed and
3:24
wow my dad had been busy all week while
3:27
I've been at work Tiding up in my shed
3:30
sorting things out moving things around
3:33
and yeah he started doing some work for
3:35
me in the shed and making some
3:37
improvements down there for me which has
3:39
been absolutely fantastic of him as
3:42
obviously I want to get it all renovated
3:44
through the winter period uh get it all
3:46
repainted and looking good but yeah my
3:49
dad's being busy in there tidying up and
3:52
doing a few odd jobs which I don't get a
3:54
chance to do and my dad's better at
3:56
doing them than me sometimes but yeah my
3:58
dad's
4:00
he's not young himself so I always worry
4:03
about him being down there doing stuff
4:05
and uh burning himself out but he enjoys
4:09
going out and being active still while
4:11
he can and while he can make the most of
4:14
it moving around down on the allotment
4:17
but yeah my dad's obviously got an
4:19
allotment and he's been busy on his plot
4:21
Tiding it all up ready for winter but he
4:23
must have thought oh I like going down
4:26
there's not much left to do on my plot
4:27
I'll go and do some bits for Ben which
4:30
has been a blessing in disguise so yeah
4:33
big shout out to my dad and my dad's the
4:35
one that got me into gardening and again
4:39
his dad to got him into it because he
4:41
used to grow all fruit and vegetables
4:43
and look after his garden and everything
4:45
like that so it does run down in the
4:48
jeans
4:49
and yeah I've been very busy obviously
4:52
yesterday I talked about all the jobs
4:54
that I wanted to do down at the alotment
4:56
I didn't get chance to do them all but I
4:58
got a lot of the jobs done which I had
5:01
written down to do and one of my main
5:05
jobs this weekend is to clear at the top
5:07
of my plot which looks absolutely
5:10
atrocious they were bind weed all over
5:12
there were leaves all over the place
5:13
from the trees what had fallen down you
5:15
couldn't see the paths you couldn't see
5:17
the beds what up at the top of the plot
5:19
where the herbs have been growing uh
5:21
there like mint up there and stuff like
5:23
that because there nothing else what
5:25
will grow much up in the area cuz it's a
5:27
shaded area so we just stuck some bits
5:30
in and yeah I managed to get half of
5:34
that done which was what I wanted to do
5:37
I set myself an alarm clock uh as I like
5:39
to schedule things and tick things off
5:42
as I do them to fit everything in so I
5:44
set myself an alarm clock of time to do
5:46
it in and I managed to get it all done
5:48
what I wanted to do to do there's still
5:51
a lot more to do of that area but we'll
5:54
finish that off tomorrow fingers crossed
5:56
we might have to go into next weekend to
5:58
finish it all off cuz it's a it's an
6:01
area that I don't look after much it's
6:03
just an area what I've just tided up to
6:05
make it look smart if you get me uh it's
6:08
not an area that I'm too fussed about
6:11
but obviously we have to keep them
6:12
looking tidy for inspections and stuff
6:15
like that on the allotment which we
6:16
unfortunately we get so we have to make
6:18
sure it's SP and span for
6:20
them but yeah I've been busy doing all
6:23
that and obviously I've been doing some
6:26
videos as well for you to to watch uh
6:29
I'm to do a video for every day on
6:32
YouTube that is my plan that is my
6:34
target obviously I'm doing a podcast
6:36
every day for you and obviously when I'm
6:39
down at the allotment at the weekend I
6:40
have to try and film six episodes for
6:43
you all to watch like different little
6:45
short little videos for you all to watch
6:47
which is obviously getting that done
6:49
doing my allotment it's quite a push but
6:51
we are managing to do it so what have we
6:55
done down at the allotment today as well
6:57
as clear the top area well today we have
7:00
been
7:02
busy harvesting my Christmas potatoes
7:07
yes I've harvested my Christmas potatoes
7:10
I were expecting them to be ready around
7:11
December time but the plants have died
7:14
off and I thought well they're not going
7:17
to grow anymore now I might as well
7:18
Harvest them so that was one video what
7:23
which I filmed which is on YouTube now
7:25
if you want to go and have a look of me
7:27
harvesting my Christmas potatoes and
7:29
I'll let you you see how well we
7:30
actually did now I'm happy with the
7:33
results of them but one of them uh was a
7:36
complete failure um but
7:39
three boxes of the potatoes did
7:43
absolutely fantastic and I've brought a
7:46
load home so I'm going to be eating
7:48
chippies now for the next few weeks
7:51
which is fantastic cuz I just shove them
7:53
in the air fry I've got a special
7:55
chipper what just chops them into chipsy
7:57
shapes and I just stick them in the air
7:59
fry for 10 minutes and they tastes
8:01
absolutely delicious and there's a
8:03
seasoning out there I don't know if
8:05
you've tried it but it's to make them
8:08
cheesy chips so I just stick them in a
8:11
bowl and sprinkle some of this on and
8:12
mix it all in and then put them in the
8:14
air FR for 10 minutes and they taste
8:16
Absolut like gorgeous um absolutely over
8:20
the moon with them so I've got them to
8:22
last me for a few months which will keep
8:24
me going which is saving me money
8:27
obviously so they'll be having with my
8:30
tea every single night we'll be having
8:32
some chippers throughout the winter
8:34
period which is good because obviously
8:37
you're spreading the produce out over
8:39
the winter period as well so if you're
8:42
having to go out and buy
8:44
stuff and what else have we been up to
8:47
we have sorted out all my sweet peas
8:50
I've been showing in my tour video
8:52
recently of my sweet peas and they were
8:55
all becoming Lego and I wanted to uh
8:59
pinch them them back and I explain about
9:01
that in the video which will be coming
9:03
this week that pinching them back helps
9:06
push them out they'll be smaller flowers
9:08
on them but they'll be more bushier and
9:11
they'll get more flowers on them um
9:14
whereas if you usually leave them not
9:16
pinched out they'll grow bigger flowers
9:19
on them and bigger Longer stalks on the
9:21
flowers so that is a reason so if you're
9:24
wanting them to look like a nice display
9:27
pinch them out to keep them Bush it but
9:29
if you wanted them for VES and stuff
9:31
like that I suggest not pinching them
9:33
out so we'll talk about that more in
9:35
another episode later on down the
9:38
line what else have we done as geraniums
9:41
we finally dug them all up out of the
9:43
ground before the frost comes we've not
9:45
had a frost at all this year so far well
9:49
this winter Autumn winter we've not had
9:51
a frost yet which is amazing like at
9:54
this time of year you've usually had a
9:56
frost at least but we've not had no
9:58
frosts around here whatsoever so I've
10:00
managed to get them out before the frost
10:02
gets them and kills them and we' potted
10:04
them all up we put them in my shed and
10:07
we're going to keep them watered and
10:09
hopefully look after them throughout the
10:10
winter period and keep them keep them
10:13
alive because that's what we want to do
10:16
so we've got that all sorted and that's
10:21
another job ticks off my list so we've
10:24
got quite a few more jobs left to do
10:26
down at the allotment tomorrow obviously
10:28
I do my weekly tour video which I'm
10:30
going to be doing down there and I'm
10:32
filming my blog of what I get up to down
10:35
at the alotment as well but there's
10:38
quite a few other videos which I want to
10:39
film and we need to sort a Salvia out
10:43
tomorrow I'm going to be sorting them
10:45
out for a video for you all to watch um
10:48
I took some cuttings earlier in the year
10:50
and they've rooted they've took well and
10:54
I just want to put them into bigger pots
10:57
fresh compost and T them up and give
11:00
them a big boost and then I'll be
11:03
planting them out next year in my
11:05
allotment so we want to encourage them
11:08
to grow better and keep on looking
11:10
better and hopefully we'll get some nice
11:12
Salvia plants next year for free which
11:15
is always a burners being a yorkman we
11:17
always like everything for free or cheap
11:19
or half price but yeah um I'm looking
11:24
forward to next year we're putting a lot
11:26
of effort into my allotment this year
11:27
obviously like I said I've not got as
11:30
much time down there I've only got two
11:32
days a week down there at the moment
11:34
throughout the winter period obviously
11:35
when it gets to Summer and lighter
11:37
nights I can stay down there later but
11:39
we are only there for the weekends at
11:42
the moment for a few hours and like I
11:43
say it gets cold so I want in to come
11:45
home after a short while down there so
11:49
we've got the Salvia to sort out
11:51
tomorrow we've obviously got the rest of
11:53
the top area of my plot to sort out and
11:56
finish off and which other job jobs are
11:59
down on my list I want to sort some of
12:01
my paths out hopefully uh we're going to
12:03
be doing that and there's nothing else
12:07
really down there what I need to
12:09
actually get done and sorted um there's
12:13
nothing burning to get done which is
12:16
good I'm I'm on top of stuff um in front
12:20
I've got a lot of it cleared and ready
12:22
for next year so yeah it'll be a case of
12:24
just once I've cleared this top out OFA
12:27
it'll be a case of just Tiding it all up
12:28
and sorting my beds out and screwing
12:30
them all back together and then painting
12:32
them all next year but my allotment is
12:35
coming on fantastic I'm happy with how
12:37
it's all looking and it's looking
12:39
fantastic and then obviously through the
12:42
main winter period it'll be the time
12:43
when I'm sprucing up all my shed getting
12:46
it all painted like I said I want a new
12:49
potting shelf where I can record myself
12:52
film myself and make it make some good
12:56
episodes for the videos as well I know
12:58
everybody's liking the videos being back
13:00
at the moment which is fantastic and I'm
13:02
happy about so hopefully we're going to
13:05
keep this up this weekend's going to be
13:07
busy as well recording all these
13:09
podcasts for the week ahead I like to
13:11
film them all on Saturday and Sunday so
13:13
that you've got them for the
13:15
week as obviously when I finished work
13:18
I'm tired so I'm not necessarily wanting
13:20
to record them but you will get a single
13:23
an episode every single day this week
13:25
believe me and thank you for everybody
13:28
that's comment commented saying I'm glad
13:30
the podcast's back and thank you to
13:32
everybody that's listening to them over
13:34
a 100 people each episode are listening
13:36
to them and so yeah keep sharing it out
13:39
everybody the more people that listen
13:41
the better they will get out to
13:43
everybody so until tomorrow's episode
13:46
tomorrow's episode we will be talking
13:48
about everything that we've got up to on
13:50
Sunday so make sure you tune in for that
