0:23
tricks and techniques to make your
0:25
garden and alotment thve from planting
0:28
sewing and growing we will share all the
0:31
tips and AD advice we will also have
0:34
regular episodes talking about what we
0:36
have been up to on the alarm so sit back
0:40
grab a brew and enjoy today's
0:44
episode hey everyone and welcome back to
0:48
gardening with Ben for another brand new
0:52
episode well it's currently the weekend
0:55
it's Sunday
0:56
morning and we have been down to the
0:59
allotment yesterday today did I do any
1:01
work yes I did I did absolutely loads
1:05
down there I could just hear the ice
1:07
cream van in the
1:08
background it's bit cold for ice cream
1:11
but we have been so busy down there at
1:14
the alotment today it was an absolute
1:16
gorgeous day today cold very cold but it
1:20
was sunny day and we got absolutely
1:24
loads of stuff done down there so what
1:28
did we get done today well we fed Mrs
1:32
pussycat she at the allotment waiting
1:34
for me as soon as I got there so I went
1:37
and fed her she's looking well looking
1:40
healthy and yeah she Pops to see me
1:43
every time we go down to the
1:46
allotment and then we fed the birds we
1:49
filled the bird feeders up that is we've
1:52
done the main things feeding all the
1:54
wildlife down there it costs a fortune
1:56
looking after all the
1:58
wildlife but with them all and they will
2:01
be happy that there's some food around
2:03
because it was Frosty this morning it
2:06
was icy so the birds will be struggling
2:08
to get the bird the worms out of the
2:11
ground so hopefully we can keep them
2:14
coming down to the alotment eating all
2:17
the insects and eating all the bird seed
2:19
as well so we did that and then one of
2:23
my main jobs what I wanted to get done
2:25
today was sort out around my strawberry
2:27
beds my strawberry beds are the pride
2:30
and joy of my allotment if I could have
2:32
strawberries all over my plot I
2:34
certainly would do that is one thing
2:36
that I would get done so we've been
2:39
tidying up around all the paths sorting
2:42
out some of the old Planters what we're
2:44
around clearing all that sweeping all
2:46
the paths down we can actually get round
2:48
the strawberry beds now which is a lot
2:51
better we don't have to clamber over any
2:54
pots
2:55
and um plant pots and anything like that
2:59
we've got it all tidy so that is one job
3:02
done and I've also been Tiding back well
3:05
tying back my blackbery canes because
3:09
they've grown absolutely wild this year
3:12
all over the place and yeah I grow them
3:14
down the side of my plot which is
3:16
perfect they can Trail along my fence
3:18
and everything like that but I have to
3:19
tie them back to the fence because their
3:22
little Runners shoot out everywhere so
3:24
we've been tying all them back and
3:26
sorting them all out and making sure
3:27
that they on M at a plot because I
3:30
always said to my neighbor if they're on
3:31
your side help yourself to them but yeah
3:34
I'm tiing them to my to my side of the
3:36
plot and making sure that they grow
3:38
Massad CU they're absolutely gorgeous
3:40
they're for forless blackberries but
3:42
they get absolutely loads of
3:44
blackberries on them and they're massive
3:45
they're a lot bigger than the standard
3:47
Blackberry so I'm really happy with this
3:50
formless variety that I've purchased and
3:53
the varieties is that I purchased I
3:54
think they were from Morrison's Garden
3:56
Center that I originally bought these
3:58
from and they're doing absolutely
4:01
fantastic so we've got all them growing
4:03
down the side of the plot and they do
4:05
brilliant and obviously we're being
4:07
trimming back any old Blackberry canes
4:09
off them uh where the signs of old
4:12
blackberri is what we on them from like
4:14
the little uh shoots what coming off
4:16
them we've snipped all them back tided
4:18
them all up and they're all look looking
4:20
pretty
4:22
good we've also been doing a bit of
4:24
tidying up we've always got tidying up
4:27
down to down at the alotment to do um
4:30
I'm a messy Gardener I've always
4:32
admitted that but yeah we've been
4:34
tidying up and clearing away and one
4:39
thing I've not had to do today I've not
4:40
had to do any weeding because I've
4:42
weeded all my beds now they all are
4:44
pretty empty and they're all just sat
4:47
there waiting to be planted ready for
4:49
next year and hopefully we're going to
4:52
get a lot of stuff
4:54
growing and if you listened to
4:56
yesterday's podcast I were talking about
4:59
all the poppy seeds that I've got grow
5:01
uh what I purchased what I'm going to
5:03
try for next year I'm also going to try
5:06
different varieties of
5:08
geraniums and I'm also going to try
5:10
different varieties of sweet peas
5:13
possibly and possibly sunflowers as well
5:17
so hopefully we're going to attract lots
5:18
and lots of bees to the alotment and
5:20
hopefully a lot of fragrance as well
5:22
because the sweet peas will smell
5:25
absolutely amazing we've obviously got
5:27
some sweet peas growing we've heard all
5:30
them last year uh well this year around
5:34
October time and they're still alive in
5:36
the shed I had a check on them today
5:38
they're looking healthy they're still
5:40
alive the Cold's not killed them because
5:42
like I say my Greenhouse is isn't heated
5:45
so I'm fingers Crossing that they stay
5:49
alive ready for next year we've started
5:51
them off early because they say that it
5:53
makes them stronger and we've trimmed
5:56
them back so that they Bush out the
5:58
flowers might not possibly as be as big
6:00
but they'll get more flowers on them so
6:03
hopefully this works as I've not grown
6:06
them from this time of the year before
6:08
usually I plant them around March April
6:10
time and sometimes this struggle when
6:12
you plant them out uh they're not hard
6:15
hardened off enough and they seem
6:18
struggling a lot die and stuff like that
6:20
so I'm starting them off now ready for
6:22
next year to hopefully have a successful
6:25
Sweet Pea
6:26
Harvest and if all these sweet peas grw
6:30
it's going to look absolutely phenomenal
6:32
on my alotment I've got absolutely LS in
6:34
my shed growing my geraniums are still
6:36
alive in the shed as well they're doing
6:38
well we dug all them up out of the
6:40
ground and we put them in the greenhouse
6:42
to keep them alive in the greenhouse
6:43
over the winter because that's what you
6:45
can do if you've got geranium dig them
6:47
up move them into a greenhouse move them
6:49
out of the cold and you may be able to
6:52
keep them alive throughout winter and
6:53
then plant them out again next spring
6:56
time once the frost is gone cuz if you
6:58
leave them out
7:00
the frost will kill them and yeah you'll
7:03
have to buy new ones next year so we're
7:05
just trying to save a bit of money and
7:06
keep them keep them
7:09
alive but like I said I'm hopefully
7:11
going to grow some geraniums myself next
7:14
year I've grown them from seed before
7:16
and they did absolutely fantastic we had
7:18
amazing results from them first time I
7:21
ever grew them and we managed to grow
7:23
some from seed and they took a bit
7:25
longer to get to flowering stage but
7:28
they did flow eventually and they looked
7:30
absolutely amazing so if you want to
7:32
save some money try growing some
7:33
drainings from seed yourself next year
7:37
obviously if you start them off early if
7:38
you've got a warm Greenhouse you will
7:40
get flowers on them pretty earlier than
7:44
like I did towards middle end of summer
7:47
so hopefully we'll have lots of flowers
7:49
next year but yeah I'm just getting
7:51
excited now for stuff to grow and I may
7:55
look at growing some different FS to
7:57
cucumbers as well we have such a good
8:00
success of growing a cucumbers Outdoors
8:04
last year my market more variety I
8:06
planted a Mt outside I got loads of
8:08
spare plants and I thought I'm not
8:10
wasting money
8:11
on spending it on uh loads of compost
8:16
put them in pots in my poly tunnel where
8:18
they'll just dry out and die I'll just
8:20
plant them outside and see how they go
8:22
and to say it wasn't a very nice summer
8:24
they did absolutely amazing it must have
8:26
been a perfect season for them because
8:29
we got absolutely loads of them so I
8:32
might look at different varieties to
8:34
grow next year there's like a lemon
8:36
variety and an apple variety as well so
8:38
I might look at trying to grow them
8:40
seeing how we get on with them but yeah
8:43
I'm hoping for a great big Harvest next
8:46
year like I said I'm working 9 to5
8:48
Monday to Friday now so I don't get
8:50
chance to go down in the week like I
8:52
used to I used to work four on four off
8:54
so I used to spend four days down at the
8:57
allotment at a time so hope hopefully we
9:00
can still get a good harvest on two days
9:03
a week like I don't live too far away
9:06
from a plot so in the summer mons I will
9:08
pop down at night down to the alotment
9:10
just to check on it give it a water and
9:13
see how it is so hopefully I'm I'm
9:17
thinking that we're going to do well
9:18
next year we've got a good start on it
9:21
all my plots cleared it's all tiay we're
9:24
going to now start working on inside our
9:27
shed pretty soon getting all that ready
9:29
ready for next year and yeah I've got a
9:33
lot of faith in how well we're going to
9:34
do next year and I hope you do too and
9:39
like I always say start off early get
9:41
your garden ready get your allotment
9:43
ready for the season ahead like I could
9:45
just sit back now and relax
9:48
until March time because I don't need to
9:51
particularly do much down there but I'm
9:53
finding little jobs to do and getting it
9:56
all ready cuz I cracked on after after
9:59
the season and I cleared it all I got it
10:01
all tided I dug up all the old plants
10:04
cleared them all
10:05
away and got it all already so I don't
10:09
have to do anything throughout the
10:10
winter period if I don't want to but I'm
10:12
going to keep on going down because I
10:14
need to keep creating content for all
10:16
you guys and I need something to talk
10:18
about while I'm down at the
10:20
alotment so yeah I hope that you all
10:24
enjoying these podcasts they have been
10:26
coming on every single day and if you
10:29
got any friends that like gardening or a
10:31
lotman in make sure you share them the
10:33
link to my podcast because we're getting
10:35
more and more people listen every single
10:37
day um I want it to be really successful
10:40
next year I want it to really take off
10:42
like we're getting over a hundred people
10:44
listen every single day at the moment
10:46
which is phenomenal for person that's
10:49
not a professional Gardener I just talk
10:51
about my what I'm getting up between my
10:52
garden and sharing my tips and advice
10:54
with you
10:55
all and I think that's absolutely
10:57
brilliant but we see if we can get 200
11:00
people listening a day that' be
11:02
phenomenal and yeah everything I made
11:05
from these podcasts goes back towards my
11:07
allotment and you know how much seeds
11:09
cost some cost quite a bit of money so
11:12
it all goes towards seeds and compost
11:14
and keeping you all entertained and
11:17
enjoying this
