how to turn failures into success
0:03
stories welcome to Gardening with Ben
0:06
and today we're going to be talking
0:07
about how we turn our failures down at
0:09
the a lotment into success stories and
0:12
we certainly have lots of failures i'm
0:14
always failing down at the aotment and
0:17
failing at things you learn from it and
0:21
you improve from your failures and some
0:24
of the failures that I have down here at
0:26
the aotment has to be watering now I
0:30
love planting i love growing but I just
0:33
hate watering and obviously without
0:35
watering you won't get great produce
0:38
down at the a lotment you won't get
0:39
great crops and if it's like it is at
0:42
the moment we've not had rain for 21
0:44
days down here where I am so everything
0:47
is pretty dry so if I didn't water
0:50
everything would certainly die off down
0:53
here at the a lotment
0:55
so you learn from not watering because
1:01
busy looking after things keeping it
1:03
alive and keeping it growing so the I've
1:07
learned from not watering because things
1:08
just die off and you need to keep things
1:11
watered on a regular basis even if it's
1:13
every couple of days the soil where I am
1:16
keeps pretty damp and keeps pretty moist
1:19
underneath it's usually dry on top but
1:20
when you dig down it's pretty damp so I
1:23
only water every couple of days down
1:25
here now at the moment and we get great
1:27
produce from it another failure has to
1:29
be is not putting seed labels in my
1:32
plants i've done this many of times for
1:36
I'll know what it is when it's growing
1:37
and then when it's growing you totally
1:39
forget what it is certain plants you can
1:41
tell what they are like sweet corn or
1:44
peas or beetroot or even carrots you can
1:48
always tell what they are but certain
1:50
things you can't tell what they are
1:52
until they've actually grown a bit like
1:54
squash corettes pumpkins they all look
1:58
the same goes for brassacas like
2:00
cauliflower cabbage broccoli they all
2:03
look alike so you don't know what they
2:04
are until they actually grow so I've
2:06
definitely learned from not labeling up
2:08
because you need to know what you're
2:10
planting and need to know how much space
2:12
you need to leave between them all so
2:14
make sure you get some labels and make
2:16
sure you write everything
2:19
down but there's so many failures like
2:21
some years vegetables will do really
2:23
well they'll grow really well and you'll
2:25
have a fantastic crop you'll do the same
2:28
process the year after and there's a
2:30
total failure and sometimes you can't
2:33
explain it sometimes it's down to the
2:35
weather last year it was an awful summer
2:38
it were cold it were raining all the
2:40
time and things didn't grow well
2:41
whatsoever and some years like this year
2:46
so each year is a different year so
2:49
never get disheartened with failures
2:52
down at the aotment or it will put you
2:55
off gardening is about having fun and if
2:58
you get produce yes bonus fantastic
3:00
you've got a great crop and you can eat
3:03
the produce what you have grown but if
3:05
you get failures you just try again the
3:07
year after start from scratch every year
3:09
and enjoy it and reap the rewards from
3:12
it so there's plenty of failures out
3:15
there and I have failures with spacing
3:18
or I plant loads of seeds and then I
3:22
don't end up watering them and they all
3:23
die off or another failure that I have
3:26
is I plant too many seeds i get a seed
3:29
packet i sprinkle all the seeds out i
3:32
don't save any of them uh I sprinkle
3:34
them all out cuz they're that cheap some
3:36
seeds uh I think it's pointless just
3:39
wrapping them back up until the year
3:40
after so I end up planting all the seeds
3:42
and I have too many plants but the
3:45
success from that is I give loads of
3:46
plants away as well so I give them to
3:49
other people down here at the a lotment
3:50
and they can enjoy the rewards of what
3:53
I've started for them and they can see
3:55
the success in them so from failures you
3:58
can have success stories as well from
4:00
them and every day is a success being
4:04
down at the a lotment because going to
4:05
the a lotment is good for the mental
4:07
health it's good for being down here
4:10
it's good for relaxing it's good for
4:13
everything really it's good for exercise
4:15
so every day is a success if you manage
4:18
to get to your a lotment and garden and
4:21
like I said if you get vegetables or
4:23
fruit from it that is a bonus and some
4:26
things grow really really well and they
4:28
don't need no help whatsoever like
4:31
rhubarb rhubarb does really well lettuce
4:33
seems to do really well runner beans
4:35
peas there's so many great vegetables
4:38
out there that you can have great
4:39
success from with little effort put into
4:42
looking after and keeping them alive so
4:44
we'll talk about that in another episode
4:46
what the best things are to grow to get
4:48
great success from so until next time
4:51
everyone remember keep smiling keep
4:54
shining and keep gardening with Ben
4:56
everyone until next time we'll see you
