hey everyone and welcome back to
0:03
gardening with Ben well it's absolutely
0:06
freezing today but we're down here on
0:08
the alotment and we're going to give you
0:10
our weekly tour of what we've got up to
0:13
down here at the alotment show you
0:14
what's growing what's not growing and
0:17
have a tour around so sit back relax and
0:20
enjoy today's episode
0:23
[Music]
0:41
so yeah we're back down at the allotment
0:43
today it's absolutely freezing but we
0:47
have got lots of stuff done this weekend
0:50
down here it was gorgeous day yesterday
0:53
but the temperature has dropped today
0:55
and there's forecast of snow coming up
0:58
so fingers crossed we don't get the snow
1:00
but we need the cold weather to help
1:02
with the garlic because the cold weather
1:04
helps the formation of the garlic clove
1:07
ready for growing next year so we do
1:10
need the cold weather and it will wake
1:12
up all the spring bulbs and get them gr
1:14
as well so let's have a tour around and
1:17
let's have a look at our
1:19
alotment so we always start off at the
1:21
front of the plot the fuches are still
1:24
buding
1:25
up man you this cold snap we'll probably
1:29
send them off to sleep
1:30
ready for the winter but yeah we'll keep
1:33
it out on then and we've got a bit more
1:35
color on his heav this week we just need
1:38
it all to start coming out and then
1:41
it'll look absolutely gorgeous I only
1:43
bought these for 50 P from being Q ages
1:46
ago they were selling them all off at
1:47
end of year and I bought quite a few of
1:50
them poted them in and they've done
1:52
absolutely
1:56
fantastic yeah look at these fuches down
1:59
here
2:02
absolutely loads of flowers on them they
2:04
should be going to sleep
2:06
now but they're still flowering really
2:10
nicely look at all these spring bulbs
2:12
popping up
2:13
everywhere Fantastic Mr squirrel's been
2:17
getting some of them hopefully they'll
2:19
leave some
2:21
in but yeah it's all looking decent at
2:25
the front hopefully we'll get lots of
2:26
tulips and everything coming up at the
2:29
front of pl we planted loads of bulbs in
2:32
this front
2:35
but still got roses on as well look at
2:38
them absolutely
2:41
gorgeous these are my climbing verses
2:43
these ones but yeah we've got plenty of
2:46
buds as well on them but again like I
2:48
said this cold snap probably will send
2:50
them off to sleep now we've put our bird
2:54
houses back up they're being cleaned out
2:56
ready for next year hopefully we get
2:58
some birdies in them some blue tis
3:01
that's what we
3:04
want but yeah we've got loads of spring
3:06
bulbs popping up down the side of the
3:09
plot which will hopefully be good we got
3:12
bird feeders
3:14
up Mr squirrel keeps getting
3:17
there
3:20
but we've got to look after the wild
3:23
life we got us fat balls
3:26
up but yeah this weekend I have been t
3:29
in up around that rubab area now this I
3:33
couldn't even get down here the other
3:35
day because it was full of Bram balls so
3:39
were just Bram balls growing all down
3:41
this side all over the place but we've
3:43
cleared out all the Bram bols now so we
3:46
can get down here we need to clean his
3:48
pond out that's one job that we need to
3:50
do all them leaves falling in it but
3:52
we'll clean them out once all leaves
3:53
have dropped get it ready for next year
3:57
but yeah got lots of rubab
3:59
but again the co snap will kill it off
4:02
and send it back to sleep ready for
4:06
winter but yeah this is all wood chip
4:09
this area so keeps it warm keeps it
4:13
mulched and hopefully stops the weeds
4:16
but there's black membrane underneath
4:17
all this anyway to stop the weeds from
4:19
growing they only pop up through where
4:21
the holes are
4:23
Etc but yeah I'm happy with this area I
4:26
don't think I'm going to be pruning much
4:28
off my fruit trees this year
4:30
they're not too bad we might leave them
4:33
for this year and do them next
4:38
year this area is looking very bare now
4:41
now that it's all dying off the fuches
4:43
seem to be dying back off at this side
4:45
it's bizarre how they're not dying off
4:47
at the front but they're dying off here
4:49
but yeah hopefully this is going to be
4:52
full of spring bulbs and full of color
4:54
lots of color in there look at the
4:57
redness of my loganberry leaves
5:00
absolutely
5:01
gorgeous they look
5:04
brilliant hopefully we get lots of Logan
5:06
berries on them next
5:10
year we've started the mass clean up
5:12
inside the shed started raining
5:14
yesterday while down here so I've
5:15
started sweeping up and tidying up but
5:18
yeah it's looking a lot better we've got
5:21
us water stored ready for when we turn
5:23
the water off on site and yeah I'll need
5:26
that for all my seeds next year so we'll
5:29
be saving that
5:31
yeah we've got a sweet peas these are
5:33
the ones that we trimmed back last week
5:36
we're doing all right the geraniums are
5:38
dying off we're going to have to keep
5:39
them watered we need to keep them
5:42
watered throughout the winter
5:44
period obviously like I say it's not
5:46
heated in here so fingers crossed we can
5:49
keep them but if not they die we'll have
5:52
to get some more but hopefully we can
5:54
save them and keep them growing all year
5:58
round but yeah
6:01
down here we've got loopings growing
6:04
look at them they're doing
6:07
well I've grown them from
6:11
seed got some more sweet
6:15
peas and these are Salvia that we potted
6:17
up last week they're pretty damp still
6:22
but yeah hopefully they take Route and
6:24
we get loads of salv growing next
6:27
year that's the plan
6:30
help the bees
6:33
out back outside we've got bird feeders
6:36
up uh but that se block it keeps on
6:40
getting eaten fast so whether the
6:42
scribbl are eating the SE block but
6:43
they're not getting to the seeds or the
6:45
pets so that's good so at least the
6:47
birds are getting them but yeah next
6:49
weekend is going to be sorting out all
6:52
this area which will be a job in in
6:55
itself but yeah we're going to I've
6:58
started all my strawberries AR my
7:00
strawberries are fine uh we've got all
7:01
them planted but we need to clear all
7:03
down this Edge sort out the Blackberry
7:06
uh came what's gr over there we're going
7:08
to put that back up against the fence
7:10
and just tidy the paths up so that we
7:12
can get round them
7:13
easily and tidy all the rubbish away and
7:16
all the old weeds and everything like
7:18
that give it a sweep up clean up but
7:21
yeah the great Vine's losing its leaves
7:23
now but look at this color absolutely
7:27
gorgeous absolutely beautiful
7:32
but yeah we need to sort the M out sort
7:33
out all the rubbish down the side get it
7:37
all tided get the old leaves swept away
7:41
and
7:42
composted but yeah we've got plenty to
7:44
keep us doing we've got all bulbs down
7:45
here you can see some popping
7:48
through a lot of these are aliums I
7:51
believe but yeah hopefully we get a lot
7:53
of spring color down this side
8:03
these ones are starting to die off just
8:05
remember to keep deheading
8:07
them when they die
8:10
off that's all you need to do just keep
8:12
deheading them we still got us beat loot
8:14
to
8:16
harvest those onions still aren't
8:18
growing much yet we got a couple growing
8:22
with shoots on but not loads those red
8:25
onions aren't starting to grow yet we're
8:27
going to give them more water today get
8:29
them water Ed and hopefully give them
8:31
that kickart to get started now there's
8:34
garlic on the other hand look at this
8:37
this is my garlic doing really really
8:40
well the back lot are a bit slow but the
8:44
front lot are doing absolutely fantastic
8:46
look at them doing so
8:50
good yeah hopefully we'll have a lot of
8:52
garlic next year we cleared all around
8:55
that area as well that's obviously where
8:57
I've cleared all the brols but yeah it's
8:59
looking a lot more tidier but all the
9:02
beds are
9:03
cleared ready for next year just keep
9:06
need to keep them H keep them Weed Free
9:09
ready for next year's
9:11
growing but yeah I'm happy with how much
9:13
we've got done we certainly got loads
9:16
done down here that was all the old
9:18
compost from my potato boxes but
9:22
obviously it'll be good for the soil so
9:24
we'll dig all that in as
9:26
well so yeah that is a tour of my
9:28
allotment and as you can see we've got
9:30
absolutely loads done and the reason why
9:32
we pushed on getting it all tided and
9:34
all cleared because you don't know what
9:36
the weather's going to be like during
9:37
the winter months like they say it's
9:39
going to be forecast cold weather this
9:41
week possibly snow so I might not be
9:44
down next weekend so now that I've got
9:46
it all completely cleared I don't have
9:48
to worry about that it's just case
9:50
tidying up and doing any work down here
9:52
that needs doing but all my beds are
9:54
cleared ready for next year now so
9:55
that's one job done out of everything so
9:59
then I can concentrate on doing any
10:01
repairs and any tidying up and any
10:04
rubbish removal and stuff like that at
10:07
least I've got the main jobs done now
10:09
and yeah I'm happy that I've managed to
10:11
complete it all we're in like a month or
10:14
two um if anything I could sit back and
10:18
relax but I'm not going
10:19
to I'm going to keep on coming down here
10:22
keep on creating these videos and
10:24
sharing what I'm getting up to down here
10:26
